Five Birmingham police officers have been fired for a January 2008 beating of an already-unconscious suspect with fists, feet and a billy club, a battering caught on videotape until a police officer turned off the patrol car camera, city and police officials said today.

I can see why the officers might have been a little ticked off after viewing the 20 minute chase
The guy nearly ran down many people and could have caused many injuries and deaths
He did not know he was even beaten LMAO on that one
Hope they put him away for a long long time
The officers need to remember its not like the old days everything is on video

I mean, cops should be professional no matter what happens, but they are in a no win situation – justice is rarely served – purposefully to degrade us all. But when cops get sick of chasing down scum and constantly being put in danger, along with EVERYONE else on the road that guy passed, they need to take it up with their superiors, the judges and the scumbag politicians that are merrily dismantling our nation as a society for their own personal gain and leaving us with a cesspool of violent criminals, blind idiots, and thug law enforcers.

Yes, everything is on video now (Big Brother sees all), but if I saw this guy almost kill one of my coworkers I would definetly throw in a punch and call it “self defense”. I hope they charge this guy with everything. Also realize that our taxes will be paying for the damages he caused, his lawyers, and the resources expended on pursing that high speed chase. Joe with all due respect, it has been shown time and time again that police escalate chase situation which causes them to get dangerous, had the officers fell back the minute the car chase got too hot, they could’ve just tailed him to where he was heading and arrest him once he feels safe. They have his plates, they have helicopters, there is absolutely no reason for these chases to occur. It’s all about the cops getting to rampage around in their souped up cruisers and getting their rocks off on it. Are peoples lives really worth tracking down some jag off that stole a 2000 dollar car. C’mon, everybody needs to start looking at shit in context, there was no reason that this chase had to go the way it did. I put about 90% of the fault on the officers. This guy had no right doing what he did but he is a criminal and is probably not a person who posseses the judgement necessary to make these types of decision, the police officers however are supposed to uphold justice and protect the public. I don’t see how chasing someone who goes balls out like that is protecting the public. Cops need re-education on how they should handle these situation. Radio’s are faster than any car. Confused? I am. Fired? They committed a crime and should be prosecuted. Assault…deadly force, abuse of power, possibly attempted murder. If you beat someone who just had a deadly accident you are through negligence, intent, or accident about the process of homicide. If you have a heart attack or are chocking and I obstruct you or create a situation for your continued or extended injury what is the intent there? Until you PROSECUTE the officers and start CONVICTING them when they do this they will not change. Turning off the camera should be a felony admission of guilt, complicity, conspiracy, or conspiracy after the fact; knowingly trying to obstruct justice or an investigation into a crime.
Bad cops put all cops good and bad at risk as well as the society as a whole. If harder sentences are given for those who harm, murder, or assault cops, shouldn’t harder sentences and standards be expected of those entrusted to keep the law?

What is surprising is that the police turned over the video. It is impossible to have video turned over in Los Angeles. If they did they would lose most of the police force. The police officer almost got ran over by two cars because he was dumb enough to run out in the middle of the road. Not only did he risk his life but he nearly caused an accident with the second car. The person fleeing had to swerve to avoid the spike strip. He also probably thought the officer was pointing a gun at him, which is usually the case. I only wish he had hit him.

Joe and Merlin are probably cops, otherwise, no on could condone this behavior. This happens too often, but this time it was caught on tape – in Birmingham. There was a similar case in Los Angeles, where a fleeing perp laid down on the ground, face down with arms and legs spread. When the cops got there the first thing one did was to kick him in the head/face and the next one laid his knee into the guy’s back/kidney area while another hit him with a baton. This would have gone unreported, except that a news heliocopter caught it all on video and put it on the web – it is probably still out there. The police captain is now investigating what happened – I guess he didn’t see the video. Finally, the biggie is the killing/murdering of people by cops who are exonerated within 24 hours by the DA – professional courtesy I figure.
Through the pollitics of fear we now have bloated police departments and DA’s offices. They create or invent crimes so that they can hire more staff which translates into more money and power for them. For us taxpayers, we get to pay bloated salaries, early overgenerous retirements, and a prison system that is the largest in the world – we have 25% of the world population of prisoners.
Cops that I have known have a us and them mentality. If you are not one of the club members you are a criminal who just has not been arrested yet any yu are guilty until proven innocent.

