A letter allegedly hand written by president Obama refers to conservative Americans who disagree with his policies as “tea baggers”.

The letter, written on White House headed paper, and signed by Obama, was a response to a strongly worded complaint from a Texas school teacher who wrote to express concern that the Affordable Care Act was having a negative effect on the Democratic Party and the president himself.

“This bill has caused such a divisive, derisive and toxic environment,” wrote Thomas Ritter, a fifth-grade teacher at Sally B. Elliott Elementary in Irving, Texas. “The reality is that any citizen that disagrees with your administration is targeted and ridiculed.”

The key passage of Ritter’s letter, which he suggests he hesitated to write for fear of “retribution”, states “I watched you make fun of tea baggers and your press secretary make fun of Ms. [Sarah] Palin which was especially beneath the dignity of the White House.”

Ritter concluded by writing “Do the right thing not the political thing. Suggest a bill that Americans can support.”

In response, the president is said to have sent a hand written note to Ritter, expressing that he appreciated the “concern about the toxic political environment right now.”

“I do have to challenge you, though, on the notion that any citizen that disagrees with me has been ‘targeted and ridiculed’ or that I have ‘made fun’ of tea baggers,” the president replied, using the same derogatory term as Ritter, but failing to enclose it in quotation marks as he did the other phrases in the same sentence.

“[I] defend strongly the right of everyone to speak their mind — including those who call me ‘socialist’ or worse,” Obama also notes in the letter.

The New York Post reports that Ritter has since put the president’s note up for sale on momentsintime.com. The website says that it has verified the authenticity of the letter.

“I am selling the letter because I am just so disappointed, and this Obamacare bill is wrong,” Ritter said, adding “The president told me what he thought I wanted to hear. The letter is just words on a paper. It doesn’t mean anything to me because Obama doesn’t mean any of it.”

In related news, a fresh set of polls concerning Obamacare reveals that more Americans than ever oppose the law and feel that it will not improve their lives in the long run.

“Approval of the law in two separate surveys this month has been the worst Gallup has measured to date,” the polling outfit’s analysis noted, “and Americans predict the law is more likely to hurt than help their own healthcare situation and the situation in the country as a whole.”
