  • Beck: Batman vindicates Bush’s ‘conservative values on the war on terror.’

    Think Progress
    Thursday, Aug 7, 2008

Last month, author Andrew Klavan wrote that the new Batman film is a “paean of praise to the fortitude and moral courage that has been shown by George W. Bush in this time of terror and war.” CNN’s Glenn Beck agreed today, listing off controversial Bush policies he claims were vindicated by the film’s showcase of “conservative values on the war on terror”:

But Batman goes into another country and with a C-130 snatches a guy out, and then throws him back here into Gotham. So there’s rendition. At one point the Morgan Freeman character says to Batman, wait a minute, hang on, you’re eavesdropping on everyone in Gotham? And Batman says, yes, to stop this terrorist. Morgan Freeman says, I can’t be a part of it. And yet Morgan Freeman does become a part of it, and they find the Joker. One of the ways they find the Joker is through eavesdropping. I mean the parallels here of what’s going on is to me stunning.

    Watch it:

Beck also said that Bush’s willingness to “die as the worst president ever because of the war on terror” is “exactly the message that Batman carries.”

50 Responses to “Beck: Batman vindicates Bush’s ‘conservative values on the war on terror.’”

    1. Heimlich Says:

Using a comic book character and fictional script to prove you were right and vindicating yourself… hmmm…. speechless…

    2. blahblah Says:

So…rendition and spying on everyone is VALIDATED by a COMIC BOOK MOVIE? The sad thing is, a huge portion of the dumbed down American populous would actually consider this argument.

    3. Josh Says:

what date did he write this?
Australian Neo-con columnist Andrew Bolt wrote a piece with the exact same premise a few weeks ago: http://www.news.com.au/heralds.....17,00.html

    4. Expat in Poland Says:

What gets me are the facts that this is allowed to pass as an argument and that the asshole is allowed to be on the ‘news’. I’m shocked, again.

    5. TruthSeeker24 (Timothy) Says:

What does this “The Dark Knight” movie have to do with being a conservative. Glen Beck is living in fantasy. Rendition, torture, and wiretapping people without a warrant has nothing to do with being aligned with conservative values at all? It has nothing to do with conservative or liberal values for that matter. Using a comic book or a movie to justify bad policies is not not desperate, but a fraudulent way in getting real accurate points of view across.

    6. Vern Says:

It’s all to maintian the illusion the Bush is somehow a hero. So long as the majority of Americans believe it that’s all that matters. Unless people are willing to wake up and realize that this whole thing is one big script played out by the neocons for a New World Order the drama will continue.

    7. NoBozos Says:

What sort of embecile would look to a fantasy hero to justify the actions of a real-life liar/psychopath/moron? Beck is just kissing up to Bush trying to raise money for his coming surgery, seeking to remove his cranium from his rectum. In my view, Batman3 is a lloonnnggg, dark, waste of time; kinda like watching Glenn Beck.

    8. blaje Says:

Yeah, but Batman turns out to be tragedy in the end, idiot. Batman did all those things, but he still was succumbing to fear. He eventually had to rely on the people to do good and say no to no more fear in order to win against the joker. That, and thry destroyed his easdropping device in the end.,

People don’t really read into the movie, do they.

    9. Keith Says:

      HOLY GUANO BATMAN ! ! !

    10. BadMan Says:

Hollywood is the worlds biggest single brainwashing enterprise – movie theaters are walk-in-dry-cleaners for the mind and movies watch-and-go-brain shampoo – with a shrinking guarantee.

The American Dream that you can still believe in without having to go to sleep.

    11. gothamcity Says:

I Just got back from seeing Batman the dark night. I had exactly the same thoughts as Glen. I don’t think Glen is supporting Bush here, but I do agree that this movie is totally about rendition, eavesdropping, torture, loss of freedoms etc in the name of terrorism.

Glen questions how this film could have been made. While taking a long walk home after the film, I wandered the same thing, supposing Hollywood to be democrat lovers etc. Then I thought what if the neo cons paid for this movie to be made, what if they paid for the script to support their views and get everyone used to marshal law, eavesdropping, renditions etc. Then I thought what if Heath ledger, who got really into the role, knew about the people who financed it and was ready to go public.

