BART cop shooting protests escalate, turn violent

Angry protests turned to rioting Wednesday night in response to the January 1st shooting of an unarmed man at a subway station in California’s Bay Area. Police made over 100 arrests, after cars were vandalized, store windows were smashed, and fires blazed out of control on the streets.
RAW STORY first reported the shooting of Oscar Grant, 22, who was killed by a single gun shot to the back after being pulled from a train along with some friends amid reports of an altercation on Monday, Jan. 5. Johannes Mehserle has been identified as the officer who is alleged to have fired the fatal shot, and has resigned amid alleged death threats.
The attorney for the family of Grant, John Burris, said the timing of the officer’s resignation didn’t surprise him.
“He doesn’t want to give a statement because BART could’ve ordered him to do so, and if he didn’t, he could be terminated.”
Wednesday night, the streets turned into West Beirut after protesters left the station area.

NBC’s Bay Area News reports, “The protest Wednesday began peacefully at the Fruitvale Bay Area Rapid Transit station, but forced the closure of that station from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. before protesters moved through the city. At one point, reporter George Kiriyama was hit in the arm by a tear gas can. He explained live on television, ‘I’ve been hit. I’ve been hit.’ Kiriyama suffered a bruise to his arm.”
One of the protest’s organizers, Evan Shamar, blamed others for stirring things up.
“He said a group of anarchists, who were not part of the organizations hosting the rally, smashed a police vehicle before setting a garbage can on fire,” the NBC affiliate reported.

I learned about the riots yesterday via this site. no mention on news this am. only small note on fox website. Why haven’t they arrested this cop? If they look at the video that’s enough to arrest him and hold him. if they don’t the riots will get worse. Is this the beginning of total rebellion against the police state?

I rode the BART last night on the way to the Warriors game about 7PM – the overhead speaker said that the Lake Merritt exit was closed due to “civil protest”
As I passed the Fruitvale exit on the way to the coliseum I could see where Oscar Grant had been murdered. I could literally feel Oscar Grant’s soul screaming out for justice – but it was life as usual for the sports loving crowd.
Most people going to the game had no idea what had happened, but I did hear a comment from a guy with his buddies drinking a beer in a paper bag – “yeah, he was a thug. they were fighting and the cop took him out”.
I felt like asking the BART police how they could shoot someone in the back in cold blood? But I knew that the convo would have escalated and my freedom would be in jeopardy, so I remained quiet like a good slave.
Whatever violence against small businesses or vehicles was staged and provacateured. Just like the comments on this message board.
Rest in Peace Oscar Grant – your murder WILL NOT go unpunished.

It amazes me how much outrage people express everytime a Cop makes yet another tragic “MISTAKE” and blows someone away or Tasers them to death – you’ll recall the taser death at Vancouver International Airport by so-called “Highly Trained” Airport Security.
You all need to keep in mind the Mentallity of individuals who choose this “JOB” in the first place. They are the type that were sadistic bullies all their lives – they get there kicks from having all this new-found power and control over people. You must realize the average cop has an IQ equal to his or her shoesize, because only a complete moron would want the job in the first place. The old days of “To Serve and Protect” are long gone. Today it’s all about intimidation and control. Cops choose this career because they are morons unable to think for themselves – they need a superior telling them how to think and act.

I bet some disguised protesters are from SJSU, SCU, and other universities. I became the gang stalking victim in San Jose, CA. And I learned pretty much of their size.
Cops at SJSU can send students to mental hospital for “beliving them to be sucidal or harmful to others” while the students deny what cops say.

I saw the video of the incident. I’m sure that it has vanished by now. It looked to me like the cop intended to taser the guy… but… oops… wrong holster. After sending his victim to the promised land, the public servant stepped back and held his head like he didn’t mean to do it. Soooooo sowwwy Mr. government victim!

Cops are not murderers. This cop obviously overreacted in a stressful situation.
He made a grave mistake. There is more to this than meets the eye.
FUCK THE COPS is NOT an appropriate reaction.
Cops are US, they are people just like us, thrust into often dangerous and stressfull situations, to protect the citizenry from the outrageous actions of those among us that do not respect the rights of others.
Remember that these cops were reacting to a situation that had gotten out of control. Their stress levels were very high. This cop f#ck’d up and will have to answer for his actions.
Personally, I feel sorry for him and his family, as well as for Mr Grant and his family.
This is a tragedy all around.
Remember that this would never have happened if the people in this train station had acted like civilized human beings.

