| quietly force the consumption of food-based drugs and vaccines upon the public? The acronym GMO stands for genetically modified organism, and is used to describe substances altered at the basic genetic or DNA level. Transgenic is another term used to describe the transfer of genetic material from one species to another. The basic premise of genetically modified plants and animals is the insertion of desired traits from another species to achieve a modified version of the host plant or animal. Examples of desired traits achieved via transgenic methods are insect/disease resistance, higher yields, and even better tasting product. Rather than spraying pesticides on crops, it is more convenient and cost effective to simply engineer resistance within the plant itself. Unfortunately, the profitability of these plants does not always extend to farmers since a “terminator gene” is often included, thus sterilizing any seeds produced by the product, and forcing the farmers who use these crop types to buy new seed each growth season. In essence, the seed companies almost hold copyright protection on their product. Some even predict that the only seeds available for use in the future will be those with this termination technology. One of the more recent developments in genetic engineering is the insertion of genetic material into plants that instruct them to manufacture pharmaceuticals. Future uses for these plants possibly include vaccinations in corn, bananas, or potatoes as well as the basis for the delivery of many drugs through snacks. What a convenient delivery system is being developed. Who can tell the difference between a modified banana and one that is standard? Since these practices are becoming more prevalent, what will prevent these products from entering the mainstream food supply system? Anyone remember the Starlink corn scare a couple of years ago? It seems almost inevitable that a similar “accident” could occur with corn or another substance engineered to contain a vaccine or drug compound, even though stringent safeguards against contamination have supposedly been developed. Furthermore, the natural flow of genetic material between plants must be considered since cross contamination between these genetically manufactured plants and wild varieties could easily occur. Many cases of this type of contamination have already been documented worldwide. The companies that genetically modify plants are not even required by U. S. law to disclose what genes have been added to these plants or the derivative organisms involved since the confidentiality of sensitive business information must be protected. This fact itself is absolutely frightening! It seems we are completely at the mercy of the partnership between profit-driven companies and the government to ensure the safety of our food supplies against accidental or intentional contamination by drug producing plants. One Texas company, ProdiGene, is currently working to produce a plant-based HIV vaccination. This process involves the splicing of corn genes with the primate version of the immunodeficiency virus to produce a protein called gp120. This protein is a known trigger for the production of antibodies against the invading virus. ProdiGene announced in April of last year that the SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) protein gp120 was successfully expressed from transgenic corn, and that an important milestone was reached in the production of an edible AIDS vaccine. The National Institutes of Health have aided ProdiGene by providing a $300,000 grant to conduct this research, and are conducting the clinical trials involved (yet another wonderful public-private partnership). This research is considered critical since HIV infections have reached endemic proportions in many African nations, and this edible vaccination could possibly be used to inoculate large numbers of people in those developing countries at a fraction of the cost incurred by more standard immunizations. Inexpensive and widely available drugs and vaccinations are the purported benefits of these experiments, but can these goals safely be actualized? Are the results of genetic manipulation much less than the often-hyped benefits, and is a sinister plan to radically alter our food supply secretly being carried out? Our government has already legislated forced inoculations if certain conditions are met. If a vaccine can simply be engineered into our food, the government’s stated goals would easily be achieved, and the freedom of choice completely ignored. Would we even be aware that this was occurring? The dangerous and controversial practice of vaccine producing foods should not be allowed to operate under a cloak of secrecy, but should instead be subject to complete disclosure or be suspended. Since business and governmental secrecy are paramount (while personal secrecy is greatly diminished, if not completely dead), it is highly unlikely any fair debate concerning this subject will ever be realized. It certainly appears we may already be the unwitting customers of a hidden pharmacy. ------------------------------------- Rob Ronning welcomes your comments at ronning@sunflower.com. ------------------------------------- Permission to reprint this article is granted providing the original author is cited and a link to PRISON PLANET.com is included. | Pharmacy In Your Food? The Real Biological Attack By Rob Ronning The saying “You are what you eat” is an adage most of us have heard for years, urging the consumption of foods considered nutritionally superior over a diet known to contain less beneficial or harmful substances. Increasingly, that statement could be used to represent the trending scientific modification of various human and animal foodstuffs. Recent developments in genetic engineering indicate the possible production of vaccinations inside modified plants. Is the genetic manipulation of these plants a breakthrough development greatly beneficial to all humanity, or is it a scheme to |
