President George W. Bush won final congressional approval on Wednesday of liability protection for telecommunication companies that took part in the warrantless domestic spying program he began after the September 11 attacks.
The bill would shield these firms from potentially billions of dollars in damages from privacy lawsuits and implement the biggest overhaul of U.S. spy laws in three decades.
On a vote of 69-28, the Senate approved the measure, previously passed by the House of Representatives, and prepared to send the legislation to Bush to sign into law.
With Bush’s term set to end in January, the vote marked perhaps one his final major triumphs on Capitol Hill and drew a firestorm of criticism from civil liberties groups.
(Article continues below)
The measure would replace a temporary spy law that expired in February and modernize the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, to keep pace with changing technology.
It would also bolster judicial and congressional oversight of U.S. surveillance of foreign targets and increase protection of civil liberties of law-abiding Americans swept up in such spy efforts — but not as much as critics charge is needed.

A VERY VERY VERY sad day for Liberty!
It’s amazing how easy Bush has been getting his way.

I can not believe that the American people are letting this happen. Our rights are being taken away everyday.
Bush has committed felonies by ordering telecoms to spy without court orders and now changed the law to make what he did not a felony.
This is crazy and I cannot believe that democrats and republicans signed this bill. Only 28 people didnt sign it.
It has not been fully explained why this bill was even necessary to the public. All they say is well terrorists need to be spyed on.
You can tell this whole terrorism thing is a farce as they could care less about our open borders yet they need to listen to the American peoples phone calls?
If terrorists were actually trying to attack us all they would have to do was to come thru mexico…it is wide open.

Kick them all out, all who voted for this rape of our constitution.

Let’s review:
USA Patriot Act
War Commissions Act
John Warner Defense Act
The FISA Act
It’s clear that our rights have been completely eradicated. Mission Accomplished by the shadow elite. Now comes the fun part. Next step is the annihilation of our economy. Our currency is worthless and we can’t even make interest payments on our debt. They are going to absorb (take) your capital away from you and you will have no method to feed yourself or your family. Then they will kill you or round you up and put you into KBR detention facilities for rioting in the streets because you’re starving to death. About that time the virus will be released and the shadows will slither away to their deep underground military bases while we attempt to survive on the surface. Great plot line for a movie. I hope I’m wrong, but be prepared anyway you can.

I am not surprised that CFR/Bilderberg Obama voted in favor of this bill. This is a sad day in America and the sheep are still sleeping. What is it going to take?
July 9th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
69 to 28, guess that proves who congress is working for.
Thanks Obama, you call that change? Another false candidate.
Hillary Clinton voted against it.
Looks like all the Obama follower fools are going to be betrayed.

It legalized what they were already illegally doing, only now they can do even more.

Unfortunately, this world has no hope as long as we are looking to current so-called ‘leaders’ to lead us. We don’t need to be led. We need to start leading ourselves —- AWAY from the lunatic, insane world controllers of today.

DEEP RED: I heard that poor excuse for a human being like it or leave it BS. You throw your car away when it breaks? Or do you try to fix it?

how can people just sit idly while our government is taking our rights and freedoms away on a daily basis. george bush and his administration should all be put on trial for their actions, not just toward us but for everybody whose rights he has jeopardized, here or elsewhere on this planet.

all channels of citizen input are controlled by the powers that be. THEY (as in THEY LIVE!) control the puppet executive branch, that appoint judges to the judiciary, and THEY fund the campaigns of those THEY select to run for office and THEY control the media that spins TV news and newspapers. where can the people, slaving away at their jobs, have any input? call your congressman? who will HE respond to, YOU or THEY, the ones who will fund his re-election, control the reporting, and spin the news about him?

Tommorow i’m going into AT&T and breaking my 2 year cell phone agreement with them. They’ll try to pop me for the 150.00 broken agreement fee, and I’ll tell them that I will refuse to pay that because of what they and the other telecom companies did by selling out our privacy for their own selfish greed, fed by our taxes of course. I’m going off the grid, gonna buy a mickey mouse phone and pay for the minutes as I go. Make it a little harder for Big Brother to keep tabs on us law abiding citizens.

“If there is no struggle, there is no progress…This struggle may be a moral one or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both.”
-Frederick Douglass
