In Feb. 2008, a military judge convicted Sgt. Evan Vela, a 24-year-old U.S. Army sniper, “and sentenced him to 10 years in prison for killing an Iraqi civilian who wandered into the hiding place where six soldiers were sleeping.” Vela, who was sentenced to a dishonorable discharge, was found guilty of planting an AK-47 on the dead Iraqi man’s body and of lying to military investigators about the shooting. According to a letter sent by the White House to Vela’s family, President Bush is now “strongly considering” a request to pardon Vela:
The father of an eastern Idaho soldier says he has received a letter from the White House confirming that his request that his son be pardoned by President Bush is being “seriously considered.”Curtis Carnahan says he received the letter last week.
Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) have written letters to Bush on behalf of Vela, urging that the president grant him clemency. Crapo and Simpson argued that Vela “was simply following the orders of his superiors.”

Following orders is a lame excuse for doing anything.
January 6th, 2009 at 7:05 am
They should use that excuse…it’s the same one the Nazi’s used..since the US military is so much like the Nazis in every other way.

If you don’t want to arrest and prosecute Bush…you shouldn’t go after the soldiers either…having said that…eventually, the international community will judge you all…

I would have shot him. It’s war Bush is the reason they are there. He should let hem go. Remember Caley LBJ was to blame they were to kill them all. That was there orders.

It is just like what Bill Hicks says, that the world is like it is because the good people allow the demons to run amuck. Do you think its any difference for americans who kill their own countrymen under the guise of maintaining security. You must get your family out of the US while there is still time. I moved to Costa Rica and am extremely happy with my choice.
I can help you–if you act now

He was “convicted” for “planting” the AK47, not the shooting. That is what he was ordered to do. Some of you idiots need to take a reading comprehension class to help prevent the writers from planting false beliefs in your pathetic heads. Of course being true idiots, the classes wouldn’t help anyway.
He shot the man which was at the time and under the circumstance the right choice. There is little doubt had his so called “superiors” ordered the gun to be planted in order to make it easier for them to send out a routine report and not to benefit the Soldier, this whole thing would have been reviewe properly and ruled as justified. It was the dipshit lazy officer who for selfish reasons of a report conceived and ordered a “crime” in the coverup.

Perhaps Bush aught to hurry up and Pardon himself in advance to save him having to wriggle out of being judged a mass murderer in the future.
I expect he has a pardon ‘up his sleeve’ should the feathers ever hit the fan on that ‘one’.

Perhaps Bush aught to hurry up and give himself a pardon should he ever be charge for mass murder in an illegal war.
He has a few days left to keep that Pardon up his sleeve should the feathers ever hit the fan on that little problem.

I don’t blame him at all.. As a Marine we would have done the same thing but it wouldn’t have been made public.. If a guy walks up and catches you sleeping you instantly think its the enemy.. Were trained to kill instantly ask questions later. Supposed that guy had a grenade he could have taken out all of those guys.. He did the right thing he believed he was saving himself and his brothers.. But the Marines are a lot different then the army.. We kill if we feel threatened and theres no investigation.. shouldn’t be either.. we are trained to ask questions later.. I would rather be JUDGED BY TWELVE THEN CARRIED BY SIX ANYDAY. All you people that say he should be in trouble blah blah.. Go to your nearest recruiter and sign up for infantry and then tell me when you get back from a tour.. you wouldn’t shoot a arab guy walking up announced and startled you.. especially a sniper team
