Reports show that violence in Iraq is deteriorating with nearly 2000 civilians killed in May, almost a third more than the previous month.

The figures, compiled from the defense, interior and health ministries report that 1,951 civilians died in May -- 30 percent more than in April and close to March's toll.

In recent weeks, violence has returned to Iraqi capital Baghdad with a spate of car bombs and police once more finding corpses of bound and tortured people left in the streets.

It is estimated that over 655000 Iraqi people have been killed in the violence triggered by the US-led invasion of the country in March 2003.
