It’s not often that meteorology intersects with geopolitics – but Europe could be in store for another Cold War, literally.
Accuweather.com’s chief long-range and hurricane forecaster Joe Bastardi observed that Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s recent cut of gas flows to Europe via Ukraine may have been done so in anticipation of a global cooling cycle on the Jan. 6 “Glenn Beck Show” radio program. Bastardi has a solid reputation among Wall Street traders for understanding weather’s impact on energy commodities.
“The thing I want to bring up here – very interesting – most of the solar cycle studies that we know about and that guys like me read have come out of the Russian scientists,” Bastardi said. “But when Glasnost developed, the Russian scientists, a lot of their ideas on the coming cool period that a lot of us believe is going to occur – ice, rather than fire is the big problem down the road here 2030, 2040, and the reversing cyclical cycles of the ocean – it came out of the East.”
According to Bastardi – Putin is relying on the data from the Russian scientists and wants to bring some European nations to their knees by exploiting their reliance on natural gas when the weather is at its coldest.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
“Now my theory – something that I put out and it’s something that’s not something that people want to hear is that Putin knows what is going to happen – or he believes the same way I do about the overall climate pattern. So, if you control the pipeline into Europe, you literally can control Europe without firing a shot – if you control the energy.”
Bastardi cited former President Ronald Reagan’s 1982 Cold War-era staunch resistance to a then-$10 billion pipeline that was proposed to deliver natural gas 3,500 miles from Siberia to the heart of Western Europe, as a July 12, 1982 Time magazine article pointed out. Reagan’s stance was criticized by Western Europe Cold War allies and was said to be “riding roughshod over Western Europe’s economies,” by Time.
Bastardi also noted Russia’s invasion of Georgia in August 2008 was evidence of Putin’s willingness to use energy as a strategic tactic, since the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, located in Georgia, transports about a million barrels of oil a day from the Caspian Sea through Georgia to ports in Turkey – and then throughout Europe.
“That is why Reagan was so dead set against the Europeans looking east for their energy,” Bastardi said. “And now we’re seeing it. I believe the invasion of Georgia was nothing more than saying, ‘Hey I can take that pipeline whenever I want’ and he shut the gas off to the Ukraine when it got brutally cold.”
In a follow-up interview with the Business & Media Institute, Bastardi explained that a lot of Putin’s personality traits are at play here – that he is using intelligence, going back to his days as at the KGB.
“The weather’s most certainly involved in this,” Bastardi said. “If look at what those Russian scientists, where a lot of these studies on it getting cold come from – you can see that, what makes you think that Putin doesn’t have some knowledge of that? Here’s the head of the KGB – and forever what you want to say, I’m sure he’s privy to the same kind of information the head of the CIA is privy to here about studies and what people are thinking on a scientific nature.”
And according to Bastardi, Putin’s use of the flow of energy into Europe is just one of the weapons in his arsenal of tactics that he, as the head of Russia, has perfected using – comparing him to a wrestler with a perfected move.
“He’s definitely a type-A alpha male and we can both agree on that,” Bastardi said. “I mean look at him and he is more likely to use weapons – and I use weapons in terms of for instance a wrestler – a single-leg take down is a weapon. If you perfect it, you can use it the entire match. He’s more likely in the art of war to use what he knows how to use, even if it’s only two or three things than try to go use something he doesn’t know how to use or try to create something – that’s a waste of time to use it.”
It’s not a personality fault Bastardi contended on Beck’s program – but just what he considers proper for his country.
“And so, there are a couple of things that line up here that indicate the guy is trying act on behalf of his country and what he believes his country should be,” Bastardi said. “And I believe that he wants to use nature, rather than change nature and that may be what’s going on over here.”

Never underestimate Mr. Putin.
Everyone in the Oligarchy of Russia have been put there by Mr. Putin even the current prime.
If they do something to upset him, they are easily disposed off.
Just look at that fellow that got poisoned with nuclear materials in Brittain.
Look at Abramovic who have put huge quantities of money into becoming a public figure to secure his own survival.
Scary fellow but I’d rather be ruled by him than “Laurel and Hardy” (Bush and Cheney).

