Broward County is so concerned with the health of travelers passing through Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, it might seek to have the security body scanners banned until they’re proven safe — a move made just weeks ago in Europe.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood would be the first major airport in the United States to approve such a ban in the wake of Europe’s decision.
Broward Mayor John Rodstrom, a frequent flier making sometimes four trips a week for his job in the bond industry, said he didn’t think the “Europeans took that action lightly,” and he pushed for a Broward County Commission vote to request that the Transportation Security Administration stop using its “backscatter” scanners here until safety can be ensured. The vote is Tuesday.
Rodstrom avoids the scanners, which emit low-level radiation, and always opts for a pat-down, he said.
