conservatives would have been up in arms; however, because it is George W. Bush they fall in lockstep with him and declare that it is all “good”.

For instance, the U.S.A. Patriot Act, which was passed without any of the Senators or Congressmen having read it, has draconian measures in it that strip away Constitutional freedoms that our Founding Fathers held as fundamental to a free people. When Clinton tried to rush through a similar bill after the Oklahoma City bombing of the Murrah building conservatives mounted a barrage of complaints that derailed the worst aspects of the bill.

Along comes 9/11 and George W. Bush, and a bill with worse provisions than the previous one passes with barely a whisper of protest and most conservatives hailing it as a necessary measure in the War on Terror that was foisted upon the United States. Never mind that the powers given to the Bush administration will someday come to haunt all of us in a worse way than they already are being wielded by the “trusted” Bush administration.

The new Homeland Security Agency gives massive power to Tom Ridge the Czar of the agency. Mr. Ridge and Attorney General John Ashcroft exert power that Janet Reno and Bill Clinton only dreamed of. Look at the way that these two stalwart conservatives have conducted themselves and then consider how these offices will be run when a different administration takes control – one that doesn’t have the “restraint” of the present conservatives. If you are not trembling in your shoes, you haven’t been paying attention.

If we are fighting a War on Terrorism, then why are our borders still as porous as they were before 9/11? Where is the military that should be protecting our country from invasion? Our enemies are free to invade our nation by either the Mexican or Canadian border. It is so easy that no one really knows how many illegals and aliens cross them. It is only known that it is in the multiple tens of thousands every year – or higher. It is an unchecked invading army.

We allow legal immigrants to come in from nations known to sponsor and support terrorism and do little to check these people out. There are a few cursory items being checked on some of them now, but it is limited and easily thwarted by someone willing to simply lie on the form they are required to fill out.

If we are fighting a War on Terrorism, then why do we give comfort and aid to Russia and China – the two biggest suppliers of terrorists and despots? Russia (as was pointed out by this column previously) has supplied and continues to supply Iraq with technology that can harm our soldiers in Iraq. China continues to help improve and build North Korea’s military and missile program so that North Korea can now target our west coast cities with nuclear-tipped missiles – and we give them aid.

A long-term, no-end-in-sight, War on Terror means we will continue to have restraints put on our freedoms with calls for additional freedoms to be sacrificed. Be ready for more Orange Alerts and beware the Martial Law Red Alerts. Have you noticed all of the security cameras at stop lights? They’re aimed at the people in their cars – “say cheese”.

Welcome to the new Police State. This is only the beginning – be prepared for the worst.

Police State

By Kirt R. Poovey

We have discussed two of the three goals of the Iraqi War – Oil and Global Positioning. Now we will discuss the third goal – the American Police State.

No one, of course, will call it that, but the effect will be the same. Not from a conservative, Republican administration Bush defenders will claim, but the evidence is overwhelming. If President Clinton had tried to institute the programs and control that Bush and his administration have, the Republicans and
