Despite Mass Cancellations, rate hikes

As stories of people losing their existing insurance policies due to the launch of Obamacare continue to pour in, the political watchdog website PolitiFact.com ridiculously suggests that the President’s promise that Americans would be able to keep their policies is still “half true”.

PolitiFact, which prides itself on “sorting out the truth in politics,” notes that “In reality, Americans are not simply able to keep their insurance through thick and thin.”

The writer, Louis Jacobson, also admits that “the CBO figures suggest that the law could increase the rate, at least modestly,” of “forced plan-switching.”

Despite these admissions, the website still suggests Obama has not been deceptive in his assurances that existing policies would not be cancelled, because the new healthcare law “does take pains to allow Americans to keep their health plan if they want to remain on it.”

It’s a weak argument. Despite the fact that Obama flat out stated “If you’re one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance,” Jacobson indicates a number of times that the statement was more of a “suggestion” than a promise.

Sure sounds like a promise to me. Surely a “suggestion” would have been “If you’re one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will likely be able keep your health insurance.”

Even the White House today admitted that “it’s true” some Americans will not be able to keep their health care plan under Obamacare:

Journalist Ed Henry asked, “The president, when he was trying to get the law passed, repeatedly said, if you currently have health insurance you will be able to keep your plan. This morning David Axelrod was pressed on that point and said, the majority — the vast majority — will be able to keep their plans. He no longer works at the from White House. From the podium, will you admit that when president said, if you have a plan, you’ll get to keep it, that that was not true?”

Press Secretary Jay Carney answered, “So it’s true there are existing health care plans on the individual market that do not meet those minimum standards and therefore do not qualify for the Affordable Care Act.”

CBS News ran yet another piece this morning detailing the fact that Americans are losing their current health insurance plans as they no longer meet the strict regulations within the Affordable Care Act.

The report notes that California based insurer Kaiser Permanente has cancelled 160,000 policies, while there are at least another 300,000 dropped policies in Florida.

A tearful Diane Barrett told reporters that in the new year, she will lose her current insurance plan, for which she pays $54, and will be forced to pay $591 for her new plan – more than 10 times the amount.

“What I have right now is what I’m happy with, and I just want to know why I can’t keep what I have,” says Barrett.”Why do I have to be forced into something else?”
