Barak: Israel in ‘all-out war’ with Hamas

Israel is now in “all-out war” with Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza, Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel’s parliament Monday.
“We have stretched our hand in peace many times to the Palestinian people. We have nothing against the people of Gaza,” Barak said as Israeli warplanes carried out a third day of strikes on the Palestinian territory.
“But this is an all-out war against Hamas and its branches. The restraint that we have demonstrated is the source of our strength when it is time to fight.”
The Palestinian death toll from the campaign has topped 300, most of them Hamas militants, Palestinian medical sources said Monday. Columns of smoke could be seen over Gaza City, while Israeli tanks cruised along the edges of the territory.

Iyad Nasr, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said the streets of Gaza were largely empty while airstrikes continued throughout the morning.
“Very little number of cars are going out,” he said. “People who need to secure some basic food supplies are all to go out, or people looking for a family member who is missing or going to a hospital.”

PRESSURE MOUNTS OVER GAZA ATTACKS
Defence Minister Ehud Barak declared on Monday that Israel was in an “all-out war against Hamas” as the Jewish state continued its massive bombardment of the Islamists’ targets in Gaza.
“We have nothing against Gaza residents, but we are engaged in an all-out war against Hamas and its proxies,” he said.
Meanwhile, the international community has piled pressure on Israel to halt its offensive in the Gaza Strip, as raids on the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas entered their third day.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon added his voice to the 15-member Security Council’s call for an immediate end to
hostilities and urged Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the poverty-stricken territory.
“He deplores that violence is continuing today, and he strongly urges once again an immediate stop to all acts of violence,” which has already left more than 300 people dead, his spokeswoman Michele Montas said in a statement.
The Security Council earlier issued a non-binding statement calling for “an immediate halt to all violence” in the Gaza Strip and urged the parties “to stop immediately all military activities”.
China weighs in
As Israeli air strikes continued and with tanks massed on the border for a possible land offensive, China called for a halt to the military operation.
“The Chinese side is shocked and seriously concerned over the current military operations in Gaza that have caused a large number of deaths and injuries,” Vice Premier Li Keqiang said in a statement.
He called on the Israelis and Hamas to work towards peace, saying both sides “need to resolve differences through dialogue”.
Demonstrators in cities around the world marched on Sunday in protest against the air strikes, which have wounded more than 600 people.
The largest single protest of about 8,000 people took place in Egypt in the southern city of Assiut, while rallies in the capital Cairo and the port city of Alexandria drew around 4,000 each.
Nasrallah calls for action
Lebanese Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah urged Egyptians to take to the streets in their “millions” to force their government to open the country’s border with Gaza and help save Palestinians from the bombardments.
In Turkey, thousands of people joined demonstrations in about a dozen cities, while in Syria, protesters burned Israeli and American flags as thousands demonstrated in central Damascus.
There were similar scenes in the Jordanian capital Amman, where hundreds of people led by Islamist lawmakers gathered to demand the closure of the Israeli embassy.
With Egypt, Jordan is one of only two Arab governments to have signed peace treaties with Israel.
In Europe, British police made 10 arrests as a demonstration outside the Israeli embassy in London turned violent.
Danish police arrested a man on the fringes of a march in Copenhagen after he threw a petrol bomb at officers.
Protest rallies were also held in Paris and Madrid.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband called for an “urgent ceasefire and immediate halt to all violence”.
Lavrov speaks to Livni
A call to “urgently halt” the military action also came from Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who spoke to his Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni.
Japan, a leading donor to the Middle East peace process, expressed its deep concern, urging both sides to immediately stop the use of force to avoid a further escalation, Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone said in a statement.
The top diplomats in Italy and Spain, Franco Frattini and Miguel Angel Moratinos, also spoke by telephone with Livni, who said Israel would try “to limit the suffering of the people of Gaza”, the Italian foreign ministry said.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country currently holds the European Union presidency, told Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas by telephone of his grave concerns about the escalating violence.
Pope Benedict XVI urged everyone involved in the “tragic situation in the Middle East” to strive for humanity and wisdom.
Canada also appealed for a halt to violence, while mostly Muslim Malaysia accused Israel of using “disproportionate” force and Pakistan condemned the air attacks as “counterproductive”.
Obama ‘committed to peace’
A top aide to Barack Obama said the US president-elect was committed to achieving peace in the Middle East.
Recognising the special relationship between the United States and Israel, Obama would work closely with the Israelis, David Axelrod said in an interview on CBS television.
“But he will do so in a way that will promote the cause of peace, and work closely with the Israelis and the Palestinians on that – toward that objective,” said Axelrod.