Nonsense I say to myself, but worse things have happened.

    12. Greggmcg Says:

Don’t forget that under the law Batman is a criminal. I bet Mr. Beck didn’t think of that one.

    13. Scotland Says:

I gotta say Glenn Beck and CNN are feeding those who hate Bush and that is basically the whole world total crap so they can really say that the worlds biggest asshole is a great guy. CNN you are manipulating every one of your countrymen and should be convicted of treason. Not only of your countrymen but of the whole damn world and don’t even get me started on FOX news. It is pretty obvious why it is called FOX news because they will try and outfox you with their shit but it is far from convincing. I bet Bush even had ties to make this movie

    14. Gary S Says:

Never really been into Batman or the rest of the Marvel gang of super heroes, but it is sad to see Batman be used this way. So this is what happens when Batman meets 24? A pity there was no torture scenes and then a judge at a kangaroo court to send to joker to some gulag in Eastern Europe for “questioning”.

It is sad, but it appears the masses are likely to just clap their hands…

    15. newfy777 Says:

always thought Beck was an irritating piece of chit..now I’m quite sure..he is all in now…pure Zionist NWO scum puppet…money corrupts..multi million dollar CNN military industrial complex propaganda mouthpiece saleries corrupts absolutely..Beck will go down with the rest of them for treason..

    16. Luke Says:

Yet another piece of thinly veiled Hollywood propaganda crap that I’ll gladly boycott. I think that I’ll use the money instead to buy a copy of the excellent ‘V for Vendetta’ DVD.

    17. Frank Thoughts Says:

Bush so locked it down and we all benefit from that. I shake when I think a wimp like Gore could have been in the Whitehouse. Give Bush his due: he took the slime on and won.

    18. Joker Says:

A couple things about this: 1. The joker is shown to have no agenda, and he is far from being a bin laden. 2. The entire government, police in BATMAN are corrupt…whats the answer to that? 3.Batman kicks the crap out of a ton of SWAT guys…who want to kill innocent people…whats the answer to that? 4.Joker says he exists because of Batman, they complete eachother…no terrorism without patriot act? Huh? Batman is a vigilante…Bush/America must follow laws, its a government, he’s an administrator…”Two-Face” is evil because he’s a D.A., he’s not allowed morally to hand out his form of justice…Bush is TWO-FACE if anything, the man who rounded up a ‘thousand terrorists’ only to later go around torturing and killing…Batman may be what some people want, but BATMAN doesn’t exist, he’s a myth, BUSH IS REAL. If BUSH were in a BATMAN film, he’d more or less be on the side of Raz Al Goul, in the last film, a fascist who attempts to take over, all in the name of ‘good.’ I believe this movie is WAY above the heads of redneck AMERICA, but they’ll see what they want to see, just like the punks who watch Star Wars and side with THE EMPIRE ‘because they have cool uniforms.’ A fascist is a fascist, he’ll rationalize anything to suit his cause…(i.e. “jews aren’t human, their rats…put them in the gas chamber…”) I will agree, there ARE arguments about these points from the right-wing fascists, that make sense…why cover up TWO-FACE’s crimes? Why illegal rendition out of CHINA? All I can say is, sure, I could potentially see BATMAN as a fascist, look at the NEW Batman Symbol, its a Third Reich Eagle turned into a Bat without the swastika…yes Glen, Batman could be a fascist after all…it was based on Frank Miller’s FASCIST Batman comic “DARK KNIGHT” after all…where Batman gets to do all kinds of nefarious things…sure I can see it, but there are a few loose ends in that theory when you look at the movie again…loose ends in the fascist theory…suggesting, if anything, perhaps its better to talk about the movie, rather than use it as a propaganda banner…its a conversation piece folks…anyone who would hold up a movie as a propganda flag, saying “SEE WE’RE RIGHT” is fascist modus operandi, be very weary of anyone who does this…even for left wing type films…movies shouldn’t be seen as manifestos.

