Cameron: Schools should promote elitism

The Prime Minister said today that discipline, rigour and ‘elitism’ must prevail in Britain’s schools to mend our ‘broken society’ and ensure the UK produces more winners.

The riots that swept across England last month show urgent classroom reforms are required to produce a new generation of ‘good citizens’, Mr Cameron said.

Tens of thousands of teenagers are leaving school without the right qualifications under the current schools system, the Prime Minister warned.

The introduction of the English Baccalaureate has meant that the proportion of pupils who are studying history, geography, a language and three sciences at GCSE is increasing this year, Mr Cameron said.

And the review of the national curriculum will see pupils focus on subjects like algebra, the ‘essential laws of science’ and the great works of English literature.
