The town of Bozeman, Montana has rescinded its policy requiring job applicants to submit their logins and passwords for all social network sites, email accounts, etc, as part of its background check process.
The city announced in a meeting (PDF) on Monday that it had suspended the practice as of Friday, June 19 and that it would update its hiring procedures within 30 days to determine a more appropriate level of screening for employees…It’s clear now, however, that the city has gotten a major whiff of its own bad PR and has decided to back off. In its meeting yesterday, city officials clarified that no candidate was ever disqualified for not disclosing the login info, and that the only staff to review password-protect information was the HR department. Still, the city is red-faced over the incident. “We appreciate the concern many citizens have expressed regarding this practice and apologize for the negative impact this issue is having on the City of Bozeman,” City Manager Chris A. Kukulski said in a statement.
“This was an honest mistake,” he continued. “Human Resources, our Police and Fire Departments were doing something they believed was consistent with our core values. I take full responsibility for this decision and we will work hard to regain the trust and confidence of the City Commission and our community.”

Can’t the CIA just give them your info from myspace, facebook and Twitter?
I mean if we are trying to save lives and money….
I have no pages on any of these CIA run data mining sites….

There is no more remaining anonymous anymore. They are really trying to get inside of your head to learn about the complete you with information like this. The precedent this would set is unnerving for most people. At some point, as jobs become more scarce, you will divulge everything just to get that job so you can survive.

OK, they backed off. So? Because the REALLY worrying aspect to this is why anyone would dream up such an idea in the first place. Especially when we are all told never to reveal these details to anyone – ever. What is the IQ of the person that thought this would work? Why didn’t anybody else tell them it was about as stupid an idea as it is possible to dream up? It shouldn’t ever have got to the “we’re so sorry “stage, it should have been obvious to anyone that it’s an idiotic idea long before that!
These issues keep coming at us like some whack a gofer game. Will common sense EVER prevail in public service?

this is why twittering is pointless, facebook and myspace really isnt all that great. I have had one for both of them for several years and i barely ever log in anymore. Infact reading this makes me just want to go and delete them. But i dont want to lose my way of contacting people at the same time….

Sickening that it even happened.
Even more sickening is that the droids complied
Even more sickening is this…”were doing something they believed was consistent with our core values.” Core values of what..the old Soviet Union?
Mr. City Manager Chris A. Kukulski…you have no idea what Americas founding core values are…kindly step down.
Government of the city of Bozeman…shame on you! Study the founding of America!
People of Bozeman educate yourselves about the country you live in and replace the city government as an example to other control freak narcissists that they are not welcome.
Put the federal control monster in a box and swallow the key.

This is A VICTORY!!!
But – as others so eloquently pointed out – it’s a sorry ass state that it EVER went this far in the first place.
Still – here is where vigilence and supporting the alternative media pays off!