ISRAEL AT WAR TO BIITER END, STRIKES KEY HAMAS SITES
Israel’s defense minister said Monday the country is engaged in a “war to the bitter end” against Hamas in the Gaza Strip and said the military operation against the terror group would continue and intensify.
“We have stretched our hand in peace many times to the Palestinian people. We have nothing against the people of Gaza,” Ehud Barak said to a special session of parliament. “But this is an all-out war against Hamas and its branches. The restraint that we have demonstrated is the source of our strength when it is time to fight.”
Israel’s air force obliterated symbols of Hamas power on the third day of its overwhelming Gaza assault, striking a house next to the Hamas premier’s home, devastating a security compound and flattening a five-story building at a university closely linked to the Islamic terror group.
Israel declared areas around the Gaza Strip a “closed military zone,” citing the risk from retaliatory Palestinian rocket fire.
The closure could also help Israel mount a surprise ground assault, should it be ordered. A military spokesman told Reuters the new policy meant that civilians, including journalists, may be barred from a buffer zone of 1 to 2 miles from Gaza.
A Hamas police spokesman, Ehab Ghussein, said 180 members of the Hamas security forces were among the dead. The United Nations agency in charge of Palestinian refugees said at least 51 of the dead were civilians. The three-day death toll rose to 320, including seven children under the age of 15 who were killed in two separate strikes late Sunday and Monday, medics said.
Israel launched the deadliest attack against Palestinians in decades on Saturday in retaliation for rocket fire aimed at civilians in southern Israeli towns.
The strikes appear to have gravely damaged Hamas’ ability to launch rockets, but one medium-range rocket fired at the Israeli city of Ashkelon killed a man there Monday and wounded several others. It was the second fatality in Israel since the beginning of the offensive, and the first person ever to be killed by a rocket in Ashkelon, a city of 120,000.
On Sunday, Hamas missiles struck for the first time near the city of Ashdod, twice as far from Gaza as Ashkelon and only 25 miles from Israel’s heart in Tel Aviv.
At first light Monday, strong winds blew black smoke from the bombed sites in Gaza City over deserted streets. The air hummed with the buzz of pilotless drones and the roar of jets, punctuated by the explosions of new airstrikes.
Most of those killed since Saturday were members of Hamas security forces, though the precise numbers remain unclear. The U.N. agency in charge of Palestinian refugees said at least 51 of the dead were civilians. A rise in civilian casualties could intensify international pressure on Israel to abort the offensive.
A group of Iranian hardline clerics volunteered to fight in the Gaza Strip in response to Israel’s air strikes, the Fars news agency reported on Monday.
“From Monday the Combatant Clergy Society has activated its web site for a week to register volunteers to fight against the Zionist regime (Israel) in either the military, financial or propaganda fields,” the semi-official news agency said.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a religious decree to Muslims around the world on Sunday, ordering them to defend Palestinians in Gaza against Israeli attacks “in any way possible”.
A militant Muslim group called the Islamic Defenders’ Front in Indonesia said it plans to recruit as many as 1,000 volunteers to fight in the Gaza Strip in response to the Israeli air strikes.
Indonesia’s government joined in international condemnation of the attacks on the Gaza Strip, while more than 1,000 people rallied in central Jakarta to protest against the air strikes.
Hamas, whose charter specifically calls for the destruction of the state of Israel, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdon and the European Union and is banned in Jordan.
From 2000 to 2004, Hamas was responsible for killing nearly 400 Israelis and wounding more than 2,000 in 425 attacks, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 2001 through May 2008, Hamas launched more than 3,000 Qassam rockets and 2,500 mortar attacks against Israeli targets.
Israel’s intense bombings — more than 300 air strikes since midday Saturday — wreaked unprecedented destruction in Gaza, reducing buildings to rubble.
