Thanks Maggies Army for that memory. I remember the Poll Tax all too well - students who shared an apartment (with nobody working part-time jobs) would be exempt from the Poll Tax. A student who stayed at home with working parents would be required to pay the Poll Tax but at a reduced rate. A large family with everyone on minimum wage jobs living in a small house would end up paying considerably far more than a company CEO living alone in a large mansion.

The Poll Tax was killed off in the end, by the inability to track a constantly moving student population - there are something like 1 million+ students constantly changing accommodation every three months (if not more frequently during the first term). Then in somewhere corporate like London, rents are priced on a weekly basis - people move around that quickly - temp's, secretaries, PA's, shorthand writers, typists, all move around as their jobs change.

The ID Card scheme plans to charge people 80 pounds every time they change address. It will either have to be made simple enough to update online with term-time and home addresses (as with students), otherwise it will just become out of date very rapidly.

They can stick their Id cards up their ####!!!! I like the microwave idea!! But if you must have an Id card to get a passport, then take their Id card, get your passport, then lose the Id card. Report it missing or stolen, then they will issue a new one!! Then report it stolen or missing, then they will issue a new one!! then report it stolen or missing.............on and on and on!!!! If everyone does this permanently, the shamefull disgracefull issuing office will grind to a halt!!! 322 WE KNOW ABOUT YOU!!!

The people of the U.K. successfully overturned the poll tax (Community Charge) by way of civil disobedience by simply refusing to pay. My wages were arrested and it cost me an aditional 10% penalty. Such did not affect my credit rating as non-payment was widespread and considered political. By the time they collected it, I probably would have earned the 10% surcharge had I banked the charge as savings anyway.

For those not in the know this was a blanket property tax: Whether you lived in an apartment or a mansion you were expected to pay the same. A tax clearly aimed at benefiting the rich.

This is far more important. Remember the U.K. government's anti drugs campaign slogan?

It's time to use it again: "JUST SAY NO!"

As for being able to trust the government with such information it's simple. They can't be, having lost the entire Child Benefit database, which was but one of many failures by them to protect our personal data.

I got my Old style Passport renewed couple yrs back. Even US must recognise it despite not being Machine Readable or Bio-metric passport. So, does that mean I won't be automatically issued with an ID card for .... let's see ... another 8 years?
