NY Post Boost Giuliani, Overlook Ron Paul

On Sunday, The massively popular and influential New York Post ran a nearly two page spread at the front of the paper covering "Rudy's Army, A Granite Wall." Turns out that Giuliani is sending up volunteers, perhaps 30 of them, to knock on doors as part of a canvassing drive in New Hampshire.

The campaign of Ron Paul now has 250 volunteers signed up to visit New Hampshire on behalf of the free-market candidate, and the drive has been underway for months and has two websites related to the cause (see today's related article).

In ordinary reporting, given that Ron Paul stands at 8 percent in New Hampshire, according to mainstream polls, Ron Paul's canvassing drive would likely receive at least a mention alongside Giuliani's effort. Yet it is not even referenced, though the paper does include an article on Fred Thompson visiting a gun show.

The news coverage of the New York Post remains fairly feeble, by most standards, when it comes to Ron Paul. The candidate has come from behind to raise what will be at least $12 million in the 4th quarter of 2007. Up to 1,000 volunteers will be canvassing in New Hampshire for the campaign, and his surge in the opinion polls in New Hampshire is noteworthy as well.

Before the Civil War and the rise of journalism degrees, it was customary for newspapers in America to proclaim their allegiance to a political party or a point of view. The names of newspapers all across the country are indicative of this practice, even though current owners maintain that such papers are now objective. In fact, Free Market News Network was founded along the lines of older-style reporting that admits bias rather than denies it.

The Ron Paul campaign has seemingly brought into question this "objectivity." Mainstream media still does not give the free-market candidacy much ink. The New York Post is an example, but it is not the only one. After the political campaigning is done, will the journalism establishment reflect on the candidacy of Ron Paul and the questions that it has raised about American media coverage?