One strike destroyed a five-story building in the women’s wing at Islamic University, one of the most prominent Hamas symbols. Another attack ravaged a compound controlled by Preventive Security, one of the group’s chief security arms, and a third destroyed a house next to the residence of Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister. Like other Hamas leaders, Haniyeh is in hiding.
Late Sunday, Israeli aircraft attacked a building in the Jebaliya refugee camp next to Gaza City, killing a woman, a toddler and three young teenage girls, Gaza Health Ministry official Dr. Moaiya Hassanain said.
In the southern town of Rafah, a toddler and his two teenage brothers were killed in an airstrike aimed at a Hamas commander, Hassanain said. In Gaza City, another attack killed a man and his wife.
Shlomo Brom, a former senior Israeli military official, said it was the deadliest force ever used in decades of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.
In the most dramatic attacks Sunday, warplanes struck dozens of smuggling tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border, cutting off a lifeline that had supplied Hamas with weapons and Gaza with commercial goods. The influx of goods helped Hamas defy an 18-month blockade of Gaza by Israel and Egypt, and was key to propping up its rule.
Gaza’s nine hospitals were overwhelmed. Hassanain, who keeps a record for the Gaza Health Ministry, said over 1,400 were wounded over two days of fighting, and that casualties were now being taken to private clinics and even homes.
Abdel Hafez, a 55-year-old history teacher, waited outside a Gaza City bakery to buy bread, one of the few people visible outdoors. He said he was not a Hamas supporter, but believed the strikes would only increase support for the group. “Each strike, each drop of blood are giving Hamas more fuel to continue,” he said.
In Jerusalem, Israel’s Cabinet approved a call-up of 6,500 reserve soldiers Sunday in apparent preparation for a ground offensive. The final decision to call up more reserves has yet to be made by the defense minister, Ehud Barak, and the Cabinet decision could be a pressure tactic.
Israel has doubled the number of troops on the Gaza border since Saturday and also deployed an artillery battery. Several hundred reservists have already been summoned to join their units, but no full combat formations have been mobilized so far.
Israeli leaders have said the operation might be long. “The goal of our current operation is to … create a situation where Israeli civilians living in the south of the country no longer have to live in constant fear of a Hamas rocket attack,” government spokesman Mark Regev said Monday.
Since Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 after a 38-year military occupation, Israeli forces have repeatedly returned to the territory to hunt militants firing rockets at Israeli towns. But it has shied away from retaking the entire strip for fear of getting bogged down in urban warfare.
Military experts said Israel would need at least 10,000 soldiers for a full-scale invasion.
The assault has sparked diplomatic fallout. Syria decided to suspend indirect peace talks with Israel, begun earlier this year. The U.N. Security Council called on both sides to halt the fighting and asked Israel to allow humanitarian supplies into Gaza. Raed Fattouh, a Gaza border official, said Israel informed him that two key crossings would be open Monday to allow in fuel and aid supplies.
The prime minister of Turkey, one of the few Muslim countries to have relations with Israel, called the air assault a “crime against humanity,” and French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned “the provocations that led to this situation as well as the disproportionate use of force.”
The carnage inflamed Arab and Muslim public opinion, setting off street protests in Arab communities in Israel and the West Bank, across the Arab world, and in some European cities.
Some of the protests turned violent. Israeli troops quelling a West Bank march Sunday killed one Palestinian and seriously wounded another.
On Monday, a Palestinian stabbed and wounded four Israelis in a West Bank settlement before he was shot and wounded. It was not immediately clear if the attack was directly connected to the events in Gaza.

