McCain guardedly optimistic about immigration bill AP Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain said today there is reason to hope that an immigration reform bill will pass. The bill has been revived from what looked like certain death and McCain said he was "guardedly optimistic" it could pass. The bill also backed by President Bush. It would strengthen border security before opening a path to legal status for millions of illegal immigrants already in the country.
The measure appeared dead last week when it failed to reach the Senate floor for a vote. But Senate leaders said yesterday it could come up again as soon as next week. Some elected officials who initially supported the bill were stung by criticism. Senator Saxby Chambliss -- a Georgia Republican -- was booed at his party's state convention when he defended the bill.