    19. Frank Thoughts Says:

People who slam Bush do not know the burden and the scale of threat. He hasn’t been perfect, and his right-wing Christian hooey is hard to take, but fighting it hard has been the right thing to do.

    20. George Zip Says:

Let’s see if Glenn Beck can pass the Neo-Con-test.

      1. Bully? – Check
      2. Coward? – Check
      3. Alcoholic? – Check

Yep, little Glenny passed the test with flying colors.

    21. no one Says:

      Frank,
And how do you know “the burden and the scale of threat”? Don’t tell me you know it from what Bush is saying? And when did you actually see Bush fighting?:)

    22. dave Says:

Here’s a long view on the GWOT, (global war on terror) for your consideration.

      It’s fraudulent.

Those who espouse it, (often the real terrorists) always claim there is a boogey man out to get you, who is, “BEYOND THEIR CONTROL”, which is FALSE. Invariably, they are frat-boy, elite, materialistic, skull and bones, CIA, governmental, cowards, who just happen to be close family friends with “the terrorists”. They operate like a mafia, so everyone stays in line, “or else”. They are both the messenger of the GWOT, and the message itself. When they claim, “there is a threat out there”, it is because they ARE the threat.

Maybe you had an older brother who would grab your arm and slap you with it in jest, saying “stop hitting yourself, hahaha, why are you hitting yourself? hahaha”. Maybe you did or maybe you didn’t, but that is the mentality. The GWOT is adolescent bullying played out on a global scale.

As an average person under the influence of this worldview, it allows one to cede control and responsibility for their own circumstances. “Yeah, I’m a poor oppressed shmuck, but it’s out of my hands”. It’s an easy out so to speak, based on a convenient little white lie that “I am helpless”.

But for both the rulers and the ruled, the lie needs to be continuously reaffirmed.

That’s why they have to re-sell it, over and over in movies, and fabricate it in the real world.

Both the bully and the bullied have to buy into this view for it to remain stable. It is a habit that both benefit from in some way. Breaking the habit means stepping out of ordinary ways and means of behaving, which is scary. Once one or the other starts to question these habitual behaviors, it begins to unravel. The bully may awaken with remorse for the harm they’ve done, or the bullied may finally get fed up and stand up for themselves.

Both parties need to re-learn habitual behaviors. In the end, when either party “rules” without consideration for the other, both parties lose.

By the way, it never ends. As long as there are bored older brothers, there will be bullying, and its global manifestation, the GWOT. Even though our “enemy” seems totally evil, he is still our brother, and even killing him will only perpetuate this archetypal struggle. So we’re going to have to work it out together.

Even though the tyrants can’t necessarily see it, tyranny isn’t any good for the tyrant, and even though the oppressed struggle in fear to stand up, people are not meant to be oppressed, and must eventually face their fears.

The ruled and the rulers, in whatever form, are cosmic dance partners. It’s up to us what type of dance we chose. It can be a violent struggle, or an elegant tango.

    23. FuckTheNWO! Says:

Dont Get Me started on how this move was designated specifically to brainwash the masses. One day you’re watching Batman, the next day, you’re signing up for a frontal lobe lobotomy so you can go work in one of Bush’s secret prison camps AKA the federal reserve which funded the nazis in WW2. The Whole Hollywood system, especially the Jews (which is all of Hollywood today, especially that sycophantic shill Mel Gibson) is supporting the Zionist cause of global enslavement. Movies like that today are telling people that its OK to serve vigilante justice. That its OK for the super rich to go around and murder meanwhile the “sheeple” stand around and get blown up. And dont even get me started on how parasitic Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 is just another layer of the NWO’s tightly fabricated plan to destroy the world. It is teaching women that it is Ok to enslave people of color, and that they should bow down and give head to their corporate masters. But If Only the masses knew….

    24. Stephane Says:

This is ridiculous. Its only a movie, dont you have better thing to do? instead of comparing a SCI-FI movie to real people why dont you do something constructive whit yourtime ?Its like when GTA 4 was released, everyone was going crazy and saying should we ban it ? will people be able to do the difference? they interviewed some Psychiatrist and they all said people arent that stupid they know how to do the difference between pure fiction and reality. Only those that already have mental probleme will commit act of violence and even whit out this game they would do it so no need to go crazy about this. I was raised all mi life whit Video games and movie and i cant even kill a spider in mi house.

