My focus this week centers on two individuals, a man and a woman, who came to understand reality via different paths. One took a plane from the Midwest to Asia, began to notice several differences in media and freedom, and couldn’t stop asking questions about why things weren’t better at home. Another, a woman in the South, listened to a radio talk show host named Alex Jones, began to research news and government actions on her own time, and then faced the consequences of her search. These brave souls revealed to me how they came to wake up, the reactions they encountered after so doing, and how they are using their knowledge to benefit the lives of every American. By sharing some of their experiences, not only will I illustrate how people of different backgrounds come to similar paths of understanding, but I also will point out what these people are doing with their understanding of current events, and why that is so important.

Ryan was a typical recent graduate from business school: ambitious, eager to make a good living, and confident in his worldview. He took pride in his family, his upbringing, and his education. He had good reason to do so. He had a lovely family, his grades were second to none, and shortly after graduation he went to work for a giant multinational corporation. Ryan was literally fresh out of the university when his career began. At 22, he was making a great salary, generally enjoying the benefits from his hard work, and the future seemed very clear to this young man. His political persuasion was, to use the media’s terms, “conservative” and libertarian. When asked to choose whom he voted for in elections, he stated with tones of regret that, “ I would definitely say I was a Republican.”

A few months into his tenure at the corporation, Ryan was offered the opportunity to go overseas for a span of one year. He jumped at the chance. His first stop was Australia, and then he moved on to Malaysia. It was there that the young professional first began to question his opinions, beliefs, and everything that he had been taught in school.

While he was away from the mainstream media, Ryan had an opportunity to think for himself, and to observe from afar the country that he loved so much being destroyed from within. He witnessed the 9-11 attacks, and the unholy destruction of civil liberties that occurred afterward, from a perspective (both mentally and physically) thousands of miles away. It was around the time of the USA Patriot Act that he finally discarded the notion of left/right, democrat/republican.  “Until you step back and look at the American political system you do not realize that the right and left are essentially the same. Politicians and the American media simply put a political smoke screen up that serves to confuse the public eye.”

When he returned home, the one-time proponent of the establishment system found that the country he once recognized had vanished. Gone were the slogans about fighting for God, country, and family. Instead, there was only the media mantra to give up more and more freedoms in order to stop terrorists. His one- time complacency had given way to anger, and he wondered aloud what his next move should be. But he had already made the most important move. The first move. It took a journey of thousands of miles for Ryan to take this first step towards freedom, but it was worth it. Because now he was awake, and because of that, Ryan is a hero.

The second story comes from a woman named Lori, who resides in the southern states. Her family was not a very political one, and she remembered no intense debates concerning politics when she was growing up. In fact, it was not until Lori joined the military later in her life that she was interested in politics at all. In an email, she told me that she: “never investigated anything I heard regarding politics and assumed that everything I heard was in the best interest of the American people and our soldiers.” I found this comment very enlightening and very familiar. Not only was it the same way I used to believe, but it is also the most common response heard from a stranger or acquaintance…that there is no possibility that the news media is misleading the public.

Six months ago, however, things changed for Lori. She was listening to a local Christian radio station, and heard the Alex Jones Show for the first time. In the beginning, she couldn’t really believe what was being said on the airwaves: “I was very skeptical but thought I'd listen anyway. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.” But the more she listened, the more she wanted to find out for herself. So this young woman began research on her own time, digging through site after site, in a frenzy to find the truth. What she found shocked her so much that several sleepless nights soon followed.

After recovering from the initial strain, Lori decided that she would tell her friends and family about her discoveries. She was met with incredible resistance. “I emailed my brother about a couple of things I had read on Alex's web site and what I had heard on the radio program. He emailed me back trying to say that information had been discredited. When I would email to ask how it was discredited he would never write back. He is a big follower of Rush Limbaugh.” Her sister told her that she thought Jones was just plain crazy, but never discussed the actual issues mentioned on his site.

Lori, however, wasn’t deterred from continuing her quest for knowledge after facing such rejection. She continues to be active in learning more about such nefarious plans as the Homeland Security Department, and is more than willing to inform others about the subject. There is no fear to tell the truth for her. By speaking out, she has taken the next step towards freedom. For her courage to learn about what is going on and persistence in telling the people about it, Lori is a hero.

By waking up and informing ourselves about current social and political realities, and then discussing these realities plainly with those we encounter, we take two powerful steps towards freedom. The next step is to break through. Break through the barriers of silence put into place by the media. Break through the impediments of ignorance put into place by the political establishment. Become a part of your local government by running for office. Introduce bills to your county commissioner’s court to revoke unconstitutional agencies like
Alex Jones is doing. Cities across the nation, from Denver and Austin to Boston are beginning to resist federal plans for a hostile takeover! Join the movement to preserve and protect our rights! Be a hero! Wake Up, Speak Out, and Break Through!

The First Steps to Freedom: Waking Up, Speaking Out, and Breaking Through

By Kevin Newsom

The truth can be a very disturbing enterprise. At times it can seem overwhelming. In other instances, the truth (and the search for it) can be extremely frightening. What is more frightening, however, is the reluctance and flat-out resistance that so many have encountered when speaking for freedom, and for truth. Over the course of four weeks, I have received several emails from readers, detailing their personal experiences with friends, family, and the outside world in general.
