Editor’s note: The unemployment rate during the Great Depression was %20.
For all the pain caused by the Great Recession, the job market still was not in as bad shape as it had been during the depths of the early 1980s recession — until now.
With the release of the jobs report on Friday, the broadest measure of unemployment and underemployment tracked by the Labor Department has reached its highest level in decades. If statistics went back so far, the measure would almost certainly be at its highest level since the Great Depression.
In all, more than one out of every six workers — 17.5 percent — were unemployed or underemployed in October. The previous recorded high was 17.1 percent, in December 1982.
This includes the officially unemployed, who have looked for work in the last four weeks. It also includes discouraged workers, who have looked in the past year, as well as millions of part-time workers who want to be working full time.

Official statistics have never been accurate on unemployment figures. If you run out of benefits they drop you off the list. They say you gave up looking for work if you run out of benefits and don’t count you anymore. Gave up? I supposed your to live off air alone and sleep under an overpass. You didn’t give up, your starving to death because their are not enough jobs.

Yep, they usually push the U3 stats through the MSM, when the U6 is much more accurate, which is closer to 30% unemployed/underemployed. Translates to about 50 million people since children and elderly aren’t factored in. Hell of a statistic when Obama is bragging about putting about half a million back to work (in mostly govt jobs).

They also don’t count people like me. Self-employed and broke because the economy is in the tank. I have been in business for myself and made a good living for 30 years, now there is no business and I am slowly going broke. May lose everything, who knows? I don’t get counted because I can’t even apply for unemployment. How many people just like me are not counted? I’ll bet the figure would push the unemployment figures above 30%.
Good luck in the coming turmoil…. Biker

Obama broke his promises to change politics – either never intended or was threatened. Either way, he and Bush are two sides of the same coin. Dont put faith in leaders, because they will let you down everytime. There are again two classes in our society (as is the case in most other societies) – the ruling class and everybody else. I know that some people think that because they make ten times more than their poverty-level brothers/sisters that they are wealthy, but in reality anyone who has to get up in the morning is working class. And all working class are getting, and have been getting, screwed for the last 30 or so years. No good Presidents since JFK tried to change things and he, his brother, MLK, etc. got assassinated and no one did anything about it. So we get the leadership that we are willing to endure…

I worked in 1982, and things are way worse now than then. Electronics and high tech was going strong in California and Texas then. There was hardy anything made in China in the stores. Heck, you could even buy made in USA wrist watches, computers and electronic calculators. You didn’t have to compete with mestizos and indians for jobs. The Detroit auto industry wasn’t doing so well, but there were other industries. Now all of those industries are gone. Palo Alto today is a ghost town compared to then.

Yeah this article also pretends things are about to get better or at least ignores the fact that the economy is about to take a second plunge and what effects that will have on unemployment.
This is not the great recession it is the second great depression just like those people who have supposedly stopped looking for work haven’t stopped they just ran out of unemployment so the government labels them discouraged so as to suggest they are to blame.

It’s cool, Obama’s in charge and he knows a lot about economics. Greenspan, Bernanke and Geithner taught him everything he needs to know. You know, the fellas that made sure we marched over the cliff in perfect formation? those guys? ya know? Don’t worry about it, get yer shot.