Motorolas are hard to outrun. Yes this is a guy who got what he deserved, but he also got what he did not deserve. I think the injuries from the crash coupled with a long prison sentence after waking up were enough without the beating. On the plus side, he was already unconscious, so he could not feel it. Yeah, and its impossible to know what’s going through their mind when they finally got a hold of that guy. Its easy to say they should act “professionally” – I mean – they SHOULD, but its not as easy as people make it sound.
Its just like troops being dropped into an irrational war and being shot at in the middle of a city -and just shooting back. Getting shot at is a terrifying feeling. You can not get close enough to the ground, it can not end fast enough. You want to shoot everything, anywhere, anything at all to make it stop. So yeah, civilians are going to get murdered, mowed down.
The real solution is for the asshole politicians and judges to stop sending troops to criminal wars, and putting police in the middle of a purposefully dumbed down, degraded, dehumanized society of degenerates – get these politicians and judges to stop, and you will not get these very ugly, yet very human reactions from these people.

After watching the video, yes police came close of casualty they had motive to be upset. But!!!!
The man who endangered many lives was not in a position to receive such an abusive beating by 5 police officers. They are hired to represent the law not to act like criminals do even though like I said the guy behaved in a very dangerous manner close to running over a police officer. It was a close call.

I live in what many people would define as an “upper class” neighborhood. It is a very quiet neighborhood. My 32 year old son lives with my wife and myself. Last Wednesday night my son while standing on the driveway of our home near the house when he was tased three times by police for no reason.
Supposedly, a neighbor reported a prowler outside of our home. My son was standing in front of my SUV when he saw a bright light being shinned though the windshield of the vehicle from the direction of the passenger side window. He took a couple of steps forward to investigate the goings on and a person immediately direct the bright light in his eyes preventing him from seeing who it was. He told the person to lower the light so he could see them and if they came and nearer to him, he would consider them to be trespassing. As he said this he sensed or heard someone come up behind him. As he started to turn to see it was there he was tased, fell to the concrete drive while being tased a total of three times.
The police never identified themselves, or said do this or don’t do this or we will tase you. NOTHING!!! The police have charged him with willfully obstructing, interfering, or delaying a police officer in the performance of his or her duty. It will cost my son thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees to defend himself against the bogus charge. This is an outrage and it is insult to injury. First my son was attacked and then tased three times for no reason. Next, he is forced to spend thousands of dollars to defend against a bogus charge trumped up by police to justify their unlawful act of tasing him.
The cops are totally out of control these days. We are not even safe from being attacked by the Gestapo cops on our own property while we are minding our own business and harming no one.
Something must be done to put a stop to the police being able to attack innocent people at will and with impunity.

We have a legal system that encourages criminals, prison systems that disseminate an education in crime, media that poisons our minds, legislation that encourages the breakdown of the family and subsequently society.
We put our police into no-win situations, no matter how professional or how effective they are, as soon as the criminals hit the justice system they end up right back onto the streets, or doing time in Crime University (prison) and come out smarter, shadier, and more violent and dehumanized. Our police themselves are transforming into dehumanized brutes, who are being allowed to justify extra-legal means to “deal” with perpetrators.
There is no excuse for punitively beating an apprehended (and unconscious) suspect. Professionalism is needed, to neutralize and apprehend dangerous criminals like this, and then its the court’s job to make sure this man is made an example of – never gets an opportunity to do this again, and serves as a deterrence for others considering a similar crime.
But even that isn’t enough, family needs to be rebuilt, the government needs to be removed from interfering with our lives and our families, the media needs to be decentralized, and their special interest message of poison and destroying our minds needs to be silenced.
Don’t tell me these punks running from the police came up with this behavior all on their own. It comes from a systematic campaign of manipulation on our urban poor, the down trodden in our society, the exploitation of our youth at the hands of media magnates hand in hand with bankers, industrialists, social engineers, and the criminals we elect into office.