The police are hired to be a show of force – a visible message that you must obey your government or else. The police are not subject to the law because they enforce the law.
Your government arms men and women that are often incompetent with a firearm, inadequately trained for violent situations and given asinine procedures to follow – such as covering a prone suspect with a gun while another officer cuffs him.
You support your governments when you vote, when you pay taxes, when you use legal tender and when you accept government handouts.

The quality of reporting on this site cannot be faulted. For me, Paul Watson is up there with the most accomplished media commentators. You can’t doubt the research, and the delivery is articulate and convincing. The guy deserves more exposure. Here’s hoping – and expecting!
THE point it is, it’s very difficult to recommend this site to family/friends/colleagues/acquaintances. The subject matter is unpalatable for most honest hard working folk. It’s not a fair assumption to label this group as “asleep’. They are mostly honest law abiding caring active members of their communities. Nothing wrong with that. We depend on them in the civilised world.
They simply won’t be “woken up” by the barrage of mindless aggression and blinkered comments contributed by the growing herd of trolls. They switch off. I can’t blame them. It’s a conspiracy, after all.
The answer is to shut down the comment form. Direct all discussion to the more civilised forums of PrisonPlanet. We have to attract the main stream and lose all the fringe distractors. Until we can achieve that, we will always be labeled as conspiracy nuts.

When the cops start shooting unarmed civilians in the back with their sidearm, it’s time for Americans to start shooting back. The biggest myth on this planet is the value of “non-violent protest”. Even if the cop thought he was reaching for his Tazer – what makes everyone think that shooting a citizen with a Tazer is okay? It’s a form of torture, which we are supposed to be protected from by the Constitution (cruel and unusual punishment). As we all know, Tazers can be just as deadly (and a lot more painful) as a gunshot wound. I am completely distraught over this incident.

This is very sad. I used to be an MP. Fortunately, I never had to use the weapon. I got out because I was to nice, treated people with respect, and tried to talk before any violence was needed, and believe it or not it really WORKED, I was well liked. The department made me get out because I was respectful and nice ( no bullshit). There are very few occasions where you are fired upon, but it goes back to the ATTITUDE of the cops. They are cocky, think they are above the law etc. Obviously, not all cops are like this, but there seems to be way too many now a days. The system is designed for us to fight us so “they” have control (Divide & Conquer). Wake-Up you dumb asses.This video is clear. This is wrong and the cop should be put to jail. This is happening WAY to often . I did believe in diplomacy first. Everything has failed, I believe that now this is going to get ugly because NOTHING else is working. What if this young man was your son,relative, loved one etc. would you supporters of this cop fell the same way or since it happened to you, or would it be different. This is the problem with everything, it has to directly happen to you before you will do something about it, or voice your opinion etc.. I am white and this is WRONG. African-Americans are treated wrong and I don’t see how anyone else doesn’t see this. Maybe this is why they are starting to shoot at cops, do you blame them. Again, put yourself in their shoes. Change the training, attitude, system, and maybe we can get along. Maybe there would be less violence. Again if the system,training etc. was designed to benefit all of us “they” would lose control , and that’s why the brainwashing/mind control training continues. Obama’s failure to submit evidence of his constitutional qualification for the 1/9/09 conference will mean he cannot thereafter challenge Berg’s request to enjoin the 1/8/09 Congressional electoral count and certification, albeit retroactive, scheduled for SCOTUS conference 1/16/09. Moreover, Chief Justice Roberts has scheduled a full Court conference on the Lightfoot case 1/23/09 in the event there needs to be a Constitutionally mandated action, the Inauguration itself, to enjoin retroactively.

I was on the train at the station the same time as the shooting took place. From what I saw live and later saw on the unclear recordings, the cop made a big mistake, but it definitely appeared to be a mistake. Guns do go off accidentally, it happens all the time, even by trained professionals. I’m sure if he wanted this guy dead, he could have done it a hundred other ways instead of being in front of about 500 witnesses. What many of you don’t realize is that Oakland totally sucks and the people here look for any reason to riot and break shit. When the Raiders lost to the Bucs in the superbowl they did an even bigger riot, and what poor losers the whole town looked like. It’s funny how one scumbag gets shot by a cop and they protest and riot, but when scumbags shoot each other on a daily basis here, no one riots or gets upset at all.

