LOS ANGELES — A former transit officers has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed black man on an Oakland train platform.
Johannes Mehserle was found guilty on Thursday in the New Year’s Day 2009 killing of 22-year-old Oscar Grant.
Involuntary manslaughter carries a sentence of two to four years.
The next hearing was set for Aug. 6.
An attorney for Grant’s family says they are “extremely disappointed” with the verdict against the officer.
Attorney John Burris said outside a Los Angeles court Thursday that the verdict “is not a true representation of what happened” to Oscar Grant.
