China cracks down on ‘vulgar’ foreign television

Chinese satellite channels have been banned from importing more than one foreign television series each year as Beijing attempts to remove trash from its television screens, state media reported on Monday.

Leaked government directives showed that China’s media watchdog, the SGAPPRFT, had decided that as of 2014 broadcasters would have to radically cut the amount of international programming they air.

Satellite stations will also be obliged to broadcast a greater number of educational, documentary and public-interest programs under the new rules, which were published by the Southern Metropolis newspaper.

The measures were intended to help push more domestically produced “morality-building programs” onto the air and limit the number of “reality” shows being shown.
