Iran has the right to nuclear technology: Saudi minister

MADRID - Iran has the right to nuclear technology as long as it is used for peaceful purposes, Saudi Defence Minister Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz said in an interview published Wednesday.

"Saudi Arabia reaffirms the importance that throughout the region, including the Gulf, there are no nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction," he told Spain's ABC newspaper.

"But every state has the right to possess nuclear technology for peaceful means," he said, referring to Iran's nuclear programme.

The United States and its European allies fear Iran wants to use the sensitive process of uranium enrichment to make an atomic weapon. The UN Security Council has imposed three sets of sanctions against Tehran over its refusal to suspend enrichment.

But Tehran, OPEC's number two oil producer, insists its drive is entirely peaceful and solely aimed at generating electricity for a growing population whose exploitable hydrocarbon reserves will eventually run out.
