HOUSTON — With a war in Iraq and fighting on the rise in Afghanistan, the struggle to bring in new U.S. Army recruits is heating up again.
And Irving Gonzales, 18, got caught up in it all.
As his family’s oldest male, he feels he has to do whatever it takes to help out his single mom. For him, that means working long hours at his after-school job.
“My mom was left struggling. I would give her more than half my paycheck,” Gonzales said.

That’s why the Aldine High School senior started thinking about the Army – and the tens of thousands of dollars in bonuses that can come with enlistment.
“They were offering me school, they were offering me bonuses,” he said.
So Gonzales signed up – but only to “pre-enlist” in the Delayed Entry Program. DEP allows kids to try out the military without a binding commitment.
But the 11 News Defenders have found there is a problem: Army recruiters aren’t sticking to the program and are bullying and even lying to potential recruits and their families to keep them from dropping out.
After he had a change of heart, Gonzalez became one such victim.
“I’d rather just stay here, go to college,” he said he told his recruiter.
The reaction: Gonzalez said a recruiter told him if he did drop out, they would send him to jail.

Bullshit. That has to be staged. I don’t know one army recruiter that would threaten anybody, and I’ve known quite a few. Alex, a lot of the things on your websites are true and relevant, but you need to stop this fear bullshit. The majority of Army Soldiers are not Nazis, asshole, I happen to serve. I’m sick of the way you portray almost every Soldier as a criminal by association with the U.S. government. We are slaves too, just useful slaves.
And instead of spreading fear, you should be publising articels maybe on how to beat the Military, because I gaurantee whatever happens, 50,000 civilians don’t stand a chance against 200 Infantry or Marines.
Most of us are poor too, just hard honest workers. The Army gives a chance. I have 3 meals a day, a steady paycheck, and always a job and place to rest my head. Sad as it may be that I need to turn to the Military for that, it is the truth and nothing can change it.
True change will come from the military. WE WILL change this. You civilians will thump your chests all patriotically and then hide when the fireworks are lit. Gauran-fucking-teed.

useless, he doesnt blame troops/recruiters, and our military has been corrupt for over 100 years, so u blame alex for not citing ways on how to overthrow it? not a viablle point
and he does say in one of his docs. that most troops have no idea of the big picture, and he claims most of you are stand up people who want to do good, just you sir, feel the need to blast alex because his site has a summary and link of something that i wouldnt doubt did happen, his first? post has valid points, but if the article is correct, then imo he was mislead, banks to it, crediters, schools, so since the military has a “binding agreement” doesnt mean they dont lie. people are known to use thier knowledge to outsmart people who are less informed

And, if the is true, this Capital Quitter of Life that this article is writting about should have read his contract more carefully. A contract you sign with the United States Armed Forces is legally binding contract. You don’t decide you don’t want to do it after the fact.
The DEP is just what you are under until you go to Basic Combat Training. The DEP is not an Army recess to see “if you like it or not”. It is to get you ready for what to expect at BCT and beyond. Everyone starts out in DEP; National Guardsmen start out in Recruit Sustainment. He should have researched as much as possible before signing that contract. The Army is serious business when it comes to that stuff. He is obviously too smart or just a quitter. And the Army gets plenty of both sometimes. Luckily, they usually find a way to shitcan their way out so they don’t get other good men killed later.
Do the research Alex Jones before you scare or piss people off.

actually useless, you sound like you are full of shit……I entered the DEP in the Marines, when I was 17….So tell me how I signed a legally binding contract with the government at the “under” age of 17…….It is not a binding contract, and yes most recruiters are just used car salesmen….they dont give a damn about the recruits or there wants, and needs. All they see is the quota numbers……so do some research, and for fucks sake mix in a spell check and some proof reeading, before you get on this thread to spew your MIC propaganda bullshit……and in case you are going to try a rebutte this, look it up on the army’s own webpage, the DEP is not a binding contract, not until you actually got to MEPPS and swear in, are you a federal employee…..geez what a tool

Well, that’s kinda the point of recruiting young people – when they’re young and basically stupid enough not to understand what it is that they’re signing, not? It wouldn’t even really work otherwise, would it? Besides – how many kids of that age group do anykind of research on anything?
You have to be one conditioned individual to even consider signing it – or just too desperate in some unfortunate way – or a bit of both…
However, once you have the NAU, there’ll be plenty of desperate, uneducated poor people ready to sign anything that’ll give them an opportunity to get out of where they’re now.