    25. Maz Says:

This argument is the biggest load of crap ever! I can’t believe that Prison Planet.com has even bothered to cover this, especially since the ethos of the site (and to a greater extent, the truth movement) is in direct opposition to mainstream media outlets like CNN.

Batman has always been a vigilante pure and simple and existed way, way before the NWO was a twinkle in the neo-con’s eyes – the term didn’t even exist until some 30 years after Batman was created. He’s not vindicating Bush in any way, because ultimately Batman’s a force for good. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll remember that it’s Batman that holds the key to shutting down the eave-dropping system which he freely gives to Lucius Fox to use once he’s found the Joker. As for the whole rendition idea: the guy he captures is a criminal, he deserves to get brought back to face the justice system of Gotham City for the crimes he committed. The thing about rendition (in the real world) is that it happens outside the borders of the country that wouldn’t ordinarily allow openly torturing it’s prisoners.

Jeez people, it’s only a movie!

    26. DaRk KnIgHt Says:

The man the I “renditioned” was proven that he was a criminal… the criminal known only as “The Joker” made himself CLEARLY A THREAT, (making those videos of killing people) just like Osama Bin Laden… I would never allow anyone to compare me to Bush, because I am just some pissed off (rich)jerk in a costume, mad, cause my parents were shot dead in cold blood. I ACTUALLY CARE about the public’s well-being, hence why I do what I do. Bush cares about people, sure… but notice how ALL of his friends are RICH? I have been living with Mr Pennyworth(Alfred) forever and I wouldn’t necessarily consider him to be rich, nor would I consider my buddy robin to have ever been rich either… I mean, c’mon, you don’t think that he could make a lot of money doing high flying stunts at a circus do you?! Compare me to T.Boone Pickens, Robin Hood, hell, compare me to Lionel Richie… but the next person that compares me to W is going to get some Bat-A-Rangs to the face!

    27. Brandon Says:

I really liked the new batman movie, but I have to agree that there does seem to be some propaganda in there, I don’t think it was intentional. I think the director stayed true to what the joker was like in the comics and it just so happens he was a murderous terrorist.

    28. the Liberterian Says:

I loved the Dark Knight. In the Dark Knight there was actually a real terrorist for Batman to fight. But Bush has a different agenda.
In addition to the eavesdropping with sonar, I guess you can look at it like the Patriot act. Morgan Freeman and Batman destroyed the patriot act at the end of the film. Bush hasn’t destroy the patriot act and he using it to enslave us. Batman’s not doing that.

    29. www.myspace.com/mattmosleymovies Says:

Pro Bush my Dick – it’s just a movie with a complex story

    30. alex hidel Says:

More food for thought for neocons that need an oversimplified Good vs Evil cartoon to explain to friends why they support NeoCon Patriot Act, renditions, wiretapping, no knock warrants, and mass dragnets.

Have to fill in the gap after Jack Baur got another DUI. A homeland security funded progam on Fox, as Jericho which was mysteriously pulled…..Fox news scroll stated “low ratings”

      Neocons need role models too.

    31. alex hidel Says:

And Glen Beck says with hand over heart “I’m really a libertarian at heart” then qualifies that he “has woken from his stupidity since and grown up in the ‘real world’ of terror “.

that is an old joke played on liberals
“If you are Republican in your 20’s, you have no heart. If you are still a democrat in your 40’s, you have no brain”

“You are not affilliated with an organized party ?, Oh, so you are a democrat, ha ha !”

I guess Howard Dean Scream not so funny now, he ran the GOP into the ground from the dark trench of the DNC with Soros $$$.

Soros bottomed out Halliburton stocks with propaganda films that exposed how they harm troops and wasted tax dollars. Soros bought majority of Halliburton stock @50%.

Keeping laughing GOP, your last ship is sinking.
One more party to sink, then “mission accomplished.”

