A Northwest Airlines plane has made an emergency landing in Nashville after the pilot found a suspicious package, which turned out to contain a harmless Christmas ornament.
Flight 2364, headed from Detroit in the Midwest region of the United States to Orlando in Florida, landed at Nashville International Airport in the US state of Tennessee at about 8 a.m. local time (1400 GMT).
The 75 passengers and five crew members aboard were evacuated, rescreened and allowed to re-board about two hours later after dogs and a bomb unit searched the plane.
Carlos Santos, the Spokesman for Delta Air Lines which owns Northwest Airlines, was not sure who found the package midway through the flight to Orlando, Fla., or why they thought it was suspicious. He says the flight was diverted “out of an abundance of caution.”
The plane made it to Orlando International Airport before 1 p.m. (1800 GMT).
The incident comes exactly one week after Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a Nigerian student with alleged links to al-Qaeda, tried to detonate explosives on a Northwest Airlines flight, before the US jetliner landed in Detroit, on a trip from Amsterdam. Abdulmutallab began his journey in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos.
