| border security was pushed further and further away from the minds of the American people. This is the worst possible situation we, as a nation, could be in. Think back to the days and weeks following 911. Remember the stories concerning the hijackers having crossed the borders illegally, some overstaying visas, others entering without the slightest knowledge of the government? I do. It was all over the news, being hammered into our minds 24 hours a day. The message was clear: the openness of our borders allowed the bad guys to get and stay in our country, and eventually murder thousands of innocent people. The solution was obvious: secure the borders, secure the nation. Yet over 18 months have passed, and the borders are still not secure. Think about this for a moment. Imagine a city built in a fertile river valley. This city thrives and prospers due to its location near the river. Unfortunately, one day the mighty river begins flooding the metropolis, causing severe destruction and a high number of deaths. The people, rightly outraged, demand something be done, so the mayor’s office springs into action. The city chief begins working on a plan to stop the river from flooding and destroying the town. Over the course of several weeks, the mayor narrows his possible options to two. Plan A is to build a dam to control the river, and prevent flooding from happening again. Plan B is to simply hand out life jackets and inflatable rafts to the citizens, and let them deal with the next horrible flood that comes along. Our government is much like the bumbling mayor who chooses Plan B. Instead of attacking the problems at the source, the borders, they have decided to concede defeat and simply let the people deal with whatever happens to be thrown at them. Whether it is a suitcase nuke or biological weapon. Sure, they’ll provide some training for city workers to manage an attack, but they refuse to throw money and manpower at the root of the problem. This is absolute insanity! If this is still the United States of America, we should make an effort to defend the integrity of our borders. If we can send troops to every stretch of the globe, why can we not defend our own backyard? Our brave young men and women of the Armed Forces defeated a country the size of California in roughly three weeks. That is remarkable. We have the best-equipped, most talented, and toughest soldiers in the history of the world. I firmly believe that they can achieve any objective that is given to them. So why not send them to where they are needed most? Why not allow our men and women of the service the honor of defending the “homeland”? Why not use the National Guard as an actual national guard, instead of sending them off to police foreign lands? There is a certain seedy element that, after hearing these facts, can muster only one retort to the obvious truth: the race card. These lowlifes (found on both sides of the border) contend that by defending our nation, we are somehow being racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. These same people support the current border policy, and frequently encourage the flow of greater numbers of illegal border crossings. These people should look back to the headlines of last week, where 18 human beings that were being smuggled into the country suffocated in the back of an eighteen-wheeler like animals. Effective border control could have prevented all of those folks from meeting a horrifyingly terrible death. Unfortunately, the “don’t ask don’t tell” open border philosophy of today lends itself to such endings. Those who argue for the continuance of the system as it stands now should take a share of the blame for the deaths of those poor souls, but they won’t. They would much rather let the problem continue, to let the blood flow, than to heal the wound. By making serious efforts to control our borders, we would be attacking the problem of terrorism before it attacks us. We would also put a stop to untold numbers of deaths and injuries caused by illegal border crossers and their cohorts. Thus, effective border control is not only practical, but also humanitarian. It must be the first priority of the 21st century, because if is not, the United States will not survive to see the 22nd. By securing our borders, we will secure our nation. |
| Secure the Borders, Secure the Nation By Kevin Newsom How many more people must die? How many more dead bodies will it take for the federal government to secure our borders? Since September 11, 2001, I have been pondering this question, and, after over a year and six months of waiting, I finally got the answer I was looking for. Absolute silence. While national “authorities” prepared mock chemical/biological warfare stunts in Chicago and Seattle last week, the issue of |
