in a country where the government is entitled to open your mail, eavesdrop on your phone conversations, or intercept your e-mail communications; if we lived in a country where people could be held in jail indefinitely based on what they write or think, or based on mere suspicion that they are up to no good, the government would probably discover more terrorists or would-be terrorists, just as it would find more lawbreakers generally,” so said Russ Feingold, a Democrat from Wisconsin, in an address to the Senate on October 11, 2001.

His analysis is accurate and for some that is comforting. These people would feel better knowing that the government was looking over their shoulder to make sure that no terrorist was hatching a plan to conduct mayhem. It is unfortunate that a seemingly vast majority of Americans must feel this way. Where is the outcry for the lost freedoms? It has been muffled by those who want to feel “secure”.

What these people have not figured out is that such a “secure” nation is a dangerous nation for its own people. The people of Iraq lived in such a “secure” nation. China is such a “secure” nation. Recently, we have been reminded how “secure” the nation of Cuba is. Castro does not put up with anyone who might upset the “security” of the nation.

Those people wanting a “secure” nation with all of the above listed “security” acts should listen to Mr. Feingold’s conclusion about a nation that had all of those capabilities to make the nation “secure”.

“But that wouldn't be a country in which we would want to live,” Feingold concluded. A wise Democrat! My question is, where are all of the conservative Republicans saying “Ditto!”? Is the silence from the conservative wing due to their blind trust in President Bush and the Republican administration?

It is time to listen to men of a different age who showed great wisdom and insight. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis in 1928 said, "The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachments by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding." Such a quote could easily be applied to our present President. Some would say that he is not well-meaning, but instead knows full well what he is doing and where he is headed. Whether that be true or false, the point is that conservatives as a whole look upon President Bush as an honorable man whom they are willing to put their trust in.

Nevertheless, they should heed Judge Brandeis’ counsel as it applies to President Bush. They should also remember that in 2004 there will be another Presidential election and George W may not win. Contrary to what some may think, he is not a shoe-in. His father was riding a crest of war victory in Iraq and popularity in 1991. In 1992, an almost unheard of governor from a little noticed southern state, Arkansas, won the presidency.

Could history repeat itself in 2004? The novel, The Prophecy – 2024, makes a prediction on the 2004 election. It deals with losses of freedoms foisted on Americans by a tyrannical Presidency. It was written well before 9/11 but predicts the imposition of a USA Patriot Act style bill after an act of terror in the United States. The second half of the book, Tragedy and Hope – 2024, is being sent to the printers and should be out later this month.

These books, this column, and this website are designed to educate Americans. Will they listen and take action, or will they acquiesce to tyranny?

Blind Trust

By Kirt R. Poovey

TIA, USA Patriot Act, Patriot Act II, Homeland Security, and more are enough to make one wonder where freedom went and when the new U.S. Gestapo will come knocking on your door in the middle of the night. But don’t we need some added security since 9/11? Isn’t it necessary to sacrifice some of our liberties for security?

“There is no doubt that if we lived in a police state, it would be easier to catch terrorists. If we lived in a country where police were allowed to search your home at anytime for any reason; if we lived
