September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed intimidated defendant, says lawyer Alex Spillius Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, al-Qa'eda's third-in-command, was accused by a defence lawyer of bullying a co-defendant into rejecting legal counsel at their trial for murder in relation to the September 11 attacks. Defence lawyers complained after the opening of the historic hearings that Col Ralph Kohlmann, the military judge, had failed to ensure a fair trial when he allowed defendants to talk freely before and during their arraignment. Major Jon Jackson, the lawyer for Mustafa al-Hawsawi, said Mohammed, the self-confessed mastermind of the attacks on the US, had intimidated his client.
(Article continues below) "Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said to my client, 'What are you? US army now?' said Major Jackson. "He glared at my client for a full 20 seconds and he was shaking." Asked why his client had felt intimidated, he said: "Mohammed wants to be in charge, as he has been since he planned this operation – allegedly. "If anyone questions his authority that would show disrespect. But I won't let him do that without a fight." Al-Hawsawi, alleged to have helped the hijackers with money, Western clothing and credit cards, has admitted he knew senior al-Qa'eda figures but denies knowing of the 9/11 attacks in advance.