Oh, and you don’t know one army recruiter that would threaten anybody. Even though 11 news has investigated this more then you have, it must be a lie because you say so. Even though they have tape recordings of the threats and copies of the DEP Army regulations (under no circumstances will any (recruiter) threaten, coerce, manipulate, or intimidate (future soldiers), nor may they obstruct separation requests) – none of that is correct because YOU say so.
As far as I’m concerned, you can ram your jackboot right up your ass.

Man this doesn’t surprise me at All. The USMC does treat DEP like some kind of preparing program for BCT, but it doesn’t doesn’t actually bind you permanently in.. it depends on how far you take the process and how many papers you sign. You can sign one or two and be cool but once you get shipped to take your ‘vaccines’ and get your hair cut, you’re stuck in there. Don’t sign in that far if you’re still making up your mind. The truth is, the military is very appealing to all struggling men that have a decent body. And that’s exactly what it’s supposed to be like. The problem is that once in the military, you lose your ability to make choices… you sell your self to them. Going against their wishs could get you killed to be honest.

DEP is NOT binding for the simple reason that, in legal terms, the military has not, during that time, given the DEP-member anything “in consideration” – meaning money.

And people in pajamas ”Civilians” do pretty well against Infantry and Marines, Read your history, and watch the news. heres the problem with them not having enough recruits for the military, they make basic training such a living hell. why would anyone seroisly want to go thru with that. if they want people to join they need to ease up on the basic. i dont even like doing that shit in video games. my best friend joined the air force and i warned him basic is gonna be absolute hell man. he said “No it wont blaa blaaa its air force it will be easy” well a few weeks later he calls me and tells me hes in 319 in a bed because he has stress fractures in his legs. lol so they fluroudate the hell out of us, weaken our bones to crackers then run em 6 miles a day? of course your gonna get broken legs! thats your loving governtment for ya. now my friend is getting a discharge out of the air force and im happy for him. still trying to wake him up to the nwo he still calls me conspiracy theorist. but hes buying the whole fluoride thing now.

Hank, that is absolute crap. I’ve run MORE than 6 miles on the Army side. Obviously, your friend couldn’t hack it. IT IS NOT THAT HARD!!! He did 6 weeks. I did 14 as an Infantryman. Marines do 13, I think.
So many people have done it (Basic Training) and more will continue to do so. Some just can’t hack it.

The physical part of Basic Training in the Air Force is no different from your average football summer practice. It was a joke and I breezed through it. You spend more time sitting on your a$$ doing paper work and studying military rules and regulations than you do exercize which is only 1 hour a day 6 days a week and you only run ever other day.

I went in fully understanding what I was doing and what I wanted to do. I got the job I wanted, left when I wanted and got out when I wanted. It’s not hard.
It’s simple common knowledge. Don’t sign anything unless you read and understand what you are signing. It’s a shame but many fools and ignorant people get suckered into the military simply becasue they are just that, stupid.

I went in fully understanding I should read the actual story before posting comments and responses. I read the article, understood the information, and posted a relevant, accurate response. It’s not hard.
It’s simple common knowledge. Your experience in the military isn’t necessarily relevant to the issue of what happened to this young man, and the story specifically states that he did read and understand what he signed but was lied to by the military recruiter. It’s a shame but many fools and ignorant people see a story online and can’t be bothered to actually read it, but instead see it as an opportunity to post about their own personal experience even though it’s irrelevant because they are just that, stupid.

