City defends ’secret jail’ built for DNC

DENVER – Activist groups say the converted warehouse poses a threat to civil liberties. The city maintains the facility is needed in case of mass arrests during the Democratic National Convention.
The makeshift holding center, dubbed “Gitmo on the Platte” by activists, is located on city-owned property near Steele Street and 38th Avenue. Newly-installed security cameras guard the exterior, chain-link fences and barbed wire form cells inside.

“We feel the city should be ashamed of this secret prison they’ve set up,” said Re-create ‘68 organizer Glenn Spagnuolo.
Spagnuolo and other activists gathered outside the formerly-secret facility on Friday to protest the city’s plan to use it as a processing center for all those arrested outside the DNC.
“The public was never going to view this place, it was just found out,” Spagnuolo said. “They got caught with this place. They told our lawyers in negotiations that this place didn’t even exist.”
“This was never a secret site,” said Undersheriff Bill Lovingier, the city’s director of corrections.
Lovingier said the city had long planned to build a new holding facility for the DNC, which triples the processing speed of the city jail. Lovingier said the Steele Street warehouse will be able to process 60 arrestees an hour.

The cop refers to whats in the jail as “amenities,” like he’s trying to sell a cute rental opportunity on the lower east side. Toilets and Water, well gee thanks, wouldn’t want to trouble you for anything. Medical attention!!! Yeah to undo all the damage done by police. The cop with a bat or tazer, right next to the cop with a med kit. “I’m gonna bash you in the head, but I promise to get a bandaid on that right away.” Think of what would happen if someone were to die in there, for whatever reason, think of how that would sound.

The protesters are protesting that they are about to be rounded up and jailed outside the jail where they will be brought when they are protesting.
Good for them. Sometimes it’s beneficial to plan ahead.

Funny, isn’t it. The Republicans have had a two-term president, but it’s outside the Democratic convention that riots are expected. Something is wrong with this picture, but americans tend to be too close to notice the paradox.
The answer lies with the inherent phoniness of the two-party system. Of course we’ve reached the point in the West where the pretence of differences between the two parties has been dropped. Obama nad Blair are proud to announce themselves as vast better war mongers that the supposed right-wingers they replace(d).
The anglo-saxon two party system never was a democratic mechanism for the ordinary people, and hence never had a design to give such people any kind of choice. When our masters felt that it was time for ‘left-leaning’ policies, they placed the Labour/Democratic party in power. When they needed ‘right-leaning’ changes, they swapped to the Conservatives/Republicans. Neither party was ever supposed to be meeting the needs of ordinary people. To our masters, the parties of the right and left exist for the same reason you have a hot and cold tap over your sinks.

Free speech is still allowed, but you must be behind a fence at a sufficient distance so that it has no effect. In essence? Speech that cannot be heard. Speech that does not annoy those who most need to hear it.

I wonder it is regal to built concentration camps. That reminds me of what happened to Japanese immigrants during WWII. Just like what Nazis did to Jews and other dissidents in Germany, the US government took all the property from the Japanese. After the war, they left the camp with nothing. One of them owned a hotel in San Francisco, and some owened farms in Califronia.
After the arrest of people, will the US government take their propaties away?

Could you guys get any more dramatic? Having a contingency plan in case of mass arrests kind of makes sense. Here’s an idea…don’t do anything to get arrested. Last i checked, the cops don’t (generally…i won’t act like there are no bad cops) make much of a habit out of arresting PEACEFUL protesters. It’s kind of a waste of their time.

I heard that they will be closing down I-25 (the main interstate that runs through Denver) during the DNC. If they do this, there’s going to be some massive transportation/traffic disruption. But, what do they care? It seems to me that they’re just flexing their muscle, saying “yes, we are in control, and do whatever we want to.”

brian- Beg to differ, at start of Iraq war,in D.C. the non-violent protesters were systematically rounded up like cattle and put into holding cells, some people not getting out for quite some time..Lawsuits later, justice was (kinda) served with cash penalties to the D.c. Police, Park Police and Co., but I don’t think it will deter policy, as they have printing presses that allow them to have as much money as they need…Solution?? Two paths I can see offhand, the way of MLK,Gandhi, huge overpowering nonviolent masses motivated by a charismatic spiritual leader, or “The Battle Of Los Angeles”, post Rodney king rioting leading to extreme doubt of Western Civilization and the subsequent Election loss of GWB, Sr…The latter is more likely, given the media’s emphasis on cagefighting and applied violence (to prep us to fight their wars) planted into youth’s minds, and the shear rage against the totally corrupt system…

That’s exactly what this is for, to round up people like cattle and shut them up mighty quick. They have trained the younger generation into thinking you can’t protest. That’s because in this country you don’t get an education on your Constitution or your Civil Rights. You would have to learn that for yourself or just believe what your Government tells you. And it gets easier for them with every new uneducated generation. That’s why they are scared of Ron Paul Jesse Ventura. So it’s up to all parents who are themselfs educated and the rest of us to teach the new generation about the Constitution and Civil Rights. We at least owe that much to the people who died protecting these things.

respect life, I should correct one part of your post. Azerbaijan is a internationally recognized nation under no threat of being pulled into Georgia. I think you meant to say Abkhazia which has been in defacto independance from Georgia, but not internationally recognized.

This is very troubling. What are people going to be arrested for? Exercising their right of assembly and free speech? Is it now against the law to ask our elected representatives and other officials to be held accountable, act in a responsible way and obey the law themselves? Is it against the law to peacefully protest outside of a, so called, free speech zone? That’s a bizarre concept in itself. I thought the entire country was, more or less, a free speech zone. Looks like it’s much less now and that’s really a shame. We deserve better. We can be better … at least I hope so.

I am not sure what to think anymore. I am shocked and I am loss of words of this. The whole prison deal, meaning to round us up and put us all away. Its out of a movie set. Like the movie, where the kids end of fighting this war between U.S and Cuba and Russian troops had been staging in Cuba or something to that effect. Anyhow its the same thing. But fema camps..I have not seen pictures of this yet..But I shall look around on the internet for it.
