Diane,
I have to disagree with you. Since when is it the government's job to legislate/dictate morals and behavior. Anyone who supports this kind of legislation is only contributing to a system that works against them.

People don't like to be meddled with. You can't force someone to stop believing something that has been drilled into their head their entire lives. All you can do is educate them and see if they have a change of mind/heart. Legislation is not education it is force (in this case.) All this will do is create a greater rift between the gay and straight communities. It is a classic divide and conquer scheme.

In case you are wondering, I too am gay. I too have to agree with MM. Sometimes you just want to tell the flamers to tone it down. Not because they are gay but because they are obnoxious. There is nothing more irritating to me than watching a sterotype and then having someone judge me based on that type of behaviour.

Excellent work Alex and crew.

So "precinct" is the new pc term for "ghetto." Hm- live & learn.
At first I thought, "Wow, how cool would it be if..." and then I started reading the comments, and thought it through again, a little more thoroughly. I think the effectiveness will depend on how it's implemented, and I've only read the first part without having checked the link.
Living in the states, I know what a joke the "drug-free zone" signs are; and, having been on the receiving end of homophobia, much of it before I had any idea it might apply to me... well, it's no joke.
Anyone who thinks it is should ask Matthew Shepard- oh, that's right... homophobia made sure that'll never happen. Not to mention all the cases that either have not gone that far, or have been hush-shush-brushed under the (sh)rug. How many names will the world never know thanks to homophobia? Is that why I'm still single, because the guy I was supposed to spend my life with, the guy I never had a chance to meet, is dead?
It doesn't stop there... not every incident of homophobia results in death. Sometimes, it's the catalyst for the victim's suicide- oh, wait, that's death, too.
Anyone who's ever applied a window decal/sticker/tint-treatment knows that poking the air pockets doesn't get rid of them, it just moves them around. It's not until one squeegees the whole thing that one has a chance of, if not eliminating all, at least rendering manageable those fewer and much diminished bubbles of trouble. Sadly, I have no idea what that metaphoric squeegee should be in this instance.

Un...l e s s... here's another thought: How about making *legal* chambers (those of lawmakers *AND* judges), and *police* "precincts" homophobia-free zones? Maybe when "authority figures" stop setting a tacit example, we might-
(Yeah, and someday, we might have cars that fold into briefcases.)
Ideally, yes, it should be dealt with when it happens, where it happens, and how it happens. Why it happens, and who it happens to are not going to go away. At least no time soon, and whether or not we have a "Homo Haven."
Try looking at it this way- it's better than just sitting back, watching it happen, and doing nothing. You do know you can't have it both ways, right? It may not be the RIGHT thing, but at least SOMEthing is being tried.

Trent Falcon,

Trent you are not a bible reader, so how can you ask such a question? If you've read the bible you see endless times where god commanded his followers to go kill, or he did it himself. Dispute that. If the god one believes in is evil, that person is more likely to be amoral or just plain evil. Trent, your comment was made in a warm-hearted fashion and I appreciate that, but to give cover for evil is evil and the religions (at least the major 3) are evil. I certainly don't hate you Trent, but I will do whatever I can to wake you up and help yor realize that this stuff is nonsense...and the jesus charactor never existed...stop believing what you are told and do your own research. I hope to hear from you again at some point...have a great day buddy. Trent, one last thing is a murderer who walks a little old lady across the street good? The point being that just because religiion does a few good things, or that there are some good misinformed people who belong to it doesn't mean religion is good.

Volcanic...the difference is I haven't made a god out of it...or said that god says it's so. It's not people I hate(and call it love, as do religious people)...if I did I wouldn't express my displeasure with the nonsense of religious folks...I would just avoid them. To seek dialogue is to seek understanding...Perhaps seeking dialogue with the people who have lost their minds to religion is a total waste of time, as I suppose it is. But, on the other hand...people need to see that religion is a purnicious (sp) activity. I have, a long time ago, examined my frustration with religion ...it's based in the fact that I do care about people and see religion as a great danger. Oh, and Volcanic if you think time will bring justice to these people you certainly don't know anything about history...look at all the despots who escaped trials. And thanks for your time and input, whether or not I agree you have put in some of you life's time to respond and that I appreciate. Turning a blind eye to religion is the same as ignoring cancer.

MM...you certain don't speak for gay people "take them down a couple of notches" is code for take something away. What would you suggest MM? The right to eat? MM when you say 'them' it means you either hate yourself or you aren't gay and a liar instead. Can you tell the truth now? Which is it?

Anon...Diane's a complete schill? Really? And you are aginst treating people fairly? Nazi...

I'm gay and not in favor of this type of treatment. Being coddled by the government with emphasis on special zones and signs only wastes money, restricts free speech, and sets a precedent that shouldn't exist in any country. I'm sorry, but protecting the freedom to say whatever you want doesn't end just because some people verbalize their hatred toward others. As much as I will never condone unjustified, hateful words and actions against others, I will protect their right to express themselves freely. What's next? Anti fat-bashing zones?

Even I have an issue with effeminate, diva gay guys that cause drama and are really annoying; frankly, I should have the right to tell them to take the gay down a couple notches, for crying out loud!