18Lehaim – In answer to your question, if militants in Canada launched rocket attacks at the USA, then the US bombed the schools and residential areas they were hiding in – then I would go to the US embassy in London to protest, in much the same way I will stand and be counted outside the Israeli embassy today. Hamas are terrorists, but Israel is committing war crimes. If Israel seeks peace, why employ tactics that have already directly caused the death of an inhabitant of Ashkelon? No wonder the people of the world are so disgusted. The worst day’s slaughter in 40 – 60 years in Gaza, virtually unprovoked, especially given that the people of Gaza have suffered far more from the crimes of the israeli government than the people of southern Israel have suffered from the ‘rocket’ attacks.
Gaza has been under siege all through the ceasefire by the criminal Israeli government and hundreds of Gazans have died as a result. The entire population has gone without proper electricity, food supplies, medicines, a people reduced to the brink of starvation at the hands of a criminal murderous regime in israel that has systematically brainwashed its citizens into going along with and often applauding these terrible crimes.
In 3 years, 5000 rockets have been fired by Hamas and killed 16 people, yet in 3 days 400 missiles/bombs have been fired by Israel, killing 320 people and wounding nearly 1500, I ask you, who is the terrorist organisation??

It was prior to 1917 that GBR added Palestine (the name of the place) to it’s extensive list of “COLONIES” but in 1917 the British “GAVE” PALESTINE to the JEWS. Soon after 100’s of 1000’s of Jews began arriving in that country and OVER RAN the place. And that clause was to clearly understand that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religous rights of exsiting non Jewish communites in Palastine. So it sounds like there not obying by this clause. So what there really doing is much worse than the apartheid in South Africa. What there doing is killing people in the name Zionism. Israel is great at attacking barely armed people with tanks, helicopters and and jets. They do seem to be Satan’s chosen people to mislead people into believing that arrogant greed is good, and religion is bad while most of Israel’s military is “secular”. At least being “secular” is far more honest better than claiming to be religious, even though rabbis are trying to make inroads in the military administration.
As a Christian I do not believe that we share the same God as present day Israel or Judaism. If more so-called Christians would read their Bible themselves instead of letting Zionist idiots like John Hagee lead them down a path of lies and deceitful interpretations, Christians might be able to change the course of America back to a great nation instead of a looted “junkyard”.

I am sad to say that i do not have enough information on this whole thing to actually know who is right and wrong. I have no Palestinian friends in the region, but I do have Jewish friends who fall squarely on the side of Israel, of course. I am feeling the need to read about this in depth and to find out as much as I can, so that my comments do not inflame either side. I know that what we don’t need is more fanning of these flames of war.

The Egyptian president agrees with Israel’s attack on Gaza, saying that not only was it Hamas that provoked Israel, but Hamas is the true obstacle to peace in the region. Even the Egyptian Foreign Minister stated that he was frustrated because it is actually HAMAS that is blocking aid from Egypt from getting to the Palestinian people. But of course, this is not broadcast in the media. It is unfortunate because even the Arab countries who truly support peace efforts, Egypt and Jordan, are being chastised in the Arab world for speaking out against Hamas, and Radical Islam. There can be no peace with terrorist organizations such Hamas, Hizbullah in Syria and Lebanon, or the Arab countries such as Iran and Syria, because they cannot stand even the existance of Israel in the region–and they are inciting violence, a call to jihad, to all the radicals/extremists-shaids– in the Muslim world against Israel. Meanwhile, Iran with the help of the Russians, are working tirelessly to create a nuke, so that they can use it on Israel, asap. This would cause the 2nd Holocaust. Ahmadinejad has stated on several occasions that this was his goal, his mission in life, and this is what the muslim world is waiting for. No other religion except Radical Islam has incited so much violence in the modern world. From suicide bombings, to jihad, to violent protests against cartoons, books written about Mohammed. The term ” The Jews are God’s chosen people ” is true in history. God did use them at a crucial time in Egypt, or should I say Moses. but because they didn’t recognise the messiah( Luk 19:44 ).Their kingdom was taken from them and they have been trying to get it back ever since without Jesus Christ.

