Suicides in the US Army are on the rise with 88 suspected cases in the first six months of the year, compared to 67 in the same period in 2008, according to Pentagon figures issued.
The latest figures confirmed warnings from top US military officers that the number of suicides among active-duty soldiers this year was on track to surpass a record level set in 2008.
Last year 128 soldiers took their lives, up from 115 in 2007, amid increasing strain on Army troops serving repeated combat tours.

The 2008 suicide rate among active duty soldiers rose to 20.2 per 100,000, surpassing a demographically adjusted national suicide rate of 19.5 per 100,000 in 2005, the latest year on record.
Of the 88 reported suicides this year, 54 have been confirmed and 34 are pending investigation, the Defense Department said in a statement.
In about 90 percent of previous cases, suspected suicides have been confirmed, officials say.

That is just sad. I wish we hadn’t a standing army. These men and women would be better serving in our State militia where a sense of honor and reward would be most beneficial.

Most of these are kids who decided to enlist because they bought into the rhetoric of serving the nation because it is patriotic and their duty.
Now that they are home some have tremendous guilt. One kid I know actually said he hoped to, “drink himself to death.” Not sure what his parents did to help him, they aren’t exactly the best and most loving people.
I wish more men and women learned that patriotism is being a good person/citizen. Getting married, having kids, and teaching the kids to be good people.
We don’t want you used a cannon fodder! We don’t want you riddled with guilt for following orders you don’t believe in. Just be a family man and build a strong respectable nation of decent people. Stay home and start a family. We need more good men!

GW, would you care to elaborate on your comment, I’m confused. Anyways, this article points out a sad fact. While the military does a great job of training our soldiers for war, they DO NOT do a great job of dealing with our men after they have been under the high stress of war. When I was in the military I always had the feeling I was being used, that’s why I left. But I had great respect for my friends who chose to stay. The average American has no idea about the extreme psychological stresses endured by some of our troops, not all troops see combat. A person I know said it to me this way. In the beginning of the Iraq war for example they were very selective about who they shot at but as time went on they started killling everybody in an area without discrimination. I am not a psychologist but I think the killing of an innocent person would be more haunting than that of an enemy combatant. Another article I read was about a man who kept having nightmares about an Iraqi he had killed. Once he came back to America, every night he saw this man in his dreams yelling and screaming at him from the grave. The “Rough Tough” military image doesn’t tell the whole story about men & women who are real human beings as are the people they are ordered to kill. High stress, coupled with the constant lies from their leaders all the way up to the Commander in Chief about when they will get to go home pushes many people to the brink. I have an oversimplified solution. First, fight a just war that any American citizen can believe in(such as world war 2), second, don’t extend tours of duty. If you tell a soldier one year, stick to one year. Every time you keep adding more and more months, morale hits rock bottom to the point of depression & suicide. Then, when a soldier comes home, I believe the government should allow them to see a shrink of their choice. Non military, a civilian shrink. The reason I say that is how the fuck do you think a soldier will feel spilling his heart out to a government shrink that will share all this information with someone else???We all learned quickly in the military it’s hard to keep your medical life secret. I have to add this comment, please don’t hate me for saying this. I believe if a war requires a draft to keep it going, it’s an illegal war. I will fight for what I believe in , but I will not be forced to fight in anyones war that I disagree with. God bless the families affected by a failure in our military to care for its own.

Soldiers are mecenary murderers. The world needs none of them. It’s not Bush murdering iraqis, it’s the soldiers. It’s not Obama tasering victims of insane economic and social policies, it’s the police. They do it, and the real big criminals keep on laughing at you, me and them. Disobey orders or shoot an innocent is not a hard choice, unless you are a brainwashed moron no longer able to think for himself. Soldiers are criminals.

You misguided thoughts on our troops is based out ignorance at the best. You are probably one of those people that wanted to join but couldn’t because you are either mentally or physically to weak to do it. Either way, your a huge bitch and everyone here can see it.
Our country, citizens and government combined, provide over 74% of the worlds humanitarian aid. Allot of that is delivered and/or protected by US troops. Like when we sent 27,000 US troops into the most Muslim populated country in the world, Indonesia, after the tsunami hit. We probably saved millions from what the effects of malaria from the dead would have done. But since the embedded reporters weren’t there, you probably didn’t see that.
The world needs none of them? Who is gonna protect YOUR fat ass? Just because you have a gun doesn’t mean you know jack shit about how to employ it or would have the balls to when the time arose.
As far as shooting civilians on purpose; Yeah, you can find an occasional Youtube video of US troops or contractors shooting civilians, but that in no way shows what the majority do. We have lost lots of good men because instead of carpet bombing like we did in WW2, we went door to door.
Mercenaries work for anyone’s money, US troops work only for America.