    32. alex hidel Says:

No wonder Tom Cruise banned his wife from showing up on Batman set to do this film that banked big .

Money don’t rule Cruise anymore ? Paramount don’t call shots for him, plays a Nazi role, plays an anti-semite in Stiller comedy ? Gee, Tom is getting more dangerous by the day. I love it !

After seeing LIONS FOR LAMBS, it is obvious Cruise has a beef with NeoCons that highjacked the GOP conservative party of old days of fiscal spending and ending Dem. wars, and cutting waste. Those GOP days are over ! Just ask Ron Paul.

    33. Gianni Says:

“Conservative” is code word for pure satanic evil in this double-think society.

    34. GJG Says:

Wow..this is the second time you guys posted an inaccurate depiction of “The Dark Night”.The message I got from this movie was very clear..That we are losing this world to the Evil NWO,but in the end we the people, have the choice to take it back. The movie purposely shows the emerging police state, loss of civil liberties, and the evil that controls all. There are lines in the movie like,”it will get darkest before the dawn” or the scene on the ferry where it was the people who take back the choice to do what is right.Long story short,I thought this movie was a masterpeice and A loud SOS wake-up call to the masses..Stop the exaggerating to move your agenda Alex Jones!! your no better than the NWO when you do this..Peace n Love..

    35. David Lee Says:

I said it the second I walked out of the theatre. I’ve been saying it all along. The messages in this movie are INSANE! I mean when Batman taps 30 million phones to catch the “terrorist” I nearly fell out of my seat. People stood and clapped at the end while I stood in awe of how it flew over their heads. But hen again it always does doesn’t it?

I asked my wife if she caught the line at the end when the police commish says.

“The people don’t need to know the truth, they just need to be rewarded for their faith.”

She didn’t catch it. Nobody caught it. I think I was the only one in the theatre who did. That is a pretty sad and twisted situation.

Also the previews for the film were

The Day the world stood still
      Terminator 4
      The Watchmen

All with serious Illuminati over tones! Hey why does Keanu Reeves always star in the most blatant and obvious films that deal with their secret little messages? It isn’t because he is any kind of a good actor that’s for sure. I always wondered how he got those roles (He stars in the Day the World stood still – pay attention to that particular film as it hits theatres)

Anyway what’s in the news today?

    36. David's lynch Says:

I went to see the movie today and must state that it didn’t upset.
Yes, Lucius agreed to eavesdrop on all of Gotham City once but in the end you see all the servers hotwiring and they eventually don’t get to keep all the stored data.
What’s more, the guy they deport from China was a corporate head wanted for fellonies and such things. At least he wasn’t a conservative from Minneapolis running an anti-war website.
And in fact it is mentioned right in the beginning of the movie, as a subtle pun, that martial law didn’t help the romans in a time of civil crisis any more when Cesar chose never to give up his dictatorial powers.

And after all, the whole plot of the movie was “either you die hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villian”, what refers to Harvey Dent’s later rampage after he is changed from a District Attorney into a grieving psychotic towards the end of the movie.

So overall I have to state it was easy to overlook the National Guard deployment and all the US army stationed in the streets, m16s at the ready, and enjoy a rather stunning epic adventure.

I mean, as for Batman and Bush, Batman choses to alter the account on Dent’s later unsettling actions in order to maintain a shred of hope for the city, having him die as a hero before the rest of the world gets to see him become the villain he originally fought.

Bush probably will “die” as a villain anyway in that context.

    37. JOKER Says:

you guys are trippin… its joker who was spittin the truth in this shit, member when he goes to harvey dent and bitches about how everyone has their little “plans” and when their “plans” don’t go according to agenda everyone gets freaked out and how we could tell everyone a boat of soldiers will die tomorrow but as long as its part of the “plan” noone gives a fuck… its the NWO as long as it doesn’t upset their “plans” and to induce a lil anarchy… joker’s the real d00d in this movie… i mean… not to do evil and do good would be an ideal joker but at least he wasn’t a victim to BS (belief systems) :)

    38. Bobhayford Says:

      *SIGH*. How is this continuing?

