  • Call to suspend ‘whole-body imaging’ at airports

Privacy advocates plan to call on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to suspend use of “whole-body imaging,” the airport security technology that critics say performs “a virtual strip search” and produces “naked” pictures of passengers, CNN has learned.

The national campaign, which will gather signatures from organizations and relevant professionals, is set to launch this week with the hope that it will go “viral,” said Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which plans to lead the charge.

“People need to know what’s happening, with no sugar-coating and no spinning,” said Coney, who is also coordinator of the Privacy Coalition, a conglomerate of 42 member organizations. She expects other groups to sign on in the push for the technology’s suspension until privacy safeguards are in place.

Right now, without regulations on what the Transportation Security Administration does with this technology, she said, “We don’t have the policy to hold them to what they say. They’re writing their own rule book at this point.”

The machines “detect both metallic and nonmetallic threat items to keep passengers safe,” said Kristin Lee, spokeswoman for TSA, in a written statement. “It is proven technology, and we are highly confident in its detection capability.”

When children go through this scanner the TSA agents will be charged with child pornography violations, right?

In 1997 NORAD said, “Aircraft flying over our air space are monitored seven days a week, 24 hours a day.”

The quote above is contradicted by the following 2008 quote from NORAD, “Since the tragic events of 9/11, NORADs role which previously was outward-looking now includes monitoring airspace within North America.”

Is this not the very definition of invasion of privacy?

This is the same as you are assumed guilty until we prove you are innocent and without any probable cause!

    7. cooper Says:

It is totally unnecessary and a gross intrusion into our privacy. Just think of all the perverts who will want the jobs of viewing the virtual strip search computers. I imagine TSA will not have a problem of people showing up for work. It is sickening.

Fill the planes with all very large people, every flight, all the time. Have the organizations give away free round-trip tickets for those passengers for travel inside the U.S.A. only. The government DHS and TSA agents want to see something, they want to oogle someone. Let them see it all baby,is what I say. This technology will end quickly enough, and without too much complaints, or opposition from TSA agents. They will even volunteer to dismantle it themselves. Now that is what I call a peaceful civil protest, by every American that wants to help their country. Keep its privacy safe from government invasion of this sort. I don’t think the TSA agents will want to work there for very long. It will be hard to keep employees. hehehe

    9. bree Says:

OK! Let’s all just go to the airport naked. Go everywhere naked. That will also end the extra baggage fees. Problem over. hehehhehe

      janine Reply:

Oh so True 100%. Might as well, if this is what they want to do to us. We just might as well be naked 24/7. Hey government, now we need some more new technology, maybe next it will be in every building on the planet. Nazi Germany, here we come!

    10. guy fox Says:

hell no we won’t take it!! thats right people,!! the tide has turned in the battle, freedom , truth, power to the people, stand and fight!!!! time to get some fury into this !!yaaaaaa!

    11. janine Says:

Reasons like this are why I never fly anymore. I have flown several places in my past. I have been to places like Australia, Las Vegas, LA, Houston, Chicago, New Zealand, Caribbean, Puerto Rico, and almost every state east of the Mississippi. After TSA took over, I flew to Florida. I did not like my invasion of privacy being infringed at all. So if I can’t drive there, I stay at home. I will never go back through a TSA checkpoint ever again. Now this machine is the height of invasion of privacy to every American. This is absolutely going too far people. This is like giving a peeping-tom a license to oogle everyone that goes though that checkpoint. Anyone for a live porn show job, the perverts will be flocking like flys to this TSA job. Then we will all be in for even bigger problems. This machine is like saying it is just fine, as long as it is legal, from the word of the powers that be, to allow this form of voyeurism. Just as long as the government DHS and TSA are in charge of it. I don’t know about the rest of you, but this is just wrong in so many ways. It is too much information as the young kids say now-a-days. It is UnConstitutional.

    12. Benjamin Napier Says:

More important, in the big scheme of things, is: what sort of radiation are they using and how much? Some sort of energy is being used to penetrate the clothing, what effect does it have on living tissue. How much are we getting and how often? The Nuclear Regulatory Commission had dosimetry and recording requirements for ionizing radiation. Folks are generally kept out of microwave ovens.

Again I ask, what sort of radiation is being used and how much? This, besides being a completely useless and intrusice violation of my right to privacy, might well be a serious health risk.

And the sheeple continue to walk into the ovens.

    13. danthemanwillstand4U Says:

don’t bout you all, but you can see more than I would be willing to show. will they have a (fuzzy area) in the private area, cause you can still see it. Look at the full article, on image two diffidently shows that the person is male. I think I will still to driving to where I need to go, or just stay home. Also as for as children, we already have issues with the airports hiring people of ill repute, ever had your bags rifled through and stuff taken? if they can have those people working for them (airports) then would it not be right to say they could have a child porno pervert in there mitts? Save the children save our selves. SOS!!!
