NBC television anchor and managing editor Brian Williams was more candid than ever before during an appearance on The David Letterman Show last night, warning that the implications of yesterday’s shock stock market collapse make him hesitate leaving the house.

Williams described his feelings as he watched the Dow Jones swiftly lose nearly 1000 points as “a kind of 9/11 sickness in the pit of my stomach”.

Williams noted how the free fall crash was a “deep straight dive” as the Dow sunk in increments of 50 points before reaching -998 for the day, with stocks like Proctor and Gamble losing half their value within the space of 4 minutes, characterizing the events as a “stark raving emergency” and “harrowing stuff,” with traders have no idea whether the panic would stop at 1000 points.

Williams dismissed speculation that the collapse was caused by human error or computer glitches, attributing it instead to the continued chaos in Greece that threatens to topple the European Union and the Euro single currency.

“I’m telling you, on every television set at the NYSE this afternoon, was the live picture of police beating demonstrators in Greece, one fire on a sidewalk turned out to be three people on fire….here’s the daisy chain – Greece, to Portugal, to Italy,” said Williams.

“We’re going to be in some trouble here for a while, the danger is it hurts the U.S. economy – as someone said on television this afternoon as part of the cable coverage, the world has no money and the emperor has no clothes,” he added.

Ominously, Williams said that if he wasn’t too close to the situation, “I would probably not leave the house, but that’s how bad it is.” Despite the fact that this was a comedy show, not a single person in the audience laughed – Williams was deadly serious.
