  • Are the Greek riots a taste of things to come?

    Peter Popham
    London Independent

    Saturday, Dec 13, 2008

After firing 4,600 tear-gas canisters in the past week, the Greek police have nearly exhausted their stock. As they seek emergency supplies from Israel and Germany, still the petrol bombs and stones of the protesters rain down, with clashes again outside parliament yesterday.

Bringing together youths in their early twenties struggling to survive amid mass youth unemployment and schoolchildren swotting for highly competitive university exams that may not ultimately help them in a treacherous jobs market, the events of the past week could be called the first credit-crunch riots. There have been smaller-scale sympathy attacks from Moscow to Copenhagen, and economists say countries with similarly high youth unemployment problems such as Spain and Italy should prepare for unrest.

Ostensibly, the trigger for the Greek violence was the police shooting of a 15-year-old boy, Alexis Grigoropoulos. A forensic report leaked to Greek newspapers indicated he was killed by a direct shot, not a ricochet as the policeman’s lawyer had claimed. The first protesters were on the streets of Athens within 90 minutes of Alexis’s death, the start of the most traumatic week Greece has endured for decades. The destructiveness of the daily protests, which left many stores in Athens’s smartest shopping area in ruins and caused an estimated €2bn (£1.79bn) in damage, has stunned Greece and baffled the world. And there was no let-up yesterday, as angry youths shrugged off torrential rain to pelt police with firebombs and stones, block major roads and occupy a private radio station.

    (ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)

Their parents grope for explanations. Tonia Katerini, whose 17-year-old son Michalis was out on the streets the day after the killing, emphasised the normality of the protesters. “It’s not just 20 or 30 people, we’re talking about 1,000 young people. These are not people who live in the dark, they are the sort you see in the cafes. The criminals and drug addicts turned up later, to loot the stores. The children were very angry that one of them had been killed; and they wanted the whole society not to sleep quietly about this, they wanted everyone to feel the same fear they felt. And they were also expressing anger towards society, towards the religion of consumerism, the polarisation of society between the few haves and the many have-nots.”

Protest has long been a rite of passage for urban Greek youth. The downfall of the military dictatorship in 1974 is popularly ascribed to a student uprising; the truth was more complicated, but that is the version that has entered student mythology, giving them an enduring sense of their potential. So no one was surprised that Alexis’s death a week ago today brought his fellow teenagers on to the streets. But why were the protests so impassioned and long-lasting? “The death of this young boy was a catalyst that brought out all the problems of society and of youth that have been piling up all these years and left to one side with no solutions,” said Nikos Mouzelis, emeritus professor of sociology at LSE. “Every day, the youth of this country experiences further marginalisation.”

Although Greece’s headline unemployment of 7.4 per cent is just below the eurozone average, the OECD estimates that unemployment among those aged 15 to 24 is 22 per cent, although some economists put the real figure at more like 30 per cent.

“Because of unemployment, a quarter of those under 25 are below the poverty line,” said Petros Rylmon, an economist at Linardos, the Labour Institute of the Greek trade unions. “That percentage has been increasing for the past 10 years. There is a diffused, widespread feeling that there are no prospects. This is a period when everyone is afraid of the future because of the economic crisis. There is a general feeling that things are going to get worse. And there is no real initiative from the government.”

    1. Genki Sudo Says:

suprise suprise…..israel comes to save the day when you want to opress dissent. Where would we be without israels copious supply of tear gas.

    2. Daniel seeker of truth, wisdom and cold beer Says:

      LOL ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

      And who supplies Israel?

    3. VoiceOfCommonSense Says:

The world is collapsing in on itself, of course this is a sign of things to come! What we are seeing now is the preliminary stages of the total collapse of a 100 year monetary pyramid scheme that will lead us into the early stages of the first one world government in the hsitory of our species….

    4. Alex (not Jones) Says:

Maybe but remember we have 80,000,000 firearms privately owned.

    5. Mushroom Mark Says:

The riots are comforting. Comforting to know there will be a fucking revolution when the shit hits the fan. This will happen everywhere. Steal some shit, burn some shops down, jack some cars. And cops with tear-gas should attract bullets.

