A huge backlash in response to the news that Twitter had blocked links to IStandWithPhil.com has forced the social networking giant to lift its censorship of the website.

IStandWithPhil.com is calling for the reinstatement of Phil Robertson after his controversial comments on homosexuality and features a petition which has been signed by over 200,000 people.

Yesterday it emerged that Twitter was flagging links to IStandWithPhil.com by treating them as malware, despite the fact that the #IStandWithPhil hashtag has been trending for days. When users attempted to post the link, they were met with a pop up box which read, “There was an error posting your message.”

Shortly after being flooded with complaints about the block, Twitter fixed the problem and claimed that it was merely a technical error.

“The URL IStandWithPhil.com was mistakenly flagged as spam tonight, by an outside organization that tracks spam sources. We have restored access and apologize for the error,” Twitter told Marketing Land, in an emailed statement.

While Twitter has responded to the backlash by restoring links to IStandWithPhil.com, there’s no sign of A&E lifting its suspension of Phil Robertson despite innumerable prominent politicians, celebrities and gay social critics expressing support for Robertson’s free speech rights.

As we highlighted yesterday, gay authors Tammy Bruce and Camille Paglia have both slammed the gay community and leftist media outlets for using the very same kind of bullying tactics they would usually abhor in pursuit of what Paglia described as an intolerant and “Stalinist” attack on free speech.

Numerous Twitter users noted that the block on IStandWithPhil.com had been lifted this morning.
