Ron Paul claims he did better job saving social security Mike Aivaz and Muriel Kane When Seattle television reporter Robert Mak interviewed libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul, he wanted to know, "What's your plan to save Social Security?" Paul replied that although he does want to abolish Social Security eventually, he has probably done more than anyone to protect it by voting against other forms of spending. "I offer the chance of all young people to get out and they love the idea," Paul stated. "The people who are dependent on, I would tide them over, but I would save the money elsewhere. Totally we're going to give them their money back -- even though it's all been spent." Paul was referring to the fact that money paid into the Social Security Trust Fund has been taken out by the government for use on other purposes, in exchange for US Treasury securities which will have to be paid back out of general tax revenues as retiring Baby Boomers make greater demands on the fund.
(Article continues below) "If people would have spent money the way I have and voted against all these expenditures, the money would still be there," Paul continued. "I've never voted once to spend any penny. So even though I would like to see a transition and let people assume responsibility for themselves, I probably have voted the best policy in order to protect Social Security."