That man did NOT need to be tasered in the first place. He was fully under police control, and was
not a continuintg eminent threat to the police. He was face down on the ground with an officer’s knee to the back of his neck. He was unable to defend himself in that position. He was NOT convicted of any crime by a court of law, and was therefore innocent. The police are trying to justify the cold blooded murder of an innocent man. If this cop is not made an example of by harsh sentencing, then there should be roits all over the country. This bullshit has to stop. Suspect killed in arrest attempt

A recently released convict with a lengthy record of felonies was shot and killed by Kennewick police officers
Thursday morning after he reportedly tried to run over an officer.
Andrew Lee Shane, 27, was apparently shot in the neck and head and died at the scene in a cul de sac on the
3700 block of West 15th Avenue in south Kennewick. Police said Shane, who had no current listed address, had
an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to see his probation officer.
Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg said during an afternoon news conference that the officers “reacted to
an incident that was really dictated by the suspect.”
“All reports are that the officers fired at the suspect after he tried to run them over,” he said.
The incident began at about 8:30 a.m., when police received a report of a suspicious person on West 15th
Avenue, a dead-end road in a middle-class neighborhood of duplexes and homes. According to a 911 record
typed by dispatchers, the caller told police an unidentified man was taking water from a faucet at a vacant duplex
and washing a turquoise Ford Thunderbird.
The caller also said pillows and blankets were visible when the man opened his trunk, but it was unclear if he had
been sleeping in the duplex, which has been unoccupied for months.
Hohenberg said Officer Chris Bennett arrived within 10 minutes of the call but decided to wait for backup before
confronting the suspect. Officers Juan Dorame and Kenny Melone arrived simultaneously about a minute later.
After blocking the cul de sac with their cars, the officers approached Shane, who had locked himself in the car.
A 911 report from the officers indicated Bennett and Melone fired at Shane after he attempted to run Melone
over with the car. Dorame did not shoot, Hohenberg said. It was unclear how many rounds were fired by the two
officers, who carry Glock 22s, a .40-caliber pistol that holds 15 rounds.
Mike Schmidt, who lives in a duplex adjacent to the scene, said he was on the computer when he heard the shots
but thought the noise was made by a nearby work crew. It was only after he saw police cars that he realized he’d
heard gunshots.
“I thought I heard five shots,” Schmidt said, standing astride yellow police tape that roped off the street to his
duplex. “We’ve lived here four years and it’s a pretty peaceful neighborhood.”
Vincent Leffler, of Spokane, was part of a work crew digging to replace electric cable for the Benton PUD and was
just a few hundred feet from the shooting.
He said his view of the incident was blocked but he heard it.
“(The officers) were yelling at him the whole time,” Leffler said. “They were telling him to get out of the car and,
‘Put your hands up!’”
Leffler said the entire incident occurred in a few minutes. When the crew went to see what had happened, he
said, he saw a 1990s Ford Thunderbird with its back windshield blown out and several bullet holes near the
driver’s side door.
Leffler said he also saw the officers drag the man out of the car and give him first aid until paramedics arrived.

Officers discovered later that Shane had a warrant for his arrest for failing to report to a probation officer in Pasco. He had nine
felonies on his Washington record, including convictions for two robberies, two assaults, theft and forgery. He also had six
felonies from other states and was released from prison in August, police said.
According to court records, Shane was scheduled for trial in Benton County Superior Court Jan. 23 on charges of possession
of methamphetamine and second-degree attempted vehicle prowl. He also was scheduled for a court date next Thursday for
failing to pay fines on 2004 charges of attempting to elude, 2001 charges of third-degree assault, possession of cocaine and hit
and run, a 1999 charge of first-degree theft and a 1997 forgery charge.
Kennewick police spokesman Sgt. Ken Lattin said the officers involved in the shooting were immediately taken to department
headquarters to receive assistance from the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team. All three have been placed on paid
administrative leave while the shooting is investigated by the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.
Bennett was hired by Kennewick police in January 2004. Melone has been with the department since November 2003 and
Dorame was hired in July 2002.
Hohenberg expressed confidence in his officers and said based on the information he had, he believed they acted properly. He
said police had interviewed seven witnesses who confirmed officers fired after Shane’s car appeared to be heading toward one
officer.
“When confronted with a deadly threat, it doesn’t matter if it’s a gun or a knife,” Hohenberg said. “In this case, it was a
3,500-pound deadly weapon.
“These officers were in danger,” he said.
At the scene Thursday morning, Benton County Sheriff Larry Taylor said Kennewick police had asked his deputies to
investigate the incident. It’s standard practice to have a separate agency investigate a shooting in which police are involved. The
Kennewick department also will conduct an internal investigation.
The fatal shooting was the first in Kennewick since 1982, when Taylor, then a Benton County sheriff’s deputy, shot and killed a
26-year-old woman involved in an armed robbery. The last shooting that involved an officer in Kennewick was in October 2003
at the Money Tree, but no one was injured.