Christopher Nolan (writer and director), Jonah Nolan (screenplay), and David Goyer (writer) have all stated that they had absolutely no intentions of making a political point (be it neo-con or otherwise, i.e. these aren’t political people — newsflash, sadly – not everyone is!) with this film. They got the eavesdropping storyline from a Batman comic that was put out years ago. The joker info was taken from comics like “The Killing Joke”. There was no intention of spreading a message so the only people you can condemn are the original writers. They just happened to pick these stories in order to make an ENTERTAINING film.

    39. The REAL Chad Says:

I’m a HUGE Batman fan, but one thing that’s always bothered me in the comics is that he’s able to trace and eavesdrop on EVERYONE. They were able to track down a criminal once by tracing all size 9 shoe sales in Gotham City. Realistic? Probably not. At least I hope not!

    40. Smacky Mcgee Says:

Way to go Glenn, you only caught on about 2 weeks after everyone else did.

    41. BadMan Says:

So, since the movie is made in the spirit of original Batman comics “it’s just a movie” with no hidden messages let alone purpose , well, other than to make a lot of money?

Ever thought on the possibility that comics themselves were originally being used for conditioning young people especially?

I think it’s a possibility and even likely that the people in the shadows of hollywood are making every possible effort for getting their messages out in the most open form of voluntary brainwashing – the movies.

They control the military industry, the energy industry, food and medical industry – politics, banking and religion – but not Hollywood?

Folks, you didn’t read too many comics when you were young, did you?

    42. this video is too biased: 2 Says:

I still think bush is simply making a resource grab. I think ron paul is right by wanting to dismantle the empire gracefully rather than by implosion.

    43. Gregory Fegel Says:

The Batman character is a wealthy tycoon who noonlights as a right-wing vigilante. I couldn’t see why so many of the other poor kids admired this character. Batman and Superman — the guy who draped himself in the American flag — gave me the creeps. The only comics I liked were “Classics Illustrated.”

    44. Gregory Fegel Says:

Hollywood is FULL of CIA/Project Mockingbird operatives. Check out the propaganda movie “A Mighty Heart,” starring Angelina Jolie, and read Jolie’s public statement about how well the Surge in Iraq is working and how the US troops need to remain there indefinitely.

Jolies’ father, Jon Voight, is just like her. “Mission Impossible” is a flagrant promo for the CIA.

    45. Gregory Fegel Says:

Any Hollywood film or TV show that features US military personnel or equipment is subject to editorial and script control and revision by the US military. No films are made with US military cooperation that do not contain a propaganda element. The US military maintains a large film industry liasson staff that manages all such projects.

Someone mentioned that the new Batman movie features a US military C-130 transport plane. There’s your answer — the Batman movie HAD to have US military script control, or that C-130 would simply not have been in the movie.

    46. Todd Says:

The main justification for the so-called war on “terror” is the official story on 9/11.

Anyone who’s done any real research knows that the official story is pure fiction, so how laughingly ironic that authority-worshipping neocons like Glenn Beck would argue that a fiction-based “war on terror” is vindicated by — what else? — a FICTION-BASED MOVIE!

That’s the best laugh I’ve had all week, Glenn. Thanks.

    47. AK Says:

So Batman using wiretapping to get one foe, and then dismantling the whole program when he is done is like Bush, how?

Bush is not looking for one foe, he’s looking for all of us as if we were the foe, and he has no plans of getting rid of his power grab!

Batman, the original hero, becoming the villain to save the soul of the people, is like Bush how?

Bush was never a hero. He dodged service when he was younger, he dodged every responsibility he had later in life as head of businesses and banks that he bankrupted, and as mayor of Texas…

and as President, he has yet to do any one thing to make himself a hero.

The only connection I see is that Bush started out as the Joker, and ended up as a Two-Faced destroyer of our country.

    48. FRENCHIE Says:

THE JEWS ARE LAUGHING AT YOU USA…adios.

    49. BadMan Says:

AK – most people that go to see Batman are not aware that “Bush has no plans of getting rid of his power grab”. In fact most people don’t seem to be aware of anything. If they were, it wouldn’t work, as the whole point is to create an illusion on the subconsious level.
