How does the host manage to hold himself back from shouting obscenities? The audience were no help at all. Most of them were as wrong as the contestant on just what that round floaty thing in the night sky is actually doing up there. The girlfriend wasn’t exactly confident that The Moon revolved around The Earth. She took a while to nod assuredly that she knew the right answer, about the same time she appeared to realise her partner was actually a dim bulb in a vacant, dark warehouse.

That was sad to watch. I can’t believe so many of those people thought the sun revolved around the earth. What year was that show taped, 900BC?

Hmmm….
It is quite a tricky question…
The moon ORBITS the Earth, but at the same time it does ROTATE (at such a rate that we always see the same side) around the Earth…
but looking at the other answers, it would be stupid to choose anything else…
besides, the question stated “rotates AROUND the earth” hint, hint!

the earth rotates around the sun.. wich can be confused by what rotates around earth.

Albert Einstein said everyone has the right to consider himself at rest. Therefore, if you considered yourself to be stationary the Sun would revolve around the earth just as the earth would revolve around the moon if you considered the moon as the stationary point.
The sun is picked as the reference point because when we study the solar system it makes sense because all the planets orbit the sun. In reality, the whole solar system is moving.

We are morons!!!, you think this idiot on tv deserves a voice to vote for a president in a “real” republic, you think this guy can handle life’s important decisions? This is why mob rule is no so great. For someone like Cheney, laughing off his CFR ties, and calling west virginians inbred hicks, is completly in line with what any normal person with above mental retardation iq would think if you just live long enough and see how a great mass of people all over the world are willing to abuse themselves by giving up their rights, and freedoms in order to have more time to watch american idol and waste their precious time on this earth by concerning themselves with angelina jolie’s baby. I’m for liberty without question, but you sometimes have to wonder, maybe the guys in the top have a point. I praise Alex for everything he has done, but oh my, after seeing this, there has to be some element of anger about him busting his butt every single day to do research and tell us about all the corruption, and have the other 99.99 percent of people who don’t know of him bring our world into 1984 (and worse).
You didn’t even need any sort of education for that question, just look at the sky sometimes. The guy is in his 40+, he had enough time to figure it out.

Tests carried out back in the 1950s clearly showed that a child’s IQ reduced with each year of schooling.
Interestingly parents face jail sentences in the UK for not ensuring their children attend school. (This way they can take your children into care and ensure that dumbing down ops take place).

I was wrong about the earth and moon. If you consider a point on the moon as the stationary frame of reference the earth would not rotate around the moon. There would be no relative motion at all. The earth would be sitting at the same point in the sky rotating about its axis. That is why you always see the same hemisphere of the moon.
I’m sure this is what he was thinking

After one gets over laughing, the seriousness of this situation hits home.
I could see if you asked a very young child, but then you might actually get the right answer. This is a grown man. Not only that, almost half the dimwits in the audience thought the sun revolved around the earth.
This dumbing down is worldwide. In the US, there’s a show about whether parents are as smart as their fifth-graders. Guess who turns out to be smarter most of the time.?
My sincere apologies to Giordano Bruno, Galileo Galilee Copernicus and all pioneering scientists. After all the untold numbers of people burned at the stake or hung for believing that the earth revolved around the sun, these twits take us back to the Dark Ages. Next up: Is the Earth flat?

That’s scary. That really is basic knowledge not being known. I could imagine if there were a time limit to the answer – in the seconds – then, there might be an error caused by stress. But he had all the time in the world. Just over half the audience thought the Sun rotated around the earth. That is completely insane!

Even the question was not phrased quite right. The moon “revolves” around the earth. It “rotates”, but it’s rotation is not what moves it around the earth. The fact that there was no uproarious laughter from the audience after this question is also sad.

Actually the answer is definitely a and b. The earth and the sun both rotate around the center of gravity of the two masses. The same for the earth and moon. Sorry, but this is a dumb post because the only thing it proves is the question is dumb and that science is not taught.

some people said it was a bad question but i think the translation was bad because graviter means gravitate or orbit it doesn’t really mean rotate. the people who say that the sun rotates around the earth are wrong because even though the sun and earth exert the same gravitational force on each other the sun is 300,000 times more massive so it moves 300,000 times less than the earth does. so it wasn’t a bad question.

Is it the French that isn’t being translated accurately? I mean, is this a question asking about General Relativity or something? No one could possibly not know that the moon rotates around the earth… Although, I did have a middle school teacher tell the class that the moon was a planet. This other kid & I got sent to the principal when we informed her that it’s a satellite.

The correct translation of this question was what gravitates around earth. The answer is the moon. The earth’s gravity hold the moon to the earth. The subtittle was wrong. Again the question was what gravitates around the planet. Not the sun