    6. Graham Says:

Unlike Greek kids, Australian kids are going to be fed into the NWO meat grinder by their parents.

Australia is a the leading edge for the Globalists.

The Australian media is reporting schools are about to introduce ‘humanist classes’ to deny any God or supernatural deities. See the link below.

It is admitted, these classes are to indoctrinate Australian children into the New World Order.

The NWO wants our kids. First it’s their minds. Later they’ll then come for them bodily for Soylent green and their human meat grinder.

Get this. The propaganda course they want to Australian kids in schools include; World Citizenship, art of living and enviroment!!!

No doubt these classes will teach the children their own death is good. Suicide is good. The early demise will help the planet by extinquishing their own carbon foot print. No doubt the family they leave behind will profit in the form of carbon credits they can spend at the mall buying useless slave labor Chinese goods!!!!

You think this sick scenario is a joke? The Australian national Broadcaster ABC TV already has an online interactive children’s game which encourages children to set the date they should live to based on their carbon foot print. The inference is need to kill themselves for the planet. True. This is too sick to make up.

These irresponsible Aussie parents will hand over up their children willingly. They will wave as their precious babies put their little hands into the sweaty blood stained palms of these NWO killers, who will turn and smile with dark grins, as they walk off with the innocent children, who were entrusted to them by stupid parents who don’t know or don’t want to know of the dangers of the NWO.

The NWO is now breaking the surface. No more in the shadows. They’re closing in for the kill. The local dissident killings, which will accompany the mass world depopulation extermination, won’t even rate a mention.

The shame is Australian sheeple parents don’t know about the NWO, or don’t want to know. Instead they are engrossed in sport, TV, celebrity, recreational shopping and misdirection. What do you expect from a nation that has more sheep than people.

Humanist Society education director Harry Gardner said he had designed a course to be taught from prep to year 6 called “Applied Ethical Education — Humanism for Schools”. It covers subjects such as the art of living, the environment, philosophy, science and world citizenship. The curriculum is likely to be submitted for approval next year.

    7. caleb Says:

The problem with the so called democracy of ‘capitalism’, it is leaves people, the vast majority of society who simply wish to orchastrate their peaceful lives with happiness and joy and ultimately decide their own destiny, without any voice in society. As politicans jossel for the favour and reward of big businesses, the peoples voice is continually corrupted and ignored, and instead of sending the message of their voice, they are being told to shut up and listen and follow anothers voice, who doesnt represent them, and only represents the 1% of the worlds population who controls 96% of the worlds wealth. This is my problem with the capitalist psuedo democracy in the united states. Barack obama isnt even in office, yet he is already 750 million in debt of his own pocket to big business, just to ensure he got their in the first place. Imagine how many false flags and favours he is going to have to pull for people who only represent 1% of the population? imagine 280 million(99%) americans with guns being told to shut up and do as their told after 8 years of bush?
What is happening in greece is about to start errupting everywhere. Iceland has already been torn to peices because the people have been decieved, thailand on the other hand has managed to retake their own government through people power. The problem in greece is that the youth of greece has simply been told to shut up and follow for too long. Most people seem to forget, that the euro dollar was only introduced about 2 years ago, which again most greeks didnt want, and made everything twice as expensive for the average person, yet twice as lucrutitive for big business. coupling these factors with the greek governments decade long neglect of social reforms to help the youth with employment, education and meaningful dedication to improving the chances of of a decent life and living, along with the police force who are only known as ‘corrupt pig bastards’ in greece murdering in cold blood a popular 15 year old boy, a fellow young brother caught in the greek struggle, And you have the reciepe for whaat is known as a ‘revolution’.
A message to the rich and powerful around the world should be greece. Greece will not bow to the police or their corrupt government, ultimately greece will fall, after 7 days of the rioting their movement to oust their government is only growing stronger, not to mention its appeal spreding across europe. Greece will fall to the youth, and begin to inspire others around the world to reclaim the wealth and prosperity of their homelands which is rightfully theirs, to reclaim their voice among society which has been silenced for too long, ultimately to reclaim control of their lives and toss out the evil that is trying to corrupt them from within.Societies around the world are on the brink of great change which will oust the old men and times and usher in a new era. But please believe me my american brothers, it is not the change obama talks about, that is the change ‘hitler’ believed in, and that is the change they want you to follow, instead of being able to reclaim your own voice in society.

