Some investors in 401(k) retirement funds who are moving to grab their money are finding they can’t.
Even with recent gains in stocks such as Monday’s, the months of market turmoil have delivered a blow to some 401(k) participants: freezing their investments in certain plans. In some cases, individual investors can’t withdraw money from certain retirement-plan options. In other cases, employers are having trouble getting rid of risky investments in 401(k) plans.
When Ed Dursky was laid off from his job at a manufacturing company in March, he couldn’t withdraw $40,000 from his 401(k) retirement account invested in the Principal U.S. Property Separate Account.
That fund, which invests directly in office buildings and other properties, had stopped allowing most investors to make withdrawals last fall as many of its holdings became hard to sell.
Now Mr. Dursky, of Ottumwa, Iowa, is looking for work and losing patience. All he wants, he said, is his money.
“I hate to be whiny, but it is my money,” Mr. Dursky said.
The withdrawal restrictions are limiting investment options for plan participants and employers at a key time in the markets. The timing is inconvenient for the number of workers like Mr. Dursky who are laid off and find their savings inaccessible.

People were supposed to trust the stock market and the government, and leave their money in, to watch it disappear ala the Bildeberger’s dreams of global depression. Now people are pulling out their 401K and buying gold, silver, ammo, guns and food…making gardens, etc. That is NOT in the plan, so anyway to force you to keep your money in their system, works for them. They thought huge taxes would be enough to keep most people vested in, but it seems more people than they thought can do math.

I sit at my desk and my phone doesn’t ring, nobody phones I wonder could we be in a recession or something? In my 12 step program, those who are “inside” like in treatment centers and so on, they have money yet don’t work, I work and try to but haven’t any money. Some guys are going to school like studying to be “Human Resource Personell” at the age of 60 plus, they have money, the teachers seem to have money. I am taxed to pay for this reeducation of bubious value. I just read Mikey G’s post and was moved to write I feel about the same sort of numb and totally powerless. I think the system is engaged in busy work retraining people for non existant jobs. I just wish I had something to do after I finish my coffee. I used to work almost round the clock. Mike M