Come on now, the propagandists are hard at work again. Russia hasn’t cut the gas off to Europe they rely on it for revenue. Ukraine has cut the gas off by stopping the pumping stations on Ukraine soil and stealing the gas. They have refused to let impartial observers from Switzerland into the country and large amounts of Europe bound gas is “disappearing” on Ukrainian soil.
Ukraine is a delinquent customer who has failed to pay for it’s own gas usage (more than 2 billion Dollars) and it’s CIA installed government is illegally stopping the flow of gas through it’s transit pipeline (These are completely different pipelines from the Ukrainian domestic consumption pipelines which Russia HAS stopped supplying because the Ukrainian government refuses to pay for it’s own gas).
Guess what, If you continually refuse to pay your energy bill at some point your supplier is going to cut of your supply. What Ukraine is doing is stealing it’s nieghbours supply to make up for lost supply and then trying to blame the supplier.
Do you really believe that Exxon mobil or any other energy supplier would keep supplying a non-paying customer indefinitely? Would it be accurate to describe the discontinuation of supply as political? The weather has nothing to do with it but a new year has. The bills from 2008 have to be settled for 2009 Ukrainian domestic supply to continue. The Ukrainian government know this and knew their domestic supply would stop at this point .
Ukraine is attempting to black mail western Europe and blame Russia for it own criminal actions. If Western Europe is worried about it’s gas supply then they could take away the prospect of Ukraine ever joining the EU. Until it pays for it’s energy the same as everyone else and stop stealing European bound transit gas.
The lying Bastardi (or should that be just Bastard) is just trying to turn facts on their head.
PS: The clumsy MI5 attempt to frame the Russians for the polieum 210 poisoning has long ago being debunked. I’m not trying to say the Russian are the good guys, but would like to point out that this just another propaganda attack against Russia. that fall to pieces when you check the facts. The same mainstream media sources who are lying about Russia today have already proved they are lairs in the August Georgian conflict. Then they claimed that Russia had attacked Georgia first when the opposite has been proven to be true.
I don’t understand how anyone can take sources from an outlet that are known and proven liars seriously.

This article is utter crap.
Russia WANTS to sell its oil.
Georgia INVADED RUSSIA, NOT the other way around. What are we GOLDFISH? 8 second memories?
The world bankers DON’T HAVE RUSSIA YET. They WANT RUSSIA.
Russia needs MONEY, not oil. They are in no position to play bullshit games. The people who control the money supply (the fascist elite oligarchy) are ALWAYS in a position to play bullshit games.
Cheney visited the Ukraine not long ago. I wonder what they talked about at that meeting? Hmm…
PERHAPS, RAISING CONTRACT PRICES TO ABSURD LEVELS IN ORDER TO CUT OFF A HUGE WINDFALL OF INCOME FROM RUSSIA (who Georgia invaded).
Russia is not “super-wonder-great-happy-land”, but that doesn’t mean we should replace them with fascist pig central bankers, who want to expand their empire, under the moniker of “spreading freedom”.
“Let the freedom eagle soar” sounds a whole lot better then “We want a world empire of central banks that control the money supply and we’ll sell our own mother’s souls to make it happen.”

agreed danny cunnington, there has never been any reason for putin to assert his authority over western europe, they have been loyal trading partners for decades not only with energy supplies, but trade in all forms. some regions where western europe holds more sway, others like energy where russia holds more sway, but neither have been dumb enough to try to blackmail or bully each other to upset their ever standing relations. The problem comes in with ukraine and georgias rediculious ideology that they are going to control relations and dictate terms with russia, because now the USA has their backs. Hence the trouble in the region of late. Western europe knows exactly what is going on here. The US is diplomatically trying to attack russia, by turning there neighbours against them, and giving them cache blanche to do whatever little shananagans they please. Western europe knows this, and is completly against the US creating trouble in their region to suit their own agenda, hence completly dissmissing the US push to get ukraine and georgia into NATO, and responsible for the recent souring in relations between the 2 regions. Russia offered to supply gas too and through ukraine for half the price they give any other consumer if ukraine agreed to pay off outstanding debts, ukraine disagreed and dragged their feet on the debt. this happened on the next 3 meetings between the 2 neighbours before russia said enough is enough. After russia cut off gas to ukraine, they began to siphon gas from the lines going through ukraine, with western european countries reporting massive drops in their supplies. with observers from nations reporting that the gas was being delivered from russia, and observers from nations reporting drops of up to 40% from countries who recieve gas through ukraines pipelines, putin isnt using gas as a weapon or tool, he is just pissed that ukraines ever dismal leaders are attempting blackmail him and russia of money that is theirs. So cut off gas to europe, and watch as european nations condemn ukraine for attempting to blackmail russia, and going against european policies by attempting to instigate US foriegn policy(anti-russia).
Putin may have a KGB past, but didnt bush senoir have a CIA past? take a look at russia pre and post putin, he has transformed a failing basketcase nation into a returned superpower. Putin may not be perfect, but better one man running russia looking after the national interests of its people, than 100 criminals running russia looking after nothing but themselves(pre putin russia), which is ironically happening in both the ukraine and US as we speak.