    8. Graham Says:

Below I found the link for the carbon footprint game for kids. Check it out. Kids play the game online to determine when they should die for the good of the planet! Sicko stuff when you consider this is an Australian government funded initiative.

Australia is a NWO stalwart. They are leading this stuff. Watch out for them.

      http://wattsupwiththat.com/200.....hould-die/

    9. Mushroom Mark Says:

I’ll have to die in 31.6 years.. Another test online reported my real age (based on lifestyle) was 74.2 instead of 21. So I can expect to live for about 10-20 years and shouldn’t feel guilty about the environment AT ALL. It’s all you other (long life-expectancy) fucks that are ruining the planet :P

    10. mary Says:

Alex Jones should cover this situation in Greece. These protesters/rioters are not against the new world order but are agent provocateurs (they are communists and anarchists) that were set in motion by a pre-meditated attack. The protesters say from a site they have that the policeman who did the shooting has ties to a Nazi group there.
      http://www.occupiedlondon.org/.....azi-group/
The picture of the Nazi with knife sure looks staged. The Greek people are being set up by the communists to put them into a state of emergency. Can’t you see through this? This is not something good. Even Alex Jones shows you in one of his videos how the communists are agent provocateurs. Get Alex Jones to cover this. Could it be that the cop who killed the kid did this intentionally to start up this stuff? Everyone knows that in Greece especially an act like this would cause riots. The history of the coup in the 70s shows this. But, the majority of the population there knows, too, that communists/anarchists don’t produce anything or solve anything or stand for anything for the common man there. So, don’t be so seduced to think that this is a justified “uprising.” It is similar to the Mumbai thing. Something smells.

    11. MARK OF THE BEAST Says:

YES CIVIL UNREST COMING TO AMERICA IN THE NEAR FUTURE. YES AND THE MOST VULNERABLE STATES ARE MI, WI, IL, IN, NY, CA, MO, PA, TX. YES CHICAGO MAFIA MOVES INTO THE WHITE HOUSE AND SEEKS TO IMPOSE NWO. THIS WILL CAUSE MASSIVE CIVIL
OBEDIENCE AND RIOTS SOON. I JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY OBAMA THE MESSIAH, HAS AGREED WITH B GROUP TO TAKE THE FALL FOR THIS REVOLUTIONARY ATMOSPHERE. WHAT A SUCKER! THE VERY CLOWNS THAT ELECTED THIS FOOL WILL BE THE ONES TO STORM THE BASTIL. IRONIC BUT THE DIE HAS BEEN CAST.

    12. _ Says:

The Greek riots a taste of things to come?

      LMFAO!

One person is killed in Athens and the whole damn country riots fiercly for weeks.

The U.S. Government kills 3,000 of its own citizens and is trying to kill/enslave millions more and, 7 years later, the TRUTHERS are still lingering on the internet, smoking their weed, playing their XBox 360, pacified and afraid to act.

Greeks. Truthers. What a sad comparison.

    13. edisonoside Says:

Everything that’s caused by man falls into 2 groups..officially every man made chaos caused by the establishment is an automatic conspiracy..when the common people cause it it’s called crime…When a middle easterner does it it’s called “TERROR”… The term “Either your with them or against us”..against them and your actions fall under the crime/terror category, with them then it’s called conspiracy… NO questions allowed.

    14. brett Says:

They want us to riot. Which is why we must not. Stay in your home and use self-defense to protect and feed your family. Ride it out. Riots will only bring martial law.

