Security stepped up on flights into US

Up to six air marshals now accompany every flight from the UK into the US amid fears that terrorists may co-ordinate a series of mid-air explosions.

The increased security protects flights from London's Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester airports, according to US law enforcement officials speaking to ABCNews.com.

The extra marshals were introduced after intelligence reports suggested that al Qa'eda was in the planning a hijacking plot two weeks ago.

Security on all flights out of Germany was increased about two months ago, based on similar intelligence, the officials said.

The federal marshals cancelled training clasees and altered their coverage of domestic American flights to make more marshals available for the expanded coverage.

But a spokesman for the marshal's programme told the website the move had not been "at the expense of protecting US domestic flights".