This accuweather guy is a lunatic. I don’t understand why everyone needs to touch the Putin button to make a point. I guess it makes for a fun and easy read in western press. However, the real reason behind this mess is Ukraine refuses to pay and sign contract. Gas, unlike oil, is sold on a contractual basis. They have been subsidized and don’t want to pay what everyone in Europe pays. They were offered 250$, but Ukraine wanted 201$. Europe pays over 400$ /1000 cubic meter as a standard. The reason they want to be subsidized is Ukraine’s main source of income is their mining industry and exports of materials like steel. This is in direct competition with Russia. These industries are reliant on gas. Ukraine’s economy is on life support with International Monetary Fund loans. Russia is feeling the economic crunch also as they have budget deficit of around 75$ billion this year. So Russia doesn’t need, nor want this problem.

Danny Cunnington is right, It is the Ukrainian Gov’t that is essentially controled by mega speculator George Soros, the same Soros who funded the colored revolutions in that region, controles the Georgian gov’t and was also part of the invasion of Ossetia, as I believe David Ike came on Alex’s show and said the same thing…
George Soros was also the biggest contributor to the Obama campaign, and the man who launched the campaign itself in David Rockefellers house.

Firstly, well done Alex Jones, you promised your jewish sponsors to eliminate coverage of the jewish-Israeli holocaust in Gaza, as soon as the Israeli-jews had destroyed all the TV and radio stations, murdered all non-jewish controlled journalists, and cut-off all external communications with Gaza. The old ‘no news’ excuse that strangely doesn’t impact ‘whatreallyhappened’ at all. You must be very proud of yourself.
Secondly, the garbage that Blair’s lieutenant, Putin, would stop selling russian oil products (including gas) to the domestic EU market that Blair and Putin so carefully created in the first place. You must really think the people here are prize idiots. Putin is a living example of how you can be absolute ruler of a nation without holding that specific position. Blair, likewise, is absolute ruler of the UK with no current apparent title.
Blair worked with Putin BEFORE putin first took power, during the period when Putin was blowing up apartment blocks in Moscow. Despite being caught red-handed, Putin became the first strongman of post-soviet Russia, and hand in hand with Blair, regrew the military and financial strength of the bear. Putin’s major financial criminals relocated to territory under british control, and the greatest money laundering actions seen by mankind commenced.
The EU domestic fuel market is more than a financial gift to Putin by Blair. It is a geo-political gift too, one which allows the gradual regrowth of the Russian empire without the otherwise expected resistance from the usual quarters. Under this mechanism and others, the Ukraine is to be brought back under overt Russian control.
Blair will sell the loss of influence in central Europe as the need for Obama to move against muslim targets in the Middle East. YES, BLAIR IS PLAYING ONE SIDE AGAINST THE OTHER. How the hell else do you think this game works?

Putin is more of a capitalist than the communist jews that run this country. He kicked the jews out and arrested the oligarchs that bought up russia’s natural resources with rothschilds money. Until we take our country back from the jews that own and run it, I’m going to have to remain a fan of Mr. Putin’s and be happy about his success. He provides a model for bitch slapping the banking empire and walking away from it.

Its more than taxation, its cutting off industrualising nations from building up the infrastructure needed to get out of 3rd world status, and other countries from helping developing nations… taxation sucks, genocide sucks even more.
