In 1933 a terrorist set fire to the Reichstag in Germany and it was believed that “outside forces” had infiltrated the German “Fatherland” and committed this act. The German Parliament passed legislation which was entitled, “Law for Removing Distress for People and Reich” The legislation took power away from the Parliament and handed that power over to Hitler and his administration. Specific power that was handed over was the power to make treaties, power over the budget and sole power to make constitutional amendments for a period of four years. Hitler of course addressed the German Parliament reassuring them that the Reich administration would not abuse their new powers.

All of this was portrayed in the mini-series, “Rise of Evil“. But just to be sure I did some research on my own and discovered that the movie was accurate. I found my information at Liberty Gun Rights. Com in a Guest Editorial written by Rick Martin for the Hanford, California Sentinel. The powers that were granted to Hitler to protect the Fatherland were the same powers that robbed the German people of their constitutional rights and left them powerless against a tyrannical dictator.

Mr. Martin in his guest column also reveals that there are not only similarities between Hitler’s “Enabling Act” and the “Homeland Security” legislation that our government has enacted but that the Homeland Security legislation exceeds those powers granted to Hitler in 1933. Martin states that

“Shocking as it may seem the powers granted to President Bush by Congress in the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (HR 5005) are even more expansive than those Hitler received through the Enabling Act. It is dangerous to restructure the federal government in a way that would hasten a domestic police state”.

The sad fact of the matter is that most people who watched “ Rise to Power” don’t even realize the similarities between Hitler’s “Enabling Act” and present day Homeland Security legislation. Most people who watch documentaries or movies about Hitler have no problem admitting what a horrible man he was. They often ask questions such as, “ How could the German people give so much power?”

These same people are the ones that give you the “crazy look” when you try and tell them what a horrible piece of legislation that the Patriot Act is.

The reason people like me often receive the “crazy” or “you’re a kook” look by these people is the same reason people gave Hitler his broad powers and their freedom, blind patriotism. Please don’t misunderstand my words, patriotism is not a bad thing, and I don’t believe that President Bush is another Hitler. But the fact remains that a true patriot believes in the system of checks and balances that our government was originally founded upon. The founding fathers formed our government with the belief that states would maintain the majority of the power and that those states entered the Union as voluntary members. The federal government was to play a very limited role.

Homeland Security legislation in a sense federalizes the state and local governments and makes the federal government the sole sovereign entity. Our government tells us that this is done to protect our safety and freedom. This is a seriously flawed concept. We will never have safety if nothing is done to protect our borders and we will not have true freedom until we return to the very limited form of federal government that our nation was founded upon.

The reason that most people do not notice the similarities between Hitler’s “Enabling Act” and Homeland Security legislation is the fact that they are not educated about the principals in which our government was founded upon. Patriotism, in these troubled times, is defined by not questioning government and giving it your unwavering support. Anyone who does otherwise has his or her patriotism questioned. A true patriot aspires to protect and return our government to those principals our country was founded upon. In order to do that those of us who are educated on the subject of the Constitution and the principals in which our government was founded upon, have a duty to educate those who do not know those principals. It is our only hope to save our freedom and our country.

“Rise of Evil” An Important Lesson for All Americans

By Clint Lacy

I watched the conclusion of the CBS mini-series Rise of Evil last night and was surprised at the similarities between Hitler’s government reorganization and the reorganization of our federal government since Sept. 11th, 2001. Also surprising were the similarities for the reason that both governments were reorganized, terrorism.
