Ron Paul is front-runner at fundraising BRENDAN McKENNA A zealous band of supporters has helped propel Texas congressman Ron Paul to the front of the Republican presidential pack – at least in fundraising. In the last three months of 2007, his campaign reported raising $19.76 million, which is likely to be more than any of his GOP rivals in that period. But money hasn't translated into support for the small-government, anti-war candidate. He finished fifth in Iowa with 10 percent of the vote – although he did outpoll Rudy Giuliani. Nonetheless, his New Hampshire team is optimistic he'll do better in the libertarian-leaning state than he did in Iowa, where conservative Christians dominated the GOP caucuses.
(Article continues below) "If you run down the list of his positions, they're certainly New Hampshire Republican positions," said Kate Rick, spokeswoman for Dr. Paul's campaign in the state. In advance of Tuesday's primary, the Paul campaign is planning house parties and town hall meetings to reach out to undecided voters. And Barry Goldwater Jr., son of the late 1964 GOP presidential nominee, will campaign with Dr. Paul. Dr. Paul's fundraising success has helped fuel television and radio ads and mailings to voters, including a new ad scheduled to debut this weekend, Ms. Rick said. Patrick Basham, a campaign and election specialist for the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute in Washington, said Dr. Paul "has the potential to do better in New Hampshire, where Republicans are more concerned about taxes and less concerned over social issues." If he can spend his money wisely and do better than the polls and pundits predict in some early states, he could earn another look from Republican voters, Mr. Basham said.
