Lufthansa, Europe’s biggest airline group by revenues, has cancelled flights to Tokyo’s main international airport of Narita as Japan’s nuclear crisis deepens.
The German flag carrier, which has already been screening aircraft returning from Japan for radioactivity, said that from Tuesday it would fly to Osaka and Nagoya but stop flying to Narita for what it said were operational reasons.
“We want to secure more stable operations and be in a position to offer sufficient capacity,” a spokesman said.
However, an expert close to the situation told the Financial Times that the main reason was that the airline did not wish to fly crew or passengers into what looked like an increasingly risky area.