Thought id comment quick on this, it would seem actually that the driver waz not at all actually trying to run over the officer, but rather swerve around a vehicle and possibly avoid the spike strip. The driver waz obviously a maniac, and shouldnt have necesarily been doing what he waz doing but we need to remember the corrupt system and the police are also not rite for what they do, they too are criminals. The cops create these types of situations because thats what they are trained to do.
All violent acts by police are all pre-meditated.
They don’t care if they are caught on camera because however it turns out, they get a golden handshake with a perfect curriculum to enter Blackwater and the like.
If five people were to beat up a policeman they would lock them up and throw away the key.
Which only goes to show which one of us is the protected species.

This guy was a menace to others and needed to be stopped, but he didn’t deserve the beating he got. This driver needs to go to jail.
With that said, I can’t believe what I am reading here. Have you people lost your minds? Have you become so tolerant of the police state that you can’t see when the cops have overstepped their authority? What gives them the right to do this to ANYONE? I’ll answer my own question—nothing!
The cops jumped him like a gang of thugs and beat the crap out of him. He was laying on top of his hands and clearly not moving—he posed no threat to the cops. If the cops were afraid of getting shot or unsure of the threat he posed, why get close to him and jump him? Why not follow procedure and hold him at gunpoint if he is posing a threat? The fact is that he was NO THREAT—he was unconcious, not moving, and laying on his hands. There was no reason to beat him, not for one cop and certainly not for FIVE. Yes they were jacked up on adrenaline and probably angry, but they are the professionals and are supposed to remain in control. They instead acted like jack-booted thugs and dished out their own brand of “justice” before letting the law, or the citizen, have his day in court.
This is just a glaring example of the police state we are living in and those that defend this action by the cops have become nothing more than sheep for the shearing that is coming.

If someone tries to kill a cop that is attempted murder and is a crime. If we want to call ourselves civilized or enlightened, then we control our emotions and do the right thing. That is, sent the person to court and go through the correct channels. Cops, under no circumstances, should ever beat up someone. Unless we change the laws so that they can.

they should have taken him to the holiday inn & gave him a million dollars, plus a ferrari so he can out run the cops more often. Maybe he could have his own reality show & a house in Berverly hills. He was such a good criminal, he didn’t want to hurt anybody. I’m sure he’s a great person. If he would have killed you or a child it wouldn’t be his fault. Such bad cops!!!! Beating on a humble person. They need to show more kindness so future criminals don’t feel so threatened when there breaking the laws like raping little grils, selling crack to kids, killing 7 /11 clerks for petty cash, breaking in your house & stealing everything you worked hard for, I’m sure they’ll get locked away for good, thats why we have less criminals everyday becuase our judicial system does a good job keeping them locked up. Oh yea I’m sure if it would have been an illigal alien the beating would have been o.k. becuase he’s not a citizen and doesn’t have any (human) rights. Cops do have the ability to turn off their cameras. Usually what happens though is that the police dept will not turn it over to avoid multi-million dollar lawsuits. The video you usually see of abuse is from third parties. I know an individual who sells the video equipment to police depts.

Hmmm the driver almost ran over the cop, so i would say he got what he deserved. IF on the other hand he just fled a police stoppage and then got beat up after he fell out of his van, then the cops should be fired and or in prison.
Put yourself in the cops shoes, if i was the cop that almost got killed by that guy i’d want to pound the shit out of him too.

Ok. Yeah, guy probably doesn’t deserve any sympathy…
But for god’s sake!! His van flipped, he was tossed into the air out of the van, and he seemed unconcious laying on the ground. A cop runs up on him as he laid there (unconcious) and began hitting him with a nightstick. Then 2-3 of the other cops that came up just started punching him… wtf, how can anyone have symapthy for the cops in that situation?????

When he tried to run over the cop that is called attempted murder. I do not justify the beating but I do think they should have shot him on the spot. If that would happen more often there would be less running which would protect the citizens even better. People just don’t respect the badge anymore.
