| daring role next time. Is that third baseman in a slump against a certain pitcher? If so, he’ll probably perform better when facing someone else. People read and understand these signals easily. Unfortunately, there is a deeper, more important set of warnings coming from our society that is being discouraged, ignored, and killed by silence. These are the true signs of the times; the indicators of where, as a nation, we are going. From the steady and systematic decline of our youth and the abandonment of traditional American ideals, to the anti-freedom legislation that is being passed behind the backs of the American people, the signals are everywhere…hidden in plain sight. They are screaming to us, calling out for anyone and everyone to pay attention while there’s still time. One such example seems innocuous upon first glance. An article appearing on infowars.com describes the University of Massachusetts as being in the middle of changing their school mascot/nickname from the Minutemen to the Gray Wolves. The reasons given by the school’s athletic director appear at first to be purely for economic reasons, until he reveals that "The design company expressed some concern with the single-gender ethnicity of the Minuteman, and the fact he's carrying a firearm (in the logo) is also a concern." So, to translate, because the symbol is a gun-carrying white male, it is not appropriate. The author of the column questions the importance of this issue. After all, there are more important things than symbols, right? Wrong. A people and their history are connected by symbols of the past. By divorcing a society from its symbols, it is much easier to separate the people from their past. This, in America, is a dangerous thing. Losing the connections to our past means losing the will to fight for what we believe in, and losing the truth that resistance to tyranny IS NOT futile. When all such “offensive” symbols as the Minuteman have been removed, what will be left behind to symbolize the ideals of the American revolution? What seems to be an isolated incident of political correctness run amuck thus becomes another inch of ground lost in the battle to preserve the historical connection between the nation and its people. A second example is one that actually received heavy national attention. The story about the Illinois high school hazing incident, in which a group of senior girls beat up and forced a group of junior girls to eat cat food, “fish guts” and dirt, and then smothered them in feces. This story generated attention by the mainstream media, but the context in which the story was placed was completely off the mark. The news outlets only focused in on the actual incident itself, failing to address the greater problem of the utter lack of values and morality in many of the youth of today. What many pundits cry out against these days is immorality of the youth, or the rejection of moral behavior. These so-called experts couldn’t be more wrong. The problem does not concern immoral behavior, but amoral behavior. Instead of making a conscious rejection of traditional moral values and character issues, many of the young in America today don’t even understand the difference between right and wrong, between immoral and moral. This complete ignorance is amorality. The ability to humiliate and injure other humans as was displayed by the “powderpuff” girls is dependent on this apparent lack of right and wrong, and, most frighteningly, has been utilized by the great executioners of world history. The video brings to mind the concentration camp footage one can see on the history channel. A nation whose youth is riddled by such a lack of reasoning ability and compassion will pay dearly when the boys and girls grow up. The teens in that video will soon be the police, sales managers, teachers, bankers, and elected officials of tomorrow. Of course, that won’t be mentioned by the talking heads. What is the third and most stunning warning sign comes from The New York Times. The article briefly mentions that the Senate passed, on May 8, a bill which allows the federal government greater power to get secret warrants to spy on individuals suspected of being terrorists. There are two problems with this. The first is that the article makes it sound as if this newest loss of freedom is actually a victory for freedom! The opening paragraph mentions that, “Senate Republicans backed down Thursday from an effort to make permanent the Patriot Act's sweeping antiterrorism powers, clearing the way for passage of a less divisive measure”. So, instead of opening with the truth of the Feds having much more legal authority to get secret warrants on suspected individuals, the writer attempts to steer the reader away from that fact! This is sickening. The second problem is the article’s reliance on the bipartisan sell-outs known as democrats and republicans to tell the truth. The slime that is quoted continues the portrayal of the bill as a compromise that only effects foreigners living in the United States. Of course, we have heard this rhetoric before, when the Patriot Act was being forced through Congress and American citizens were “detained” for several months without access to a lawyer. The obvious question is then, what makes this time any different than the last time we were told American citizens have nothing to worry about? When you begin to put these news items into perspective, a pattern begins to emerge. A rejection of historical significance, a dumbing down of the youth, and the back stabbing of politicians all point to a nation that is sliding out of control into the abyss of a totalitarianism. A nation that is on the brink of absolute insanity. These are the signs of the times. |
| Signs of The Times By Kevin Newsom We read signs everyday. It’s become a necessity for survival in the modern world. The morning weather forecast provides a (sometimes) reliable blueprint on which to base our plans for work and play. The Dow Jones, unemployment numbers, and interest rates are signs that lead to the economic forecasts that dominate the news today. Even our favorite forms of entertainment are dependent on the ability to read signs, and forecast what happens next. Have the last three movies from that movie star bombed? If so, she will probably have to take a more |
