Brooklyn Residents In Fear Of Looters Pretending To Be FEMA Workers

Criminals holding up residents in their own homes at Gunpoint

Residents of neighborhoods in Brooklyn say they are worried about looters running riot in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and that they may knock on doors disguised as emergency workers.

Without power and already witnessing looting at local stores, residents of Gerritsen Beach told WNBC reporter Lynda Baquero that they are very wary of anyone claiming to be emergency responders.

“As much as we need the utility workers, we don’t know if we can trust them or not.” one resident said.

FEMA acknowledges that during previous storms, scam artists have posed as representatives of the agency in order to get inside homes and businesses to rob them.

Reports have begun to filter in today of looters robbing homes while posing as Con Ed workers.

“This morning when they told us the water receded, I walked back to the house to feed [my pets],” said Eric Martine, 33, a cabby who lives in Gerritsen Beach. “Guys were looting, pretending they were Con Ed and holding people up. It was sick.”

Residents have taken to Twitter to warn others. One Williamsburg resident tweeted: “WARNING: in Williamsburg people posing as Con Edison workers and knocking on doors DO NOT answer they just robbed someone at gunpoint.”

Banks, pharmacies and other stores in Manhattan and homes in Coney Island have also reportedly been heavily looted.

As we have reported, some declared their intentions to loot on Twitter prior to the storm, and have even displayed their hauls on the social media site, promising to carry out more looting today.

The corporate media dismissed the tweets as “jokes,” while bizarrely claiming that looting in the aftermath of storms is not a common occurrence, despite FEMA itself issuing warnings that such criminal activity has been routine following hurricanes over the past few years.

FEMA has said that it is preparing for Sandy to disrupt next week’s elections. The agency has come under fire, however, for directing storm victims without any power to the internet for guidelines on what to do.

This did not prevent the New York Times from extolling the agency’s virtues yesterday in an op Ed piece titled “A Big Storm Requires Big Government.”

NBC host Matt Lauer also claimed in a report this morning that residents in a Queens neighborhood were practically begging for help from FEMA.