    15. WILD MAN Says:

as sad as all this IS, I dont believe that ALL riots always are the work of ” agents provocateurs” – you sound a bit like a deng xiao ping there …. I guess a lot of it is indeed REAL anger and the shooting of the kid was the feather that broke the branch ….just think a bit logically: a few provocateurs would NEVER be able to ignite whole countries, that idea is silly! there may be ” provocateurs ” among the youth but there is a GENUINE hatred and rage wich comes out now. and its JUSTIFIED. the burgeoisie cries over a few hundred burnt cars whilst in america the NASDAQ gangster who stole 50 billion – is set free on a ridiculous bail of ten million quid whilst you stay in jail if you stole a pair of shoes, damn!
anyone who has watched the movie CHILDREN OF MEN will not be surprised at all, this film has shown the entire scenario in 2006 and who would have thought it that ” only ” 2 years later reality SURPASSES the movie almost: its true, western civilisation ( and not ONLY that, look at thailand) is increasingly getting ungovernable ….

Americans will not do anything until such event or ??? arises. Were busy with American Idol, so arm yourself. Than!! once it breaks out here, than we’ll really see if all Americans are serious about they say. I think we’ll fold, I have no feeling of reliance on the majority of American citizens. Most Citizens would just speak volumes of diplomacy and news bull shit, where were heading is to Violence, and when talks drag on for a hundred years, Violence is a solution. Cops are quit to pull triggers, arrest, jail house country and we take it right up the ass for them with a grin and no lube. Not even a reach around!!

I know few who would and few who are already READY for this to come and that includes me.
Americans have too much to lose in their view and not willing to get arrested just yet over voicing there opinion, which! just falls on deaf ears anyways! Gov’t would love to see it, especially the Polls & coppers. Happy to read some posts that understand the world sucks right now. People fear their Gov’t there is tyranny, Gov’t fears the people, there is liberty

      Liberty or Death for me.

    21. Revolt426 Says:

You cannot compare 9-11 to the Greek Riots, whoever did that. First off the Greek ecoenomy is in freefall collapse and they have hyperinflation. Secondly, their has been no flase flag attack to confuse the citizens, they know who their enemy is. The greeks have had enough BS and they are sick of it, but the damage is being done by the COPS. the cops are hiring fascist anarchists to burn and loot stores and destroy property.

    27. Draconius Horribilis Says:

The problem is that the Greek government is soft and treated these vermin with kid gloves. If I were the ruler of Greece I would have initiated the Bakersfield response, as made famous in the film “The Running Man”. This human garbage is a threat to order, and they should be dealt with accordingly. Slaughter enough of the scumbags and the rest will quickly fall in line. They are nothing more than Communists, anarchists, criminals.

    28. Backwoods Jimmy Says:

Amazing what a thousand like minded people can bring down corruption if even for a couple days…

Will the police kill more Teenage Kids?

maybe a few less now the focus is back on police corruption…

You name “human garbage” people who wants a revolution for their kids to live in a better future. The simple fact that you dare name there people “human garbage” just shows how low humanity has descended and how little intelligence you have.

Anyway, are you a disinfo agent or your simply full of shit?

saying that people should get slaughtered makes you a person who does not deserve to live free… they should lock you up and never let you out of the nuthouse again.

may you lose your sight and hearing…. and your voice! because what you say is shit… what you hear is only what you want to hear…. and what you see is only what you want to see…. and when i look at your comment…. they should take away all you wants and needs for life!

    32. Intuitive Logic Says:

    34. Graham Says:

A 15 year old boy was shot by police in Australia, in similar circumstance to the Greek incident, and nothing happened.

Australians are just disarmed Americans. Dribbling, babbling, stupified, cowardly retards. Heads down, munching on the grass, following the football scores and watching TV.

The place to express your distain was the ballot box.

Did you march for Ron Paul?

Did you refuse to vote when your controllers gave you tweedle dee and tweedle dum so you would think you had choice? Now you talk of violence.

Did you get active during the election to expose the two party fraud? Now you talk of violence.

The constitution was trampled by the bail out bill and you remained silent? Now you talk of violence.

The President Elect is not a US citizen and you are silent. Now you talk of violence.

There are hundreds of things you can do to bring all this to an end. Violence is not one of them. They will kill you. Don’t you idiots get it.

