Half Life 2: Anti New World Order Video Game

Prison Planet | December 4 2005

From a reader.....

I enjoyed your analysis of the brainwashing computer games that are currently in circulation, and I felt that I should bring this particular game to your attention, because I was very surprised when I first played it. It is called "Half-life 2", and the entire game is basically a revolution against an Orwellian-style police state. The first game in the series was all about fighting aliens etc, and to a certain extent so is the sequel, but this one is much different. Aliens take a backseat, and a brutal dictatorship takes centre stage.

The very first part of the game is almost identical to 1984 (everyone wearing blue-jumpsuits, being herded around to compact militarised cities, giant electronic billboards of "Big Brother" on every wall, the militaristic police using excessive force at every juncture). I highly recommend that you have a look at it, because it blatantly shows the state in a bad light, and the revolutionaries as heroes.

Something else to note about this game is that it is now considered to be the best game ever made by many people/games critics (and I'm more or less in agreement with that statement myself). This, for me, is a very refreshing sign. A big game, created by a big company, reaching every PC and games console on the planet, with a very potent message.

Here is some material relating to the game that will give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

This is a promotional screenshot from the official website, showing a futuristic militarised police force brutalising the population (this sets the tone for most of the game).

Here is a screenshot, also from the official site, showing one of the compact cities, with the "Citadel" in the background, which is the headquarters of the dictatorship:

There are other towns/cities in the game that are not under the control of the "state", and these are very reminiscent of the proletariat areas of 1984. Poverty-stricken, dilapidated places, in this case crawling with aliens.

The official website is: http://half-life2.com/
An official "Fan Site": http://www.planethalflife.com/half-life2/
Another fan site worth a look: http://www.halflife2.net/

Google it to find more.

I hope this was of interest to you guys. Keep up the good work!