I thought the authorities might have dropped a net on you and hauled you off to the mental institution where you belong. Again you lead off with your fantasies of violence being done to women. poopoo, I agree with much of what you say. During the Vietnam War, as I remember, soldiers only had to serve a years tour of duty and then they were basically home free. Even that was enough to seriously mess with a lot of minds. In the current wars, many of the troops are on their 3rd or 4th tours. They are human beings, not robots. Eventually, the stress will take it’s toll.

Suicides are from PTSD and loosing spouses to divorce or infidelity while deployed, not staged suicides to prevent a soldier from talking about his patrols in Baghdad or Falujah.
You watched too many movies.

This isn’t true. There has always been a wait to get disability benefits set up.

I believe those in the military ARE easily manipulated, but that doesn’t mean you should turn your back on them and hate them. Most are eighteen year-olds fresh out of the propaganda factories we call public schools. They’ve been conned by an evil ideology. We should help them understand, not spit on them. WOW. Some of these responses deserve my pity. Have you not any courage of understanding? I agree with Matt. Obviously humans are easily manipulated when being fed the rubbish of how “great” it is to be in the Military, via Media advertisement. Or the brainwashing that happens in public schools. I propose a separation of education and state!! I mean seriously. Not all of these young men and women who serve our country are ignorant. Some of them DO KNOW what is going on in the world…but they cannot break their contract of “servitude” without harsh repercussions. Contractual employment is definitely not OKAY in my book, but that’s what it is. Ever think for a minute that these people actually have minds but are incapable of acting in other ways aside from their training because of the authority higher-ranking officials have over them? It is Military…a different life. My father is a retired vet. He is the strongest person I know, AND he is the person who has enlightened me into thinking beyond what “society” wants to see. Not all of the military are worthless individuals. If they were druggies they wouldn’t be able to deploy (piss test). They don’t get the care they deserve because our money-hungry gov’t wants to keep it all for themselves…leeches. If you wanna spit on somebody, why don’t you attack the very people who extract your earnings…whether it’s from income, selling, buying, owning, losing, or dying. Don’t fight the people who are just trying to make a way for themselves and others (like you are doing, right?)…especially the military who protects you. shame.

The public schools are based on the Prusian system that trains and prepares the youth to go to war for the state.
Ever wonder why so much history you learn in the public schools focuses on war, and battles, and great leaders who killed many. This is also why we teach “european” history and don’t include other cultures. We want brainwashed white warriors itching to relive the glory of Alexander or Caesar.
It is a system to send our young men to their deaths for the state/empire. They teach the kids who stick it out until graduation to serve in the military. That is why they have military recruiters in the schools. The longer you stay in school the more propaganda you are exposed to.
Little wonder the black and latin american kids drop out. They see through the bull. They are more street wise. They get out before the state can sink their hooks in.

I’m not a psychologist, but i think we all know that suicide happens when a human being is stressed beyond their means to cope. They feel in their mind they have no other way to stop the pain in they are feeling but to end their lives. For a soldier, this pain may be an inability to escape the situation they are in or nightmares in their mind. No matter how tough a military brainwashes you to be we are all deep down merely human and when a warrior culture looks upon someone as weak who can’t cope that person may feel that they have let down their brothers. Thus, essentially taking themselves out of the warrior group. What a victory for evil when men are convinced to destroy an enemy and then themselves. This is a true form of wickedness in man. the reason i left the military is that i no longer believed in what i was doing or being told. I was 22. I’m glad i saw it then, and even more clearly now, that as a modern day US soldier your master is no longer freedom & liberty, but a tyrannical banking regime. I believe our military was noble during ww2 and has declined ever since. I have the greatest respect for our modern day warriors and total disgust for the cowards sending them off to die for oil. We must all help our younger brothers(and sisters) see the truth about who they are really working for. We need a strong military, but with honor.