Guns are to protect your family not to change your government. The electoral system is for that.

Get politically active. You will change more this way than with a gun.

Take back the system by form community groups.

Take over government at the local level first and work up from there.

Educate each other. Talk to each other at every opportunity. Alert each other as the media will not.

Blog. Text. Hand out Alex’s videos on street corners if you must. Keep them near you for any opportunity.

    35. Sad day for the Republic Says:

went to the gun show in Vegas today. I’ve never in 8 years of going to these seen such a buying frenzy. Standing room only. one vendor told me they sold a pallet of .223 ammo in an hour and a half. I saw ammo and rifles leaving at an incredible rate. they were almost out of reloading supplies after only 3 hours of a 2 day show, people aren’t going to take it much longer.

      Long live the republic

    36. mary Says:

If these riots have a good intention, then why are shops being destroyed? Is the average Greek small business the new world order? Greece is full of small individually owned shops, and this destroys their livelihood. I am very sure the Greeks are fed up, as many of them are nationalistic and don’t want to become cookie cutter robots, but I’m guessing the ones that are at home are the non-communists. By the way it’s Alex Jones that uses the term provocateurs when he approaches a group of communists in NY. Lots of malintentioned groups use them. I don’t claim to know anything. Just remember that Alex Jones has some good points in his films that communists are on the wrong side. Don’t necessarily believe everything you read in short snippets in the newspaper. I wish Alex Jones would report more on this and say what he has learned from his sources. On the site that I tried to post previously (the one based in London which seems to be someone involved in the riots), nowhere is it written that they are against anything new world order from what I could find. And these riots could have bad consequences. I wonder if Greece’s enemies are going to use this chaos as an opportunity to gain something. We’ll soon see what comes of this. Greeks get outraged about any unjust death and rightly so, but is the destruction of property of innocent people the answer? It’s chaos. Whereas the ones that manipulate the masses act more “surgically” and calculated, and that is why they are so successful. Learn from your enemy, as they say. Again, I don’t know much, but don’t cheer until you know what you are cheering for. For now, I can only read and watch. If anyone is over there and sees what is going on first-hand, please tell us if the reports are false that it is communists and anarchists causing the riots. Thanks.

    37. expatbrit Says:

No. 28 You are first on my list – those who you refer to as scumbags are all around you. Mostly normal people driven to the brink. Why do you think the scum bags have been building camps, prisons and containment areas furiously over the past few years.

I suppose the people of Iceland who have been rioting are aslo scumbags!

I think it was Plato that said -’ignorance is the purest form of evil’ You are truly one ignorant individual!!!

    38. Ranib Says:

what if this riot happend in Ireland? would all the store be destroyed except the pubs?

    39. regularguy101 Says:

I thought I read somewhere that all the policemans houses were being burned down. I think everybody everywhere should get to know their protecters better so if there is ever an emergency you can know just where to go to find them.

the hate for the govt is thick and it should be they loot gutted and raped all of America
and the Elite want to leave to Dubai as fast as they can get out of Dodge

there is a mad frenzied panic to get to Dubai where elites only are welcomed.

    43. Huggles Says:

In Europe and particularly the UK, the police have invoked an outreach programme that goes beyond the criminal classes into the ostensibly law abiding community. This is known as organised stalking and it is a service for hire.

This culture of impunity has allowed police to interfere with, harass and even kill civilians under the belief that all subsequent concerns would be swept under the carpet as it usually happens. It does get swept under the carpet repeatedly until a tipping point is reached, then community either disintegrates into general criminality or erupts. By this time the state steps in, reshuffles senior police officers and the cycle repeats itself.

The question is, who polices the police?

    44. NewWorldOrder Says:

Our government needs to ensure riots like these do not happen in the peaceful streets of the United States.

If attacked the Police and Military have the Right and obligation to defend them selves and shoot these terrorists dead!

To save the lives and property of those that chose to follow the laws must always prevail over those that don’t.

