Duluth installs 60-80 cameras in each of three high schools

AP | July 4 2006

DULUTH, Minn. - The Duluth school district is installing 60 to 80 surveillance cameras in each of its three high schools over the summer.

Officials say the effort aims at improving security and deterring mischief, such as vandalism.

The new cameras will monitor only public areas: the entrances to locker rooms, bathrooms, gyms and fitness centers. Classrooms won't be taped.

A few surveillance cameras were installed after the 1999 Columbine High School shootings, but school officials say they've been interested in more cameras for a number of years.

The School Board approved almost $200,000 to install and buy the cameras and related equipment at its June 20th meeting.

Students haven't been notified of the change yet.