What is happening now in Israel is sad but IMO, most of what is being posted here now is deplorable! Much is profane (i.e. #36) while other postings show a lack of true understanding of the Scriptures (i.e. #’s 29, 38) and history of the Middle East (i.e. #32). Some of you express a little wisdom (i.e. #’s 23, 34) and get attacked! The Vatican is really behind false teaching and false names of people like those called “Palestinians”. (There never was a people there called by that name until after 1948!) When Mark Twain toured the Holy Land in the 1800’s, it was BARREN and forsaken! I strongly agree with you regarding “the Pope (Man of Sin)” Though I was under the belief that The United states was the beast, not the vatican. Still i am not here to debate that.
Yet i would really appreciate if you could please provide info or links to a site that shows “Islam (the False Prophet of the book of Revelation)” I have studied long and hard and would like to see details of this as i simply can not understand how this conclusion is reached.

Simon, the U.S. Government is “the two horned beast” of Revelation 13:11-18 as I stated in my previous post. This I learned from reading the book, “The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan” by Ellen G. White who wrote it in 1888. It is destributed by The Seventh Day Adventist Church but can easily be bought on line (new or used). In fact, I purchased a 1913 edition not long ago for a few dollars. In this book there is an entire chapter about “The Aims of the Papacy”. In it there is a lot of interesting history of the true Bible believers.
From other readings I learned that young Mohammad was tutured by agents of the Vatican who wanted a religion to seduce the Arab peoples. (Ex Jesuit priest Allberto Rivera) His writings can be found on the Web. By the way, he also wrote that the “cross” symbol is “a magnet for evil”. In the Greek translation for #666 (Revelation 13:18) it’s also “The Mark of the Beast”. By the grace of Yahweh, I have been teaching this since 1973.

In many ways ~ yes especially concerning prophecies about The Second Coming and Millenium. However, I am not a current member as that church still honors the pagan names of deity and still only officially keeps the Seventh Day Sabbath ignoring the rest of Yahweh’s calendar, Leviticus 23. It seems to me that that church is stuck back in 1915 when Ellen G. White passed away at the age of 85. Incidently, she did not ever write anything about the re-birth of Israel, seeing no future for it after 70 A.D.

Re the ‘chosen people’. Abraham was chosen by God and God said the earth would be blessed through Israel. I find it fascinating that the Jewish people are still on the cutting edge in this world both negatively (Karl Marx) and positively be it in medicine, the movie industry, finances, philanthropy, the arts, music, fashions. Also bearing this out is the fact that most of the Nobel Prize winners are Jewish.
In the short period of time that Israel has existed compared to the Arab nations in the Middle East, it has managed to become a force to be reckonned with on the global economic market as well as for its military. Israel’s military has, under contract, trained other countries’ military. How did they advance so quickly? They have the most sophisticated security measures in place through ‘using their heads’, their keen minds. I don’t believe God has removed His hand from them. The maxim “He who blesses the Jew will be blessed and he who curses the Jew will be cursed” is still in place today. Yes, I wish they would accept the Jesus as Messiah but that’s up to God.
The Arabs have so much wealth/oil at their disposal. What have they done with their wealth? Built 57 palaces?? Why are they still poor and fighting? They are constantly fighting each other – Iran vs. Iraq, Kuwait, Yemen, Saudi Arabia. Even WITHOUT Israel in the Middle East, there’d still be conflict.
I agree with one of the previous bloggers who observes that the Muslim world is out to take over all non-Muslim countries. They immigrate to foreign countries not to integrate but rather to change that country into a Muslim country via Sharia law, etc. It behooves the whole world to be on alert re Muslim terrorists who stoop to sacrifice their own offspring as terrorists and suicide bombers.
Someone observed that there MIGHT be peace in the Middle East if the Arabs could learn to love their children more than they hate the Jews.
