After election setback, Sarkozy dumps plans for carbon tax

Paris – Two days after suffering a severe electoral defeat, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has dropped plans to initiate a carbon tax.

Prime Minister Francois Fillon told law-makers from the ruling UMP party Tuesday that the July date for initiating a carbon tax would not be kept.

Fillon said that such a law should be passed throughout Europe, so that French businesses will not suffer from competitive disadvantages.

Sarkozy had made the tax a cornerstone of his environmental policy. It called for taxes on businesses and households according to the carbon dioxide they produce, in the hope of forcing a greater reliance on non-carbon energy.

But the plan was very unpopular with voters and members of Sarkozy’s UMP. Many conservatives charged that the tax was one reason for the party’s severe defeat in Sunday’s regional elections.