Fatal shooting justified, sheriff says

Benton County Sheriff Larry Taylor said Tuesday that two Kennewick police officers were justified in using deadly
force when they shot and killed a 27-year-old man before he could run over one of the officers.
Andrew Shane was high on a cocktail of illegal drugs the morning of Jan. 5, according to a toxicology report that
found methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana in his blood.
The repeated felon reportedly had told his newlywed wife and family during the weeks leading up to the shooting
that he wasn’t going back to jail and that police would have to shoot him, according to the report.
That included a cell phone conversation with his wife just seconds before his death, Taylor said during a Tuesday
news conference.
Shane ignored repeated orders by the officers, say witnesses, and instead locked himself in his blue
Thunderbird, turned on the car, put it into reverse and began driving rapidly toward Kennewick Officer Kenny
Melone.
Believing he was about to be run over by Shane, Melone began to fire his gun at Shane, Taylor said.
At the same time, Kennewick Officer Chris Bennett, who was standing outside Shane’s driver-side door, also
began shooting at Shane, Taylor said.
“In a matter of only a few seconds, the shooting stopped, as well as the threat of being run over,” Taylor said.
“My conclusion is that the officers had no other options left to them,” he said.
Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller agreed with Taylor’s findings that the officers did not break any laws.
Kennewick Police Chief Ken Hohenberg said an internal investigation also concluded the officers, including a
third officer, John Dorame, had acted properly.
All of the officers have since returned to duty.
A statement from Shane’s family said they were withholding any judgment on the investigation or the shooting
until they complete their own investigation.
The family has hired Kennewick attorney Salvador Mendoza to represent them.
“We have a number of concerns, including whether the police acted negligently by using deadly force and wish
to investigate before making any final decisions,” the statement reads.
Mendoza expects to have the family’s independent investigation completed within a month.
The family is seeking any witnesses who may have something new to add. Anyone with information is asked to
call Mendoza at 374-1554. Witnesses also can call sheriff’s detectives at 628-0333.
In an interview with the Herald after the shooting, Shane’s wife, Julie, described her husband of six weeks as “a
lost soul.”
She said he recently had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and hoped treatment would help him give up

methamphetamine for good.
Detectives found 25 shell casings after the shooting. Bennett fired 11 shots and Melone fired 14 shots. The officers carry Glock
22s, a .40-caliber pistol that holds 16 rounds, including one in the chamber.
Benton County Coroner Floyd Johnson said an autopsy the day after the shooting showed Shane had been shot 15 times, four
of which were lethal.
Two of those shots, one to the head and another in the spine close to the head, would have stopped Shane in his tracks,
Johnson said.
However, he said, there is no way to know when in the sequence those two shots were fired.
The incident began at 8:40 a.m., when police received a report of a suspicious person on West 15th Avenue.
On their way to the house, officers were told the man was suspected to be Shane, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for
failing to see his probation officer and who had been flagged for being violent with police.

Shane was sitting half in the car with his feet outside the passenger door when police arrived. He was holding a utility knife that
he refused to drop, Taylor said.
Shane then pulled himself inside the car and locked the doors and slid to the driver’s side, Taylor said.
All the while, the three officers were yelling to Shane to surrender. Instead, Shane lowered the driver’s window about 2 inches
and reportedly asked the officers, “Do you guys want a high-speed chase?”
Dorame then went back to his patrol car and blocked the street. Melone had moved to stand behind the car. Bennett was on the
driver’s side. When Shane started the car, Bennett unsuccessfully attempted to smash the window and stop him.
Shane then put the car into reverse.
It was over in less than three minutes after police arrived.
“This is a tragic event that has occurred,” Taylor said. “There is pain and suffering from friends and relatives of Andrew’s for their
loss. But do not forget about the pain and suffering of these fine officers and their families.”

why does everybody insist that every group who yells a little louder and dosent have cameras in their face giving thank yous and mellow (nonincindiary) speeches about solidarity, are anarchists, I want limited constitutional based government, and removal of this sess system of fear and violence for all brothers and sisters of humanity, but I am fucking pissed, every day my nuckles get tighter and tighter every day another Oscar Grant, does anybody remember the boston massacre……its time to yell and kick and scream and slap the shit out of some authority, its like a abused pittbull, sometimes a baseballbat is what is best for it when it turns on you and threatens your family.
