Brazil’s largest cities hit by blackout

A major electricity outage left tens of millions of people in Brazil’s two biggest cities without power on Tuesday night due to problems with the transmission lines that connect to the massive Itaipu dam.
The blackout affected Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as cities in at least four other states, hitting the industrialized southeastern part of Latin America’s largest country especially hard.
All of Paraguay, which gets most of its energy from the dam, was also briefly left in the dark.
Three hours after the blackout, power was beginning to be restored in some parts of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s financial capital and South America’s largest city. But much of the sprawling metropolis remained in the dark.

It is not technologically or economically feasible to switch to solar or wind energy generation in 5 years, let alone overnight! There is nothing wrong with nuclear energy generation either. Coal energy generation is very clean, however with more dire consequences relating to mining the energy source. Research these technologies before you bash them.

Well pointed out. Wind and solar are not year round reliable, either. BP is just another treehugging, carbon footprint walking, enviornmentally correct, Mother Earth worshipper.

First of all, thanks Will, With this kind off comment you must be a very civilized person, that´s why america is facing such fate, there´s no educational system. The weird about that blackout was that at the very same day, brazilian newspapers reported that CBS 60 minutes show said that, the 2005 and 2007 blackouts was a hacker attack and US intelligency is studing the case.

Alright this is shameless conspiracy mongering but someone, I thought it might have been this site, was talking just a few days ago about how power outages in Brazil were the result of computer hackers taking over the power grid. I imagine someone will know more than I do on this.
