ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Taser guns represent torture and should be taken off the streets, according to the League of United Latin American Citizens.
On Saturday, the civil rights organization called for the end of Taser guns in New Mexico and across the country, surprising at least one law enforcement organization, Action 7 News reporter Leigh Checkstad said.
Jim Burleson, the executive director of the New Mexico Sheriff’s and Police Association, said statistics indicate injuries for both law enforcement and assailants are dropping, but LULAC representatives said cases in New Mexico prove their case.
LULAC cited studies that they said indicate Hispanics and African-Americans are the most common groups of people shot by Taser guns.
In video provided by the Clovis News Journal, Kailee Martinez was seen running from the town’s police chief and, out of frame, he used a Taser gun on her. In a photo, staples were seen in her head, Chckstad reported.
