Ron Paul supporter takes a long walk Joel Marino Kelly Halldorson had a long walk ahead of her, so she traveled light: a good pair of sneakers, bottled water, and a pocket copy of the United States Constitution. Halldorson, 34, a New Hampshire resident, campaigned for Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul on Friday by walking from Boca Raton to Miami, waving a sign with the candidate's name. She tucked the tiny constitution inside her backpack, next to Paul campaign flyers and a few candy bars. "Paul is the guy who stands for civil liberty, for going back to what our founding fathers stood for. I carry this with me to remind me of that," she said. Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas, is one of the candidates running for the Republican presidential nomination. His libertarian views and opposition to the Iraq war have estranged him from more conservative Republicans, but those are exactly the reasons Halldorson says she's voting for him.
(Article continues below) "I don't want anyone meddling in my affairs, and I don't want to meddle in your things either. Ron Paul represents that sense of freedom," a giddy Halldorson said during a break along Fort Lauderdale's beach. "I've never felt this strongly about a candidate before." Sporting a homemade Ron Paul T-shirt, a black hoodie and blue running pants, Halldorson left Boca Raton at 5 a.m. and hoped to reach Miami before 9 p.m. The trip was a last-minute decision. She contacted other Paul supporters earlier in the week and quickly raised more than $400. She wanted this walk to coincide with Thursday's presidential debate in Boca Raton and Tuesday's state primary. "I get people yelling 'Ron Paul rules!' out of their car, and a few others telling me that the Republican party is evil. As long as I get some reaction, I'm fine," Halldorson said. By mid-day, her purple and white sneakers looked worn and dirty; she complained of blisters and backpain. She still refused offers for rides from local supporters, saying that she may still have some walk left in her. "For Paul, I can walk anywhere," she said. "I just have to make sure I bring an extra pair of shoes next time."