    45. DestroyerofWorlds Says:

I don’t actually care about the cause of the riots in Greece, or anything to do with Greece for that matter. What is interesting is how it is dealt with. Greece, at least, appears to have no means to control its population with less-the-lethal means. That is important for the people of Greece to know, and for members of Europe. Greece is important for the US in learning HOW tactics are being used. I feel sorry for the citizens of Greece in this regard, but we should learn from their tactical mistakes. So far, it looks like they have the upper hand….thousands of tear gas canisters sure hasn’t dampened their resolve…

    46. navarino Says:

I’m there. I spent 2 nights in the Polytechnic University of Athens. It is not only anarchists and communists. Don’t believe the propaganda.

And even if there are many anarchists and communists. So what? Many Greeks have bought into the far left.

But that doesn’t mean they’re stupid. They just don’t know all the facts about the origins of communism. But they still are on the right track.

      AND FOR YOUR INFORMATION.

The guys burning down MOM AND POP SHOPS are WORKING WITH THE POLICE.

THIS IS VERY WELL DOCUMENTED AND I HAVE SEEN IT FIRST HAND AS WELL.

They are trying to distract the attention away from the root of the protests (eco socio problems) and focus all the attention on the EXTREMISTS AND HOODED EVIL DOOERS.

PLEASE DO NOT FALL FOR THIS!

      All the best,

      Kostas

    47. Will Wilson Says:

I’m glad to see at least one other American has figured out that Dubai is the destination of the evil ones. First they screw the world over and then they want to get away from the wrath of the US public as well as uncounted numbers around the world by fleeing to their overseas New Palm Springs. When will those bastards at last be brought to justice?

I like reading all the responses and opinions. I’ve read something to the effect of what I am about to say again and again on this site (and I agree with it every time). No one should stoop low in reaction to events. If you’ve got something valid, don’t discredit it by using inappropriate behavior. Otherwise, people with a rotten agenda but who act more calculated will come out looking better than those with a good agenda but who act with hot heads. 2 billion euros in destruction is what is happening in Greece. Whatever the rioters’ end goal (good or bad), I bet quiite a few people over there are furious to see everything laid to waste when Greece isn’t exactly the land of plenty in the first place!

    49. mary Says:

Thank you very much Kostas #47 for your information. I just posted a new comment before reading yours, but your information about the mom and pop shops and who is doing that destruction is appalling. Thanks for the information from a first-hand observer. That is impossible to get in the mass media. Thanks, and sixaritiria!

    50. Sad day for the Republic Says:

#45 Laws that are against our constitution are not valid laws. and we will see riots in American cities. Police and military that would enforce invalid laws ARE the terrorists, and yes they should be treated as such. Greece is just a small precurser to what is coming in the very near future. There is a huge storm brewing and like #42 said “it’s a tinder box one spark and it will explode.” Let us not forget it was the goverment(s) that caused it in the first place, and you want them to protect us? Put the crack pipe down and get real. I don’t want or need the goverment to protect me. God, guns and guts made this country free, limp dicks like you gave it away.

      Long live the Republic!

    51. Lasthorseman Says:

Don’t think they are not learning from this. This is Greece and as such they are about twenty years back in time from us here in “the states”. The tactical observations from this event will be used against us here. Maybe not though as we here are far too retarded to demand such things as rights.

    52. Manos Says:

If having a people who are 20 years behind means that people have more guts than the “enlightened” over in the states, then the rest of the world needs to get 20 years behind as well.

    53. rlilewis Says:

I’m glad they are standing up to the government thugs, the fact that police blatantly lie to cover their own gangsters just shows whos side they are really on. Its exactly the same here in Britian, the police have lied through their teeth in regards to Menezes shooting. We must never forget what happened…

    54. mary Says:

The destruction of property including the statue of Rigas Feraios is very sad. I just can’t believe anything good can come of this. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Pasok party wants to take over (is asking for resignation of Karamanlis), but they had plenty of scandals. Is this really going to bring back the dead boy? Destroying the statue of a poet who stood for freedom and spray-painting it with an anarchist symbol. Not enough people have their head screwed on straight. This is a tragedy all around. I just don’t see how any political party can solve this.