Well, let me answer it for you. It isn’t because of stories like this. It’s because the military takes orders from criminals. Plain and simple. They rarely question the orders, much less don’t follow them. And the only thing the military protects is the ruling elite’s right to do whatever the fuck they want. And that includes murdering you, as a soldier. You don’t defend anyone’s freedom. You intimidate and murder people for a banana republic and its kangaroo courts. You don’t protect the homeland. You are paid killers and you do and will follow orders or face dire consequences. You will kill anyone you’re told to kill. Whether it’s brown skinned people in the middle east or your own citizens right here at home.
And how do the criminals “support the troops?” Well, there’s obviously massive evidence that supports the case that THEY don’t give a shit about you. And still you follow THEIR orders. Now that’s insanity.

The DEP is a legal, binding contract. When the recruit signs the DEP Enlistment Contract, he/she is legally agreeing to the following:
Paragraph 8a of the Enlistment Contract: “FOR ENLISTMENT IN THE DELAYED ENTRY/ENLISTMENT PROGRAM (DEP): I understand that I will be ordered to active duty as a Reservist unless I report to the place shown in item 4 above by (date) for enlistment in the regular component of the United States (branch of service).”

One cannot serve in the military without taking the “oath of office” which is given just before you board the plane (usually).
This kid didn’t take any such oath; therefore, he cannot be employed as a federal soldier.

That small point aside- I’m glad that this kid, and others have the opportunity to realize (as you still living within the smoke and haze) that life is, has always been, and will continue to be: with the threat of physical injury as the main motivator (and end motivator) of control.
I wonder what would have happened had the story continued, “Irving, shocked at the intimidation and threats then called his buddies, his cousins and his classmates. Within 20 minutes a small mob of local teenagers then wound the flagpole’s rope around the necks of the recruited and raised them until death.

Many soldiers’ deaths due to friendly fire are largely to blame on those who think they are superior to everyone else to include ‘indestructible’. Don’t shoot the messenger – looks like PP is simply showing what was presented in local news as part of an investigative report – Army Recruiting Scandal.
This is nothing new (recruiters have always been on the asshole side, making up anything under the sun to get quotas) – but perhaps getting worse. Many guys I knew in recruiting were “running away” from jobs they could no longer deal with. And/or found a way to remain stateside, some getting gigs in their hometowns. Recruiting sucks, just like a sack load of other military jobs.
And yes, I am a former GI.
Truly disappointed with the state of the military and country. GI’s raping, murdering (including a record number of female GI’s) in the name of what? A corrupt, depraved system that has been hijacked by criminals of the highest order. Many of the GI’s today (a bunch of brainwashed misfits) and cops will gladly turn a rifle or taser gun on their fellow citizen. We saw all of the highlights during Katrina.
Let’s restore order, dignity, honor to our military and a commitment to uphold the Constitution and repel those who go against it!!

The “IQ” kinda tests they have in the military are not meant to measure anyone’s intelligence – they’re meant purely for psychological evaluation and to determine how likely you are to follow orders. Scoring high points there means you’re likely to be used & brainwashed easier than the average person and that is exactly what they want – order following, no-question-asking robots. The more conditioned you are, the more likely you are to get high scores there, which again could explain the points “Useless” said he got.

How can you win a war if your soldier go to war to get a decent paycheck?? in times your enemy fights for no paycheck in return rather he fight to free his land from the invaders. Through out the History no Invading Army ever won forever. If America was attacked for real, I know that thousands of Americans would be willing to sacrifice their lives to kick the invader out for no rewards other than freedome. just like when they fought against the British and the spanish. I really think this happened. I was in the military and still work around them today – oversea’s. I know the in’s and out’s of the military way of life.
Recruiters, yes, have quota’s that they got to fill. Hey it’s extra money. Who doesn’t want extra money??
If they (the recruiters) think that their losing someone who does not know much about the military they will tell them anything to keep them from not going.

I refused to take the ASVAB. And will refuse the physical if they force it. I believe in education of people, not killing them. Its easy to go to war, but not easy to stop it. If we listened to Iraq’s people, maybe we can avoid attacks in the future. Bush fouled up by attacking Iraq, and now we must pay for it. No wonder many do not pay taxes as they go to useless things.
